Ukraine Probes Likely Murder Of US Embassy Staffer In Kiev Park

Ukrainian authorities are investigating the shocking and mysterious death of a US Embassy employee on Wednesday.

So far all that is known is that a woman was found lying unconscious near railroad tracks in a park near the city center, apparently the victim of a brutal attack, given she had a head injury, according to Reuters.

She succumbed to her wounds at a nearby hospital, after which investigators found her ID, indicating she was employed by the US embassy in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. The US Embassy-Kyiv subsequently confirmed an American member of its staff has died under unknown circumstances.

A criminal investigation is underway, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Artem Shevchenko, who issued a statement in English saying it “may be a crime”. He followed with: “But may be an accident too. Body was found on railway in earphones during the jogging.”

“The unconscious woman was admitted to a hospital where she subsequently died. During the examination of the victim’s belongings, an identity card of an employee of the U.S. Embassy in her name was found,” Ukrainian police said.

Police say the investigation is focused on suspected murder and that they are seeking a suspect based on possible eyewitness accounts, described as follows:

Police are looking for a dark-haired man of 30-40, dressed in dark shorts and a T-shirt.

Within hours after the news breaking, the US Embassy-Kyiv issued confirmation.

Trump Directs Administration to Probe US Reliance on Foreign States for Critical Minerals

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order declaring a national emergency to deal with the United States' reliance on foreign countries for critical materials important to the US military and economy.

The executive order states that the US cannot be dependent on imports from "foreign adversaries" for the critical resources, which are crucial to maintaining its "economic and military strength in the 21st century".

"I hereby report that I have issued an Executive Order declaring a national emergency to deal with the threat posed by our Nation's undue reliance on critical minerals, in processed or unprocessed form, from foreign adversaries", Trump said in a letter to Congress on Wednesday.

In the order, Trump said 80 percent of US rare earth elements come directly from China and the remainder is indirectly sourced from China through other countries. In the 1980s, the president added, the United States produced "more of these elements than any other country in the world."

Trump said in the executive order that he has directed his administration to investigate this issue and in the next 60 days suggest any executive action that may be needed against China or other foreign countries, such as tariffs or import restrictions.

The order also requires the administration to produce a report every 180 days starting 1 January 2021, with a threat assessment of the United States' reliance on foreign materials. In addition, the order also seeks to develop secure supply chains in the United States of critical materials.

Hydroxychloroquine didn't prevent COVID-19 among healthcare workers in new study

The malaria drug hydroxychloroquine — which President Trump said he took in the hope of warding off COVID-19 — was found not to prevent infections among volunteers in a study released on Wednesday.

The study, which was ended early, included 125 healthcare workers, some of whom took hydroxychloroquine daily for eight weeks, while the others took a placebo

"There was no significant difference in infection rates in participants randomised to receive hydroxychloroquine compared with placebo," the researchers wrote in the study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Based on their findings, the researchers from the University of Pennsylvania wrote they "cannot recommend the routine use of hydroxychloroquine" among healthcare workers to prevent COVID-19.

It found that four of the 64 healthcare workers who were randomly given hydroxychloroquine ended up testing positive for COVID-19 — and four of the 61 healthcare workers who were given a placebo tested positive.

Among those eight participants who tested positive, six developed symptoms, none required hospitalisation and all clinically recovered from the illness, according to the study.

Overall, the findings in the new research are similar to what was reported in another study in the New England Journal of Medicine back in June.

The previous study found hydroxychloroquine did not prevent illness when used within four days of being exposed to the coronavirus.

Private security guards have been pulled from a Melbourne quarantine hotel and replaced by police after a health worker raised fears about infection control breaches.

Guards employed by services company Spotless were sent home from the Novotel in Southbank half way through their shift on Wednesday.

The state government took action after an anonymous health worker at the hotel tipped off a local newspaper with claims that infection control protocols were not being followed.

It comes just four months after the state's deadly second wave of coronavirus - which has killed more than 750 people - started with outbreaks at two hotels.

Victoria reported two more deaths and 15 infections overnight.

'I can see it happening all over again,' the health worker told The Age.

'When international flights start again we [Victoria] will be screwed.'

The worker claimed some Spotless staff accidentally entered rooms containing infected patients, made mistakes putting on and taking off protective gear and complained they were not trained well enough.

'I'm concerned about the practice of training brand new staff in a positive environment,' she told the newspaper, calling it 'very tight and unsafe'.

'They stuff up because they've never done a dry run of removing their PPE safely.

'It's so frustrating. I'm always telling new staff to keep their distance or clean their work stations.'

Melbourne is not accepting international travellers but hotel quarantine is still being used to isolate coronavirus patients who cannot isolate at home.

The program was overhauled in July after the virus escaped from two quarantine hotels in May and June and spread rapidly around the city.

The deadly second wave sent Melbourne into Stage Four lockdown, with even regional Victoria suffering tight Stage Three restrictions.

Facebook bans all US ads criticizing voting fraud, election results or methods after angry letter from Biden campaign

All ads in the US that “call voting fraud widespread, or election results invalid, or impugn any one method of voting” have been banned on Facebook and Instagram effective immediately, the social media company has announced.

The prohibitions apply to advertising regarding the US 2020 census and the November 3 elections, and specifically include ads that “that delegitimize any lawful method or process of voting or voting tabulation (including in-person voting on paper or on machines, absentee voting, vote by mail, and lawful collection of ballots) as illegal, inherently fraudulent or corrupt, or will result in a fraudulent or corrupt election administration or outcome.”

Ads that claim voter fraud is “widespread,” alters the outcome or results in a fraudulent or corrupt election will likewise be banned, alongside any “premature claims of election victory.”

Earlier this month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the platform would attach “informational labels” to posts that question the legitimacy of the US elections or voting methods, and declarations of victory before the final results are in.

On Monday, however, the campaign of Democrat nominee Joe Biden sent Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg an angry letter, accusing the platform of being “the nation’s foremost propagator of disinformation about the voting process.”

“Facebook’s continued promise of future action is serving as nothing more than an excuse for inaction,” campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote, claiming that President Donald Trump has been using the platform to “spread false information” about mail-in voting and suppress the vote, according to the letter obtained by Axios.

Democrats have pushed for universal mail-in voting, citing the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Lawyers for the DNC have filed dozens of lawsuits across US states, seeking to extend the deadlines for early in-person voting as well as counting ballots postmarked by election day, and loosen the requirements for recognizing mail-in ballots as valid. Trump has criticized these changes to standard electoral practice as opening up opportunities for potential fraud.
