Prominent attorney and his niece killed in small plane crash in Pembroke
(WHAM) - A small plane crashed Friday afternoon in Pembroke, Genesee County, killing a man and woman on board.
The Barnes Firm, a group of attorneys, identified the victims at Steve Barnes and his niece Elizabeth Barnes in a statement.
It read: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we acknowledge the loss of Steve Barnes and his niece Elizabeth Barnes following a tragic accident earlier today. Steve was a friend, colleague, partner, and mentor to so many people across our firm, in New York, California, and beyond. He was a legal industry giant, proud Marine, and loving father. Steve and Elizabeth will be sorely missed by many. Our utmost condolences go out to his family and closest loved ones during this very difficult and unfortunate time."
Barnes was half of the prominent legal duo Cellino & Barnes. Ross Cellino called Barnes' passing "a significant loss for the legal community."
The plane was flying back to Buffalo from Manchester, N.H. according to Genesee County Sheriff Bill Sheron. The FAA registration for the plane is registered to an address in Buffalo. The address is listed as the headquarters for the Cellino & Barnes law firm.
The plan crashed just west of Boyce Road.
The NTSB is investigating the crash, which it says involves a Socata TBM 700 aircraft, a single-engine propeller plane.
Witnesses report hearing a “winding” sound before the crash, then seeing a fireball.
All that is left of the plane is a 3-foot by 2-foot piece of debris. Deputies said the rest of the plane disintegrated on impact.
