The Trump administration’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) outlined the policy change, citing affiliation with a “Communist Party or any other totalitarian party” is “inconsistent and incompatible with the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance”:

“On Oct. 2, USCIS issued policy guidance in the USCIS Policy Manual to address inadmissibility based on membership in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party. Membership in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party is inconsistent and incompatible with the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America, which includes pledging to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States.”

“In general, unless otherwise exempt, any intending immigrant who is a member or affiliate of the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party (or subdivision or affiliate), domestic or foreign, is inadmissible to the United States,” the press release continues.

The East Bay Times reports Colar was the leader of a Black Muslim temple in Oakland and a group that was a spinoff of Your Black Muslim Bakery, after the leader of the bakery was arrested and later convicted of ordering the murder of Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey.

Colar was convicted in 2015 and sentenced to five years in state prison for submitting bogus documents to win security contracts with Alameda County, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.

While not outright calling Trump a white supremacist, Fox News’ John Roberts threw gas on the fire of this speculation, claiming that his query asking for a “definitive” repudiation of white supremacy was “a question that needs to be asked, and clearly, the president’s Republican colleagues a mile away from here are looking for an answer for it too.”

If he wanted an answer, he should have asked Harrison Fields.

Fields, who is black, is an assistant press secretary in the Trump White House. On Thursday, as Roberts engaged in a testy exchange with White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany (we’ll get to that later), Fields decided to add his perspective on the matter.

“As a Black man serving in the Trump White House, I have seen firsthand this Administration’s unwavering support of communities of color,” Fields tweeted.
