Goldman Cuts 400 Jobs As COVID-19 Layoff Moratorium Ends

Although they won't be counted in time to be reflected in the pre-election day jobs numbers, the last batch of which is set to be released on Friday, a flurry of corporate layoffs in recent days has offered the latest reminder that for millions of Americans, the "K" shaped recovery described by Chris Wallace last night is a reality for working people.

The layoff wave continued Wednesday morning with Shell and Continental announcing thousands of layoffs, and continued into the afternoon as Goldman Sachs announced that it, too, would soon move along with some layoffs that had purportedly been planned before COVID-19.

Shareholders might remember that Goldman CEO David Solomon has been doing a top-to-bottom review of the bank. Presumably, the roughly 400 positions (1% of its workforce) being eliminated are part of Solomon's vision to make the bank a more consumer-focused, tech savvy institution (basically, it's firing investment bankers and hiring more coders).

Bloomberg notes that the cuts come despite the fact that the bank's traditional dealmaking and trading businesses are "booming".

Goldman is hardly alone. In the US, Wells Fargo and Citigroup were among the first to restart their planned cuts. In Europe, Deutsche Bank is moving ahead with the biggest Wall Street cull since Lehman. Solomon acknowledged the cuts over the summer, saying he would resume the cuts "for the good of our shareholders".

The bank was already facing immense pressure to lower costs before the coronavirus was declared a global pandemic.

"At the outbreak of the pandemic, the firm announced that it would suspend any job reductions," said Pat Scanlan, a spokesman for New York-based Goldman Sachs. "The firm has made a decision to move forward with a modest number of layoffs."

Hopefully, the Goldman traders who got COVID-19 wont' see their positions included in the cull - though, right now, they're probably making too much money for the firm to risk cutting lose. Then again, it doesn't exactly take a genius to reap a major windfall trading options in this market.

Seven People Injured in Apparent Drive-By Shooting Outside US Funeral Home

Seven people were shot at the Serenity Funeral Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Wednesday in an apparent drive-by shooting.

The unidentified shooter is believed to have fired from a vehicle as a group of people were entering the funeral home. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, around 100 mourners were gathered for a funeral for Braxton Taylor, 26, when the shooting occurred. Taylor died in a September 17 homicide that has not yet been resolved by police.

Police are currently searching for the suspect.

The victims, aged between 24 and 48, have been hospitalized but are all in stable condition. The shooting took place during a funeral service.

Photos at the scene show the funeral home's shattered windows and a heavy police presence.

"This is an untenable situation. This brazen act done in broad daylight is just unacceptable in our city," Milwaukee Police Chief Michael Brunson said, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"Our prayers are with the victims and their family members during this terrible time," Brunson added.

Following the shooting, Milwaukee Mayor Ted Barrett criticized guns.

“It’s the insanity of people solving their problems with guns," Barrett said. "We’re seeing way too much of that this year," he added.

Fed Extends Limits On Buybacks, Dividends Until End Of 2020; Brainard Dissents

Two weeks after announcing it may extend the limit on dividends and buybacks for large banks - which was scheduled to expire today - by another quarter, after the close on Wednesday the Fed did just that saying that "due to the continued economic uncertainty from the coronavirus response", it will extend for an additional quarter several measures "to ensure that large banks maintain a high level of capital resilience." The news will disappoint bank execs such as Jamie Dimon whose JPMorgan had already indicated interest in resuming buybacks.

For the fourth quarter of this year, large banks—those with more than $100 billion in total assets—will be prohibited from making share repurchases. Additionally, dividend payments will be capped and tied to a formula based on recent income, the Fed announced.

To ease concerns that "it is seeing something others aren't" the Fed clarified that "the capital positions of large banks have remained strong during the third quarter while such restrictions were in place." Curiously, the Fed felt compelled to limit shareholder distributions in Q4 as well, almost as if it expects more turmoil to hit in the last three months of the year.

