A Candidate for Congress Is Bringing the QAnon Conspiracy

Theory to a Baseball Stadium Near You

Jo Rae Perkins doesn’t have a good chance of winning in November. But she’s been successful in a different way.

By Tess Riski |Published 5:47 AM Updated 5:47 AM

On a Sunday evening in mid-September, the air outside Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore., tasted like charcoal.

The minor league baseball stadium sits along Interstate 5, just 30 miles from the Beachie Creek wildfire, which three days earlier had wiped out much of the town of Detroit, population 200. Smoke still hung heavy in the air. As 20 or so cars arrived at the outdoor stadium's parking lot, the Air Quality Index had climbed to 590—nearly double what the Environmental Protection Agency deems "hazardous."

Yet almost 50 Oregonians turned out—to hear from speakers who promised to reveal who started the fires and what secrets the smoke was hiding.

Adjacent to the stadium stands a warehouse with batting cage netting draped from the ceiling and artificial turf on the floor. Inside, guests with $20 tickets arrived from Baker City, Tillamook and Crook County.

One of the early speakers was Captain Roy Davis, an author and self-described "digital soldier" who lives on a boat in Florida and has authored two books: QAnon and the Great Awakening and White Hats, Swamp Creatures and QAnon: A Who's Who of Spygate. He whipped up the crowd with the current vocabulary of conspiracy.

"Everything that we're seeing right now," Davis told the crowd, "from impeachment, virus masks, riots, wildfires: It's all part of the cover-up to keep guilty people's crimes from coming to the public."

Officially, the gathering was billed as a fundraiser for a U.S. Senate candidate named Jo Rae Perkins. But it was also a highly unusual gathering for supporters of a growing conspiracy movement called QAnon, which the FBI has designated a domestic terrorist threat. The event page advertised three featured speakers—all major figures in the online forums where QAnon concocts intricate stories about how President Donald Trump is defeating child sex traffickers.

Oklahoma QAnon supporter abused girlfriend's baby girl

to death after posting 'Save Our Children' on Facebook

Oklahoma City law enforcement revealed that Joshua Paul Jennings is accused of killing 10-month-old Paisley Cearley

By Kunal Dey

Published on : 06:06 PST, Sep 30, 2020

EL RENO, OKLAHOMA: A QAnon supporter who allegedly tortured and murdered his girlfriend's baby daughter has been arrested, police say. Oklahoma City law enforcement revealed that Joshua Paul Jennings is accused of killing 10-month-old Paisley Cearley while she was in his care at an apartment. Jennings is now facing first-degree murder, torture, and maiming charges, per records from the Canadian County Sheriff's Office, The Sun reported.

Last month, the 33-year-old posted an alleged QAnon-linked slogan #SaveOurChildren on his Facebook page. The slogan originally belonged to the Save the Children charity, but has since been adopted by those who believe in the so-called underground movement. Supporters of the QAnon theory, which has gained popularity among President Donald Trump's base, believe that the president is working to defeat a "deep-state cabal of Satanist pedophiles in the American government" and is communicating to the masses with the help of a mysterious figure within the federal government.

“Y’all know I don’t get on here much and post anymore. One, because life has been crazy with work, moving, etc," Jennings wrote on his Facebook. "And two, because I don’t feel the need to live my life through social media. However…This #SaveOurChildren movement train I will GLADLY hop on. Blow it up on my page if you feel froggy.”

Oklahoma City Police responded to Mercy Minor Emergency Clinic on September 25 afternoon after being informed that a baby had been brought in with life-threatening injuries. “She was transported to an area hospital from the minor emergency clinic,” Oklahoma City Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. "Sadly, the following morning, she passed away as a result of her injuries.” According to investigators, the baby sustained the injuries at her residence in the 11300 block of SW 5, near Interstate 40 and Mustang Road in Yukon. “He (Jennings) was interviewed the day she was brought into the emergency clinic and subsequently booked into the Oklahoma County jail,” said Knight.

Jennings, who is the boyfriend of the baby's mother, was initially arrested on a complaint of child abuse. “Those complaints will now be amended to reflect murder in the first degree,” Knight explained. Jennings was later booked into Canadian County jail, where he continues to be remanded in custody. Meanwhile, officials are yet to release exact details of the child's injuries pending investigation.

Last month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced backlash for allegedly blocking QAnon-associated hashtags. Since August 5, Facebook users noticed that a hashtag with the phrase “Save the Children” (#SavetheChildren) was allegedly being censored on the social networking site. Although statuses with the hashtag could still be posted, clicking on the hashtag did not show any results as noticed by users. In some cases, as reported on the Heavy Website, “a warning about community safety guidelines” appeared instead.

