Businessman Thibault recovering from stroke

October 1, 2009

LOWELL — John Thibault, a Chelmsford resident well known in local business and political circles, is recovering from a stroke he suffered while vacationing in Paris on Sunday.

Thibault, 53, executive director of the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, is being treated in a hospital in France and is expected to return to the United States this weekend.

It is unclear how severe Thibault’s condition is. He was with his wife, Elaine.

Dennis Ready, a local real-estate agent and close friend of Thibault, said Thibault was placed in an induced coma.

“From what I understand, on Sunday morning he said he had a headache while he and his wife were having a cup of coffee,” Ready said. “He was rushed to a hospital.”

John Chemaly, owner of Trinity Ambulance and a friend of Thibault, said there is an air ambulance on standby to take Thibault back to the United States. Chemaly spoke with Thibault’s wife yesterday, who said her husband’s condition was improving.

The couple had been planning to take red-eye flight Tuesday night, and Thibault was scheduled to return to work yesterday, Chemaly said.

Thibault was an executive with Wang Laboratories and Motorola in the 1980s and early ’90s. He was chief executive of a startup called GeoTel Communications Corp., which was acquired by networking giant Cisco Systems in 1999 for about $2 billion.

This year, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, led by Thibault, stepped up to solicit and collect donations to fund the $45,000 Lowell Fourth of July celebration that was cut due to budget constraints.
