Pompeo tests negative for coronavirus, wishes Trump and first

lady a 'speedy recovery'

Secretary of State has been traveling and has not interacted with Trump since Sept. 15

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo early Friday morning said he has tested negative for coronavirus hours after President Trump announced he and the first lady have the virus.

Pompeo has been traveling in recent weeks and has not interacted with the president since the Sept. 15 signing of the Abraham Accords.

"I'm feeling fantastic," Pompeo told reporters when asked how he felt. "We are praying for the president and First Lady that they'll have a speedy recovery."

First lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus early Friday after top White House aide Hope Hicks tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Hicks had been traveling with the president this week to the presidential debate and on the campaign trail.

Pompeo said that Friday morning he had been tested for the coronavirus four times since Sept. 16.

Trump at 74-years-old is in one of the highest-risk categories for the coronavirus, and his diagnosis represents one of the most serious health problems for a sitting president in years. But the vast majority of people who are diagnosed with the coronavirus survive, and Trump is said to be asymptomatic as of Friday morning. And other world leaders have tested positive for the virus and continued to lead their countries, most notably British Prime Minister Boris Johnson who spent some time in the hospital but was later discharged.

Messages for sick Trump split between "get well" and "told you so"

By Reuters Staff

OCTOBER 2, 2020 5:39 AM UPDATED 6 MINUTES AGO

(Reuters) - Get well messages for U.S. President Donald Trump poured in from foreign capitals on Friday after he and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus, but some had little sympathy for a leader whose response to the pandemic has been widely criticised.

Trump, who might be voted out of office on Nov. 3, denies accusations that he downplayed the severity of the outbreak as the world’s most powerful nation also became the worst hit, accounting for around 20% of a global death toll that crossed a million this week.

Most diplomatic responses to news that Trump, 74, and his wife Melania had tested positive for COVID-19 observed the niceties, while governments everywhere assessed how it might impact the outcome of next month’s U.S. election.

“COVID-19 is a battle we all continue to fight. Everyday. No matter where we live,” European Council President Charles Michel said in a tweet, wishing America’s First Couple a speedy recovery.

But disappointed by Washington’s leadership during the global health crisis, some messages were laced with stinging barbs.

“This demonstrates that the virus spares no one, including those who have shown scepticism. I wish him a swift recovery,” said Gabriel Attal, spokesman for the French government.

If one of the United States most important NATO allies sounded somewhat terse, there was no hiding the bitter satisfaction evident in China’s state-controlled media following news that their country’s chief antagonist had joined the COVID sick list.

“President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19,” tweeted Hu Xijin, editor in chief of China’s Global Times newspaper.

“The news shows the severity of the US’s pandemic situation. It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his reelection.”

White House pressures Republicans to go after social media

companies before election

by Nihal Krishan, Economic Policy Reporter

October 02, 2020 06:40 AM

The White House is pressuring Senate Republicans, just weeks before the election, to investigate social media companies that it says are censoring conservative voices, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Trump administration has pushed members of key Senate committees to hold hearings related to tech censorship and asked certain senators to introduce relevant legislation, according to two Republican Senate staffers.

The White House strategy appears to be working. Multiple bills related to tech censorship have been introduced in the Senate in the past few weeks, and the CEOs of three leading social media companies were subpoenaed on Thursday to testify in front of a relevant Senate committee.

“The White House has been in touch with multiple members in the past few weeks about their views on censorship and what they would like to see happen,” a Republican Senate staffer said.

“It goes hand in hand with their executive action and Trump’s tweets,” the staffer said.

The recent Senate actions have come months after President Trump signed an executive order to combat what he views as unfair censorship of conservative voices.

The tech industry is currently protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which provides that websites generally are not legally responsible for content posted by their users, including for defamation, breach of contract, and emotional distress. The provision protects video-hosting sites, such as YouTube, and social media providers, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as any website that allows users to post comments.

The law has gotten increased attention recently from members of Congress and the public. In fact, a majority of people in the United States, on both sides of the aisle, say that social media companies are censoring political expression, according to an August poll by the Pew Research Center.

The Senate Commerce Committee, led by Republican Chairman Roger Wicker from Mississippi, voted on a bipartisan basis Thursday to subpoena the CEOs of Facebook, Google, and Twitter to testify about the tech industry's controversial legal shield, Section 230. The subpoenas are occurring now because Wicker has asked the tech CEOs to appear in other contexts, and they've declined each time, a Republican committee aide told the Washington Examiner.

On Wicker’s direction, the Commerce Committee staff has compiled a research report of instances where conservative content was taken down by social media companies, the committee aide said.

The report documents multiple instances of conservative censorship by social media companies during the month of September and various such occurrences during the summer as well.

“There has been a methodical and systematic censoring of particular views, conservative views,” the committee aide said. The aide added that they had not seen any significant censorship of liberal content.

“Given the visibility and urgency of this censorship issue so close to election, where it’s important to have all voices expressed, it’s important for senators and the American people to know how these companies have engaged in content moderation,” the aide said.

There is, however, significant pushback to the allegations of anti-conservative bias by Democrats and liberal scholars. The platforms themselves have repeatedly denied that they have an anti-conservative bias or that they censor conservative content.

“The subpoenas and some of these bills are borderline harassment,” said Tim Wu, an expert on tech law and a professor at Columbia University.

“There is some legitimate investigation needed of Section 230, but a lot of conservatives are also trying to use it as a weapon to try to discipline the referee and get social media companies to fall into line," said Wu.

Senate Republicans have been gathering momentum in the past few weeks in the fight against social media companies.