In June, the Fed released the results of its annual stress test and additional analysis, which found that all large banks were sufficiently capitalized. However, just in case they weren't, the Fed also restricted banks from increasing dividends above second-quarter levels, and buybacks were banned. Those restrictions were less than the total elimination of dividends demanded by some Democratic lawmakers.

As Bloomberg notes, Fed governor Lael Brianard, who has expressed an interest in becoming the next Fed chair under a Biden administration, dissented in the 4-1 vote to extend the existing limits, having previously argued that allowing capital distributions "creates a significant risk that banks will need to raise capital or curtail credit at a challenging time." It wasn't immediately clear if her dissent was because she wanted a return of the pre-covid status quo or because she preferred an indefinite extension of the bank capital limits.

Also, as announced in mid-September, the Fed confirmed it would conduct a second stress test to further test the resiliency of large banks, the result of which will likely be used to justify the removal of the buyback and dividend caps.

Classroom Indoctrination Season Is Here: NY Anti-Trump Professor Caught on Tape Is 'Reassigned' for 'Electioneering'

Suffolk County Community College has “reassigned” Janet Gulla, an anti-Trump humanities professor who was caught on tape electioneering against the president during the second day of classes. After a parent recorded the professor begging the students not to vote for Trump, the video went viral on social media.

On the recording, Gulla is heard saying, “If any of you do still think Trump is a good person, I beg you to not only go into your heart center and think about this a little more [but] pull up all the stuff that he’s been doing to our country, taking away so many of our rights. He’s trying to turn this into a dictator-like situation.”

A spokesperson for the college released a statement to WCBS 880:

Suffolk County Community College is aware of a video posted to Facebook allegedly containing 45 seconds of audio from a 1 hour and 15-minute online class. Pending an investigation of the content and context of that video, we have reassigned the faculty member involved in the video. Suffolk County Community College encourages any open and diverse discussion and exchange of ideas. The College does not, however, condone electioneering by faculty in the classroom.

Many parents have called for the professor to be fired. Teachers seem to think they have a right to try and persuade their students inside the classroom. Many parents disagree. This is a widespread problem from elementary schools, to high schools and colleges.

Recently, 9-year-olds were given assignments on Black Lives Matter propaganda in Wisconsin.

Why Biden Said ‘Inshallah’ During the Debate

One of the most revealing moments of last night’s debate was one that most people probably missed. BuzzFeed’s Hamed Aleaziz was overjoyed, tweeting that it was “a historic moment in America.” Over at Slate, Aymann Ismail added that “as terrible as this debate night was, at least a few of us had this moment.”

This glorious occasion came when Donald Trump stated that he would eventually release his tax returns: “I’ve paid millions of dollars, and you’ll get to see it.” Joe Biden responded: “When? Inshallah,” using Arabic for “God willing,” a phrase that is often used in the context of procrastination.

Some Muslims were excited about Biden’s colloquial use of the phrase, so as to mean “This is not likely to happen.” “Interfaith and anti-racism educator” Hind Makki tweeted: “Whenever someone who’s not Muslim drops an inshallah in conversation, I assume they have Muslim colleagues. When they know to use it colloquially [sarcastically], I know they have close Muslim friends.”

These were just the sort of reactions Biden was doubtless hoping for. Arabic-speaking Christians as well as Muslims say “Inshallah,” but in saying this, Biden was not pandering to Arabic-speaking Christians; he was pandering to the part of his base (Muslim and non-Muslim) that believes that counterterror efforts are largely just an exercise in “Islamophobia” and supports the likes of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. With the world watching, Biden was demonstrating his support for the Left’s favored religion, Islam. He wouldn’t have said the phrase in English, “God willing,” because his point was not primarily to emphasize that Trump was going to procrastinate in releasing his tax returns; it was to show in a concise, albeit indirect fashion that he was a worthy candidate of the anti-American hard left, a reliable foe of the alleged “Muslim ban,” and a fervent proponent of mass migration.

