Data on Southwest Airlines engines on the 737-700…get in here….

"We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain CFM International S.A. (CFM) CFM56-3, -3B, and -3C turbofan engines. This AD was prompted by a report of dual-engine loss of thrust control (LOTC) that resulted in an air turn back. This AD requires initial and repetitive checks of the variable stator vane (VSV) actuation system in the high-pressure compressor (HPC). We are issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products."

"Forging group Firth Rixson Ltd. has secured a long-term supply contract estimated more than $200 million with Snecma, a French manufacturer of military and civil aircraft engines and part of the high-technology Safran Group, for closed-die forgings and seamless rings as part of its LEAP engine manufacturing program. https:// www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/new-test-needed-for-cfm56-7b-12497/

"CFM INTERNATIONAL (CFMI) plans to test a revised fan-blade retainer design on the CFM56-7B engine, following the failure of the original system during a crucial blade-off test which resulted in several blades detaching.

Despite the need for a new test, CFMI is confident that the engine will meet its scheduled certification target of 31 October. The engine is the first version of the CFM56 to have wide-chord fan blades and is destined for the new-generation Boeing 737 family."

LEAP…engine fan containment system..ceramic!

"The LEAP jet engine is the next generation of the successful CFM56 engine for narrow-body aircraft which powers more than half of the commercial aircraft ordered in the past decade. Produced by CFM International (Evry, France and Cincinnati, Ohio) — a 50/50 joint venture of Snecma and GE, formed in 1974. Snecma/Safran (Paris, France) is responsible for the low-pressure fan sections and GE Aviation handles the high-pressure combustion core. LEAP reportedly will offer a 15 percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the lowest operating cost (thanks to less maintenance and longer intervals between service) and an aircraft departure reliability of 99.98 percent."

Sorry for the dig slide..suspecting fuckery with jet engines as we have had several mil aircraft issues and now the SouthWest issue…

Summary of dig..

-an Airworthiness Directive has been issued for that engine type-planefags can comment on what this means…

-the engine is a CFM56 and would guess latest and greatest since on the 700

-engine is LEAP technology and the company is in the dig

-would suspect failure occured on the steel (ceramic??) containment ring which is a "shield" to prevent the very thing that happened

-Safran (engine maker) probably worth a deeper dig..French co, etc..