While there was no official response to the allegations, some claimed it was because the hashtag came with some “disturbing photos and pages." It was speculated that the hashtag may have been auto-censored due to photos that were tagged with it and after being allegedly reported on such posts. Social media users, however, branded the censoring of the “Save the Children” hashtag as “unreal” and rebuked Zuckerberg and Facebook for the same. Some even accused the social media platform of “protecting child sex traffickers."

QAnon Is Going into Stealth Mode Ahead of the Election

Adherents to QAnon want to launder their baseless conspiracy

theories through conservative media and gain scale on

Facebook.

By David Gilbert

September 30, 2020, 9:57am

The pandemic has been a boon for QAnon.

For the last 10 months, as people have been trapped at home with time on their hands, millions of Americans have begun following the delusional conspiracy theory.

It has taken root with community Facebook groups, with soccer moms on Instagram, and among cops across the country.

The conspiracy theory has even burrowed its way into the Republican Party, with dozens of GOP candidates openly supporting the movement, and many others tacitly approving it by refusing to condemn it.

It’s even reached the White House, with President Donald Trump speaking approvingly of a conspiracy theory that says one day he will save the world from a cabal of satanic, child-eating pedophiles.

But now, as the presidential election approaches and social media companies belatedly try to close the door after the QAnon horse has bolted, the movement is moving into stealth mode and merging into the wider right-wing, conservative world.

“Drop all references re: 'Q' 'Qanon' to avoid ban/termination,” the eponymous Q said in one of a post on Sept. 17, ordering his digital soldiers to “deploy camouflage.”

And already that camouflage is being deployed.

Hours before the first presidential debate took place on Tuesday night, Q posted a screenshots of a conspiracy theory that had been spreading within mainstream conservative circles, that Democratic nominee Joe Biden would use a hidden earpiece to get answer fed to him by his campaign team.

Q even posted a link to a Fox News story about the unfounded claims, highlighting just how the movement is seeking to co-opt the established conservative world in order to increase its support base. Various versions of this story from right-wing media outlets were widely shared on Facebook, which helped disseminate them to an audience outside of those specifically seeking out Qanon talking points.

And Q’s followers are fully on board with this change in approach, seeing the benefits of this new tactic.

“If somebody comes to accept a truth or swallow a redpill without knowing it was associated with Q, then they do so unpolluted by media bias,” one follower said, adding: “Bypass prejudice. Makes sense.”

Even those who have found fame as high-profile members of the QAnon community embraced the directive of their mysterious master.

“Dead soldiers launch no memes,” Dave Hayes, a Christian author and QAnon star known online as the “Praying Medic” warned in a blog post last week, which outlined how he and others are changing up their online tactics by “omitting direct references to Q, on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.”

While Hayes and others continue to preach the Q gospel to hardcore believers on other platforms — such as Gab, Parler, and Clouthub — experts are worried that shedding the explicit Q branding will help the conspiracy theory gain even more traction among unwitting voters ahead of next month’s election.

“This is absolutely a concerted effort to smooth the rough edges and gain a larger following, and thus more legitimacy, in the mainstream public,” Alex Newhouse, digital research lead at the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute, told VICE News.

While it’s still unclear what impact this move could have on November’s election, we already know that a softer version of the conspiracy theory can be hugely effective.

China menace: Beijing sends ominous warning to Taiwan

with key policy shift

CHINA's emphatic rejection last week of the nominal maritime border which separates Taiwan from the mainland is a significant intervention which indicates Beijing's increasingly belligerent approach, a UK-based expert has warned.

Professor Steve Tsang also warned pro-democracy campaigners on the island they risked irritating the superpower still further with their ambitions for Taiwan to join the United Nations as an independent nation. The unofficial border - referred to as the median line - runs up the centre of the narrow Taiwan Strait.

However, military drills launched by China earlier this month saw at least 19 fighter jets cross into airspace which Taiwan regards as its own.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Webin subsequently insisted the median line did not exist, suggesting it was a concept created by the US military in the mid-20th century.

Professor Steve Tsang, the director of the China Institute at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), told Express.co.uk: "The comment on the median line is important, as it changes the ground rules both sides across the Taiwan Straits have worked on for decades.

However, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party - and therefore President Tsai Ing-wen - rejects this, regarding the island is an independent country known as the Republic of China.

A group of campaigners calling themselves the Taiwan United Nations Alliance on Monday unveiled plans for a petition aimed at forcing a referendum petition for a referendum to have the island join the UN under the name 'Taiwan'.