For Biden has to earn the love of the increasingly dominant hard-left wing of his party. Trump several times last night maneuvered Biden into repudiating pet causes of the far left, notably the Green New Deal, for which Biden affirms support on his own website. This is likely to cause him some difficulty with the most radical of his supporters, for they have already made clear that they’ve got the Democratic nominee on a short leash.

The notorious anti-Semite and former Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour made that clear in July when she declared “I choose Biden” and then immediately began making clear that her support was decidedly conditional: “But I choose him as my opponent in the White House. I want him to defeat Trump so we can mobilize our movements to hold him accountable and push him to do and be better. We can’t do that with Trump.”

The Global Semiconductor Market: China Deploys Sun Tzu to Prevail in the Chip War

Let’s cut to the chase: with or without a sanction juggernaut, China simply won’t be expelled from the global semiconductor market.

The real amount of chip supply Huawei has in stock for their smart phone business may remain an open question.

But the most important point is that in the next few years – remember Made in China 2025 remains in effect – the Chinese will be manufacturing the necessary equipment to produce 5 nm chips of equivalent or even better quality than what’s coming from Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.

Conversations with IT experts from Russia, ASEAN and Huawei reveal the basic contours of the road map ahead.

They explain that what could be described as a limitation of quantum physics is preventing a steady move from 5nm to 3nm chips. This means that the next breakthroughs may come from other semiconductor materials and techniques. So China, in this aspect, is practically at the same level of research as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.

Additionally, there is no knowledge gap – or a communication problem – between Chinese and Taiwanese engineers. And the predominant modus operandi remains the revolving door.

China’s breakthroughs involve a crucial switch from silicon to carbon. Chinese research is totally invested in it, and is nearly ready to transpose their lab work into industrial production.

In parallel, the Chinese are updating the US-privileged photo-lithography procedure to get nanometer chips to a new, non-photo lithography procedure capable of producing smaller and cheaper chips.

As much as Chinese companies, moving forward, will be buying every possible stage of chip manufacturing business in sight, whatever the cost, this will proceed in parallel to top US semiconductor firms like Qualcomm going no holds barred to skirt sanctions and continue to supply chips to Huawei. That’s already the case with Intel and AMD.

Huawei’s game

Huawei for its part is investing deeply in a very close R&D relationship with Russia, recruiting some of their best tech talent, notoriously strong in math, physics and rigorous design work. An example is Huawei’s purchasing of Russian face recognition company Vocord in 2019.

Some of the best tech brainpower in South Korea happens to be Russian.

Huawei has also established a “5G ecosystem innovation center”

in Thailand – the first of its type in ASEAN.

In the medium term, Huawei’s strategy for their top notch smart phones – which use 7nm chips – will be to hand over the business to other Chinese players such as Xiaomi, OPPO and VIVO, collect patent fees, and wait for the inevitable Chinese chip breakthrough while keeping production of 5G equipment, for which it has sufficient chips.

Huawei’s Harmony OS is considered by these IT experts to be a more efficient system than Android. And it runs on less demanding chips.

McConnell: 'It was unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday said it is “unacceptable” not to condemn white supremacists when asked about President Trump’s perceived side-stepping of the issue during his debate with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

McConnell, when asked whether it was a problem that Trump did not directly rebuke white supremacy, said he agreed with the remarks made by Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the only Black Republican in the Senate, calling on Trump to “correct” his statement.

“With regard to the white supremacy issue, I want to associate myself with the remarks of Sen. Tim Scott,” McConnell told reporters. “I think he said it exactly correctly and that’s exactly how I would express myself on that issue."

“He said it was unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists and so I do so in the strongest possible way,” the GOP leader added.

Trump called on one prominent white supremacist group, the Proud Boys, to “stand back and stand by” and then quickly added: “Somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left.”

Scott, appearing alongside Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett earlier, said Trump should correct what the senator thought was a misstatement.

