My Dad was raised in that sort of situation. I was raised in that sort of situation. My sons were not. It only continues until someone draws the line. I raised two sons on a grand total of 3 swats and one very pointed lecture in private behind a restaurant about not embarrassing the family in public.

One served as a Marine. The other was head of national tech support for a CADCAM software company. Both have loving relationships with their own children and both are now heads of their departments in their respective companies.

You CAN draw the line. If you think you were mistreated, you can make a vow to make certain that you do NOT pass that on to the next generation. And then, you can accept no excuses from yourself and keep that vow.
