You're making an interesting point re receptors but keep in mind that a number of harmful substances and even biological entities like viruses are using receptors to enter cells. These receptors were not specifically built for opiates or coronavirus for example, but are highjacked by opiates and coronavirus (opiates bind endorphin receptors which we need for pain control, pleasure etc without incurring harm) and coronaviruses bind ACE2 receptors (which are intended for vascular contractility, blood pressure control etc).