"I think he misspoke in response to Chris Wallace's comment. … I think he misspoke, I think he should correct it. If he doesn't correct it, I guess he didn't misspeak," Scott said, when asked by a pool reporter if he was concerned by Trump's remarks.

Trump is waging asymmetric warfare – and it’s working

Biden came in for some rough treatment in the first presidential debate

“Teacher, help. The President is being mean to me.” That’s the rough translation of Joe Biden’s frequent, desperate appeals to moderator, Chris Wallace during last night’s debate with Donald Trump. The former Vice President came in for some rough treatment by the current leader of the free world.

From the starting shot, President Trump was on the front foot, peppering Biden with a flurry of verbal blows: taunts, accusations, barbed criticisms for Biden, declarations of sublime political skill, triumph against longs odds, and exemplary selflessness for himself. Biden didn’t know what hit him. But he should have. And so should have his advisers and debate coaches. This is Trump’s style.

Trump is a streetfighter waging asymmetric warfare against a traditional foe who is reviewing the rules of engagement and consulting the lawyers back at headquarters before doing anything. And all the while he’s getting pummelled. Idealists will say that it wasn’t very presidential, that they didn’t dig into policy and educate the American people, where was the dignity?

Welcome to electoral politics. It’s always been thus. Founding Father John Adams delighted in calling fellow Founder Alexander Hamilton, “the bastard brat of a Scotch peddler.” Adams himself came in for similar treatment during the election of 1800 when he was called an hermaphrodite reportedly at the behest of Thomas Jefferson.

We didn’t get any of that last night. But there’s another debate next week so keep your fingers crossed.

One of the most interesting and telling exchanges came about an hour into the debate. In some ways each man showed himself in his purest form. Joe Biden delivered what was very obviously a well-rehearsed, set-piece attack on President Trump. You could see the windup, like a boxer pulling his arm way back, fist clenched, preparing to deliver the knockout blow. Biden started by repeating the accusation that Trump disrespectfully criticises the military, calling them losers and suckers. The story has been debunked repeatedly by multiple sources including those hostile to the president like John Bolton. But it’s part of the Biden campaign’s strategy. So he levels the accusations and then begins to eulogise his son, Beau Biden, who served in Iraq, and later died of brain cancer. This makes it all personal to Joe, you see. He’s defending his dead son against a mythical slander from the bad orange man. Biden even points a finger at Trump, “My son is not a loser!”

L.O.L. Surprise Dolls’ Outfits in Ice Cold Water: Parents Outraged by What’s Revealed

Following the controversy surrounding the Hasbro-produced Trolls World Tour Poppy doll, the latest doll to find itself at the center of a viral controversy is the L.O.L. Surprise doll, made by MGA Entertainment. This time, the claim is that scandalous or strange outfits appear on some of the dolls after they are dipped in ice-cold water.

The L.O.L. Surprise dolls are designed to reveal another outfit, changes in color or symbols on the doll’s body when put into water. It is part of the “surprise” that is in the children’s toy’s name. The dolls, designed by the same company that created Bratz, have been controversial in the past for being over-sexualized, like their predecessor, according to The Atlantic.

The latest claim was first pointed out on Reddit a year ago, but it’s recently gone viral after a mother posted a video showing the result on Facebook. In the original post, a Redditor wrote, “My [3-year-old’s] ‘LOL Surprise doll’ she got for Christmas. When you dip her in cold water her ‘secret spy outfit’ shows up. Aka secret lingerie. And for whatever reason the nipples become extremely visible. The leopard print skimpy outfit she came with also makes her look like a hooker.” The user posted a photo of the doll showing the result she described.

The same claim resurfaced on Tuesday when Hilary Williams went live on Facebook to show a demonstration of her daughter’s L.O.L. Surprise dolls being dipped in cold water. Her video, which has since been viewed over 9 million times, is available below.

Update: A spokesperson for MGA Entertainment issued a statement to Fast Company: “L.O.L Surprise! is a fashion-forward doll brand designed to be fun and expressive. We work very hard to be a brand that listens and adapts to our fans’ requests. We acknowledge the recent feedback received and thank you for bringing it to our attention. We have implemented comprehensive corrective measures to our design and approval process while ensuring the essence of the brand is kept intact.”

