U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Fall to 837,000, A Bit Below Expectations

The number of first-time filers for unemployment benefits fell last week by 36,000 to 837,000.

Claims have come in between 800,000 and 900,000 for the five consecutive weeks, a sign that progress in the labor market has stalled somewhat amid closed schools, delayed reopenings, and the reimposition of restrictions in some parts of the economy. The latest figure shows that there has been at least a bit of progress in September.

Economists had expected between 850,000 so Thursday’s number counts as better than expected.

The previous week had been initially reported as 870,000. It was revised up by 3,000.

Claims hit a record 6.87 million for the week of March 27. Until a month ago, each subsequent week had seen claims decline. But in late July, the labor market appeared to stall and claims hovered around one million throughout August, a level so high it was never recorded before the pandemic struck.

Now it appears they have once again stalled, although the latest data does show a bit more progress than expected. Jobless claims have hovered just between 900,000 and 800,000 since the last week in August.

The 4-week moving average, which may be a more reliable measure of the health of the jobs market because it smoothes out week-to-week volatility, was 867,250, which is 11,750 the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 750 from 878,250 to 879,000.

Continuing claims, which get reported with a week’s lag, came in at 11,767,000, a decrease of 980,000 from the previous week’s revised level. That’s the first reading below 12 million for this metric since the pandemic pushed unemployment claims sky high.

The previous week’s level was revised up 167,000 from 12,580,000 to 12,747,000. The 4-week moving average was 12,701,250, a decrease of 381,250 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 41,750 from 13,040,750 to 13,082,500.

The decline in continuing claims may be a silver lining in the report. It indicates that those who have lost their jobs are finding new work. It’s likely that the decline in the level of federal enhancement to unemployment benefits, from $600 per week to $300, has encouraged some workers to seek jobs.

The largest number of ongoing claims are in Hawaii, California, Nevada, and New York.

Jobless claims are a proxy for layoffs and have been closely watched as a signal for how the pandemic is influencing the economy. Prior to the pandemic, weekly jobless claims had been running around 200,000.

The government will release its monthly report on the unemployment situation on Friday. Economists expected the U.S. economy will have added around 840,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate to inch down from 8.4 percent to 8.2 percent.

Vatican Chief Denounces Intolerance of the ‘Politically Correct’

This is such a strange statement, and the Vatican sucks! Did you ever notice how many times the Vatican uses insidious, it’s insidious

ROME — The Vatican’s Secretary of State decried the intolerance of “political correctness” Wednesday as an insidious attack on religious freedom present in many Western democracies.

“Attacks on religious freedom are often driven by fear and ideology,” stated Cardinal Pietro Parolin at a Rome conference on religious liberty organized by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See and attended by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

One example of this would be “totalitarian regimes that use power to impose draconian restrictions, as witnessed, for example, in countries where the practice of certain religious traditions is prohibited and ‘minorities’ are actively persecuted,” Cardinal Parolin declared.

Yet another, more subtle form of persecution comes from “the intolerant voices of the politically correct that silence and condemn those religious beliefs, traditions and practices that clash with their progressive ideology, labeling them as ‘hateful’ and ‘intolerant,’” the cardinal said.

“It is time that we reflect more seriously about the root of ‘intolerance’ in such situations and, in particular, the shrinking public space for dialogue for and with those that practice their beliefs openly,” Parolin continued.

“Indeed, the degree of respect for freedom of religion in the public sphere is a clear indicator of the health of any society,” he added, “and, it follows, therefore, that it is also a ‘litmus test’ for the level of respect that exists for all other fundamental human rights as well.”

In his address, Cardinal Parolin said that the protection and promotion of the freedom of religion is “a hallmark of the diplomatic activity of the Holy See.”

He also stated that, according to Catholic teaching, this “fundamental human right, together with the inviolable right to life, forms the indispensable and solid foundation for numerous other human rights.”

The Catholic Church singles out the right to life and the right of religious freedom as two distinctly important rights, since they form the basis for all other rights.

As Pope John Paul II wrote, religious freedom is “a cornerstone of the structure of human rights, and for this reason an irreplaceable factor in the good of individuals and of the whole of society, as well as of the personal fulfilment of each individual,” noting elsewhere that the right to religious freedom “is increasingly perceived as the foundation of the cumulative rights of the person.”

In a similar way, John Paul wrote that the right to life is “the first of the fundamental rights,” observing that it is “impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop.”

In his words Wednesday, Cardinal Parolin also spoke of the link between religious freedom and freedom of conscience, saying that “sadly, we are witnessing a growing number of examples where this freedom is being violated, even forcefully so by civil legislation, which effectively amounts to an attack on the dignity of the human person.”

Modern threats to religious liberty include “physical oppression, persecution and ideological imposition,” the cardinal stated, but also “the denying of man’s very nature.”

Report: Moderators at Future Debates May Be Allowed to Cut Off Mics

Allum Bokhari30 Sep 2020

and guess who they will do it too, these people are so sick and desperate, it’s pathetic

The Commission on Presidential Debates may allow moderators for the next two debates to cut off the microphones of President Trump or Joe Biden if they break the rules, according to sources who spoke to CBS News.

This followed the first of the Presidential debates, hosted by Fox News’s Chris Wallace. The second debate will be hosted by Steve Scully of C-SPAN, and the third debate will be hosted by Kristen Welker of NBC News.

According to CBS, the Commission on Presidential debates is considering a raft of changes to the debates, including the ability to cut off mics.

Via CBS:

The commission that oversees the general election presidential debates said Wednesday it will be making changes to the format of the remaining two debates. One key change it plans to implement: Cutting off the microphones of President Trump and Joe Biden if they break the rules, according to a source familiar with the commission’s deliberations. The plans have not been finalized and the commission is still considering how it would carry out the plan.

In a statement following the presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio, the first of three scheduled in the run-up to the general election, the commission said the event “made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues.”

An informed source told CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell the commission will spend the next 48 hours determining new guidelines and rules for the second debate. The organization is working on all possible solutions, but the source said that “we are going to be making changes.”
