""Protesters Slam Boston Mayor For Flying a Chinese Flag at City Hall""
Protesters criticized Boston Mayor Martin Walsh on Wednesday for flying the Chinese flag in front of City Hall, saying the city shouldn’t be honoring a country with as many civil rights issues as China has.
“That flag represents nothing good — censorship, imprisonment,” Thupten Tsering, a member of a local Tibetan organization, said. “How can you fly that flag here?”
Protesters from Tibetan, Uyghur and Hong Kong groups held signs with messages like “CCP does not equal China,” referring to the ruling Chinese Communist Party. “Mayor Walsh, stand up for human rights,” they chanted.
The city — which flies all sorts of different flags next to the American and city flags at different times — annually hoists the Chinese red-and-yellow flag at this time every year. That’s to honor the state of the People’s Republic of China, the current version of the country.
“I have no comment on that right now,” Walsh said when asked about the protesters. He further declined to talk about it as he left a late morning press conference.
China of late has begun exerting control over Hong Kong, which has had significant autonomy. That move has spawned massive protests in the huge island city, and on Tuesday one protester flew a black Hong Kong flag, a liberation symbol there.
China has long been criticized for keeping control of the Tibet region and, over the past few years, the government’s treatment of the Uyghur people, a Muslim ethnic group that the government is reportedly rounding up and detaining in re-education camps.