The company did not specify what corrective measures they would be taking. Heavy reached out to MGA Entertainment for more information but did not immediately hear back.

The 7 Noahide Laws: Universal Morality

What Are the Seven Noahide Laws?

The 7 Noahide Laws are rules that all of us must keep, regardless of who we are or from where we come. Without these seven things, it would be impossible for humanity to live together in harmony.

Do not profane G‑d’s Oneness in any way.

Acknowledge that there is a single G‑d who cares about what we are doing and desires that we take care of His world.

Do not curse your Creator.

No matter how angry you may be, do not take it out verbally against your Creator.

Do not murder.

The value of human life cannot be measured. To destroy a single human life is to destroy the entire world—because, for that person, the world has ceased to exist. It follows that by sustaining a single human life, you are sustaining an entire universe.

Do not eat a limb of a living animal.

Respect the life of all G‑d’s creatures. As intelligent beings, we have a duty not to cause undue pain to other creatures.

Do not steal.

Whatever benefits you receive in this world, make sure that none of them are at the unfair expense of someone else.

Harness and channel the human libido.

Incest, adultery, rape and homosexual relations are forbidden.

The family unit is the foundation of human society. Sexuality is the fountain of life and so nothing is more holy than the sexual act. So, too, when abused, nothing can be more debasing and destructive to the human being.

Establish courts of law and ensure justice in our world.

With every small act of justice, we are restoring harmony to our world, synchronizing it with a supernal order. That is why we must keep the laws established by our government for the country’s stability and harmony.

These laws were communicated by G‑d to Adam and Noah, ancestors of all human beings. That is what makes these rules universal, for all times, places and people:

Laws made by humans may change according to circumstance. But laws made by the Creator of all souls over all of time remain the same for all people at all times..

If we would fulfill these laws just because they make sense to us, then we would change them, according to our convenience. We would be our own god. But when we understand that they are the laws of a supreme G‑d, we understand that they can not be changed, just as He does not change.

==What are the Punishments for Transgressing the 7 Noahide Laws?

From Melachim uMilchamot – Chapter 9:14:

A gentile who transgresses these seven commands shall be executed by decapitation. For this reason, all the inhabitants of Shechem were obligated to die. Shechem kidnapped. They observed and were aware of his deeds, but did not judge him.

A gentile is executed on the basis of the testimony of one witness and the verdict of a single judge. No warning is required. Relatives may serve as witnesses. However, a woman may not serve as a witness or a judge for them.

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/1188354/jewish/Melachim-uMilchamot-Chapter-9.htm

From Melachim uMilchamot – Chapter 9:2:

A gentile who worships false gods is liable provided he worships them in an accepted manner.

A gentile is executed for every type of foreign worship which a Jewish court would consider worthy of capital punishment. However, a gentile is not executed for a type of foreign worship which a Jewish court would not deem worthy of capital punishment. Nevertheless, even though a gentile will not be executed for these forms of worship, he is forbidden to engage in all of them.

From Wikipedia:

The Talmud lists the punishment for blaspheming the Ineffable Name of God as death. The sons of Noah are to be executed by decapitation for most crimes, considered one of the lightest capital punishments, by stoning if he has intercourse with a Jewish betrothed woman, or by strangulation if the Jewish woman has completed the marriage ceremonies, but had not yet consummated the marriage.

From the Talmud:

רב הונא ורב יהודה וכולהו תלמידי דרב אמרי על שבע מצות בן נח נהרג גלי רחמנא בחדא והוא הדין לכולהו

Rav Huna, Rav Yehuda, and all of the other students of Rav say: A descendant of Noah is executed for transgressing any of the seven Noahide mitzvot; the Merciful One revealed this punishment with regard to one mitzva, the prohibition of bloodshed, and the same is true with regard to all of them.

