Dr. Richard H. Medley 1951-2011
Dr. Richard H. Medley, passed away after a brief illness at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan on Wednesday, November 16, at the age of 60. Richard was born to Richard and Alice Medley in Rochester, N.Y. on October 3, 1951. Having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970-1973 and achieving the rank of Airman First Class, he received his B.A. in political science at Ohio State University and subsequently earned his Ph.D., M. Phil, and M.A. degrees from Yale University, where he also taught political philosophy. Richard had recently founded and served as CEO of RHM Global, a geopolitical and economic intelligence firm dedicated to providing hedge funds and high-net-worth clients with advance news alerts before these potential media headlines could impact the financial markets. Previously, Richard was a partner, managing director and chief political advisor at Soros Fund Management, where he first initiated and developed his concept of a global intelligence network. In 1995, he founded Medley Global Advisors, which soon became the dominant political and geopolitical intelligence firm in the hedge fund and proprietary trading community. That firm was sold in 2005 to a group of private investors. Prior to his tenure with Soros Fund Management, Richard had served as Chief Economist for the House Banking Committee and Chief of Staff for the Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate under Robert Byrd. He left Senator Byrd's staff to become head speechwriter for Geraldine Ferraro's Vice Presidential campaign during the 1984 election. Richard served on the boards of Yale University, Claremont Graduate University and Sacred Heart in New York City. He was also a life member of the Council of Foreign Relations. An avid sailor, Richard was often referred to as "the wonderful compass" for the guidance and direction he always provided to family and friends. In keeping with nautical terminology, he also nicknamed his second wife Dorinda, "my true north." Richard is survived by wife Dorinda C. Medley, children Paige and Aidan Medley, stepdaughter Hannah Lynch, and brother Robert Medley. He was loved like a son by his in-laws, John and Diane Cinkala. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held Monday, November 21 at 11 a.m. at the Brick Church, located at 1140 Park Avenue (between East 91st and East 92nd Street).