Alliance chairman Twu Shiing-jer was joined at a news conference in the capital of Taipei by DPP politician Huang Hsiu-fang.

Pompeo Calls On Pope Francis to Defend Religious Freedom

in China

Tensions between Washington and the Vatican over China policy dominate Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Rome

By Francis X. Rocca and Courtney McBride

Sept. 30, 2020 10:07 am ET

ROME—Secretary of State Mike Pompeo launched a strong attack on religious persecution in China and called on the Vatican to stand up for religious freedom there, in an implicit criticism of Pope Francis’s rapprochement with Beijing.

“Nowhere is religious freedom under assault more than in China,” Mr. Pompeo said in a speech in Rome. He cited China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims and other religious minorities, including Catholics, as well as the crackdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. “We must support those demanding freedom in our time.”

Mr. Pompeo, who was addressing a conference on religious freedom organized by the U.S. Embassy to the Vatican, invoked the courage of Pope John Paul II in opposing Soviet Communism.

“May the church, and all those who know that we are ultimately accountable to God, be so bold in our time,” Mr. Pompeo said. In an apparent reference to the Vatican’s diplomatic efforts toward Beijing, he added: “Earthly considerations shouldn’t discourage principled stances based on eternal truths.”

China has become the strongest source of tension between Washington and the Holy See since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, which Pope John Paul II opposed. The U.S. administration has been critical of the Vatican’s cooperation deal with China, signed in 2018, which Pope Francis is seeking to renew.

The agreement, the details of which aren’t public, gives both Beijing and the Vatican a say in appointing Catholic bishops in China. Critics say the deal has helped Beijing to bring the “underground” or unofficial Catholic church in China under greater government control. Chinese Catholics have for decades been split between underground and government-approved churches.

Taiwan trade deal on Trump administration's radar

lawmaker says

Reuters Washington Sep 30, 2020, 07.38 PM(IST)

A group of Republican lawmakers seeking to counter national security and economic threats from China is calling for the United States to open trade talks with Taiwan, a plan which is "very much" on the radar screen of the Trump administration, according to the congressman who leads the group.

Representative Michael McCaul, who chairs the China task force launched by House of Representatives Republicans earlier this year, said such negotiations would be "an important foreign policy statement to make," and help hold China accountable for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which has drawn fire from President Donald Trump.

"It is very much on their radar screen," McCaul told Reuters, when asked if the Trump administration and its top trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, would pursue a deal. "I don`t think that Lighthizer has 100% approved it, but…it is one of the options on the table for them and I think a recommendation coming from the task force would carry a lot of weight."

The proposal is one of 400 recommendations outlined in a report set to be released later on Wednesday by the task force.

The report will also recommend bolstering U.S. medical supply chains, sanctioning Chinese telecoms companies engaged in economic or industrial espionage, and evaluating whether the Beijing`s repression of its Uigher Muslim minority amounts to genocide.

Taiwan has long sought a free trade agreement with the United States, its most important supporter on the international stage, but Washington has complained about barriers to access for U.S. pork and beef.

Last month, Taiwan paved the way for an eventual deal by announcing an easing of restrictions on the import of U.S. beef and pork that is expected to go into effect on Jan. 1.

Taiwan-U.S. trade last year was worth $85.5 billion, with the United States running a $23.1 billion deficit. Taiwan was the United States` 14th biggest export market in 2019.

The United States, like most countries, has no official relations with Taiwan, which is claimed by Beijing as sovereign Chinese territory. China has been stepping up its military activities near the island.

Comey Defends Russia Inquiry in Senate Testimony

The former F.B.I. director has long been a target of President Trump’s.

By Nicholas Fandos and Michael S. Schmidt

Sept. 30, 2020

Updated 10:34 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON — The former F.B.I. director James B. Comey began testifying on Wednesday before a Republican-led Senate committee seeking to discredit the investigation he opened during the 2016 election into ties between Donald J. Trump’s campaign and Russia.

With another presidential election looming, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee were eager to portray President Trump as a victim of a politically motivated smear by the F.B.I. that unfairly cast a shadow over his presidency. And they will contend that Mr. Comey was the ringleader.

Mr. Comey began by strongly defending the F.B.I.’s handling of the investigation, including his decision to open it. But he was expected to acknowledge, as he has before, that his initial claims were wrong that a wiretap of a former Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page, was properly handled and concede that the bureau had been sloppy on that aspect of the broader inquiry.

He testified by video from his home.