Punishment

https://www.sefaria.org/Sanhedrin.57a.13?lang=bi

From Noahide.org:

Prospectives on Noahide Laws Chapter 5:

The Noahide laws are generally held to be so evident and normal that one cannot plead ignorance or lack of warning to be exempt from liability for their non-observance[40]. The theoretical punishment of the Torah for transgression of the Noahide laws is death, although such a penalty could only be enforced at a time when the great Sanhedrin, the Jewish High Court, convened in its place on the Temple Mount[41], and it seems that even when that was the case, this penalty was almost never carried out. The significance of the theoretical death penalty in general, whether for Jew or non-Jew, is given in the words of Rashi, namely that “one has transgressed the will of one’s Creator”[42]. In the case of the Noahide laws, it is that the very purpose for which a human was created, namely to settle the world peacefully has been contradicted and, and so also the essential point of the human being’s existence has been vitiated[43].

Sexualized toys created for children: A disturbing trend, not a coincidence

Earlier this month, a justifiably upset mother called out Hasbro over the placement of a sensor on its Trolls “Giggle and Sing” Poppy doll.

The now-viral video notes that the packaging advertises a button on the doll’s stomach, that when pressed, will cause the doll to play a handful of phrases or sounds. Not mentioned on the packaging is a second button or sensor in the female doll’s genital area that, when pressed, causes the doll to gasp and make sounds like “Whee!” and “Oh!”

Hasbro has since pulled the doll from store shelves, but the placement of the button is disturbingly similar to grooming tactics used by child predators to normalize and desensitize kids to inappropriate touching.

More recently, a series of viral videos have called attention to a popular line of dolls called “L.O.L. (Outrageous Littles) Surprise!” that when dipped in cold water, reveal patterns on some dolls’ “skin” that resemble sexy lingerie or underwear.

The dolls’ manufacturer, MGA Entertainment, has issued a statement saying, “L.O.L. Surprise! Is a fashion-forward doll brand designed to be fun and expressive.” They further acknowledged the feedback and say they have implemented “comprehensive corrective measures to our design and approval process while ensuring the essence of the brand is kept intact.” Though it is worth noting that MGA Entertainment also produced the highly sexualized “Bratz” dolls in the early 2000s, so they are clearly committed to a specific brand identity.

If any one of these were isolated incidents, it would be easy enough to write them off as simple mistakes, lapses in judgment, or just a mind-boggling lack of awareness — or to simply assume that there were no malign intentions. But taken together, they suggest a growing pattern of sexualizing and exploiting children for entertainment. It is a cancer in the entertainment industry that is metastasizing.

Born to a Jewish family in Iran,[1][2][3] Larian has three sisters and one brother.[citation needed] Larian arrived to the United States alone in 1971 at the age of 17.[1] After graduating from California State University, Los Angeles in civil engineering,[1][2] he started an import-export business[2] with his brother Fred in 1979 after his plans to return to Iran were ended by the 1979 Iranian Revolution.[2] They then re-positioned the business into consumer electronics.[2] In 1987, they became a distributor for Nintendo and in 1993, they became a licensee for the "Power Rangers."[1] In 1997, toys became their focus and they had their first internal success with the Singing Bouncy Baby.[2] In 1998, he changed his company’s name to MGA Entertainment.[7] In 2000, his brother sold his 45% stake in the company to Larian for $9 million[2] and in 2001, MGA developed the "Bratz" doll.[1] In 2005, Bratz sales totaled $800 million well ahead of their main rival, Barbie with $445 million in sales.[2] In 2004, Mattel sued MGA alleging that the designer of the Bratz doll had developed the concept while working for Mattel and that MGA had paid Mattel employees to work on MGA projects. MGA counter sued alleging that Mattel spied on its salesmen by masquerading as toy buyers, re-positioned Bratz displays in retail stores to less favorable arrangements, and that Mattel paid retailers to favor Barbie over Bratz.[2]
