In his latest press briefing, Dr. Sean Conley said that the president's health continues to improve since his diagnosis on Friday. Conley and Trump's other doctors added that he could be discharged from Walter Reed hospital as early as Monday. Pompeo leaves for Japan to attend 'Quad' talks
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has left for Tokyo to attend a meeting with the foreign ministers of Japan, India, and Australia.
Speaking to reporters at an Air Force base outside Washington before his departure on Sunday, Pompeo expressed high hopes that he would come away from the so-called Quad talks with "some significant announcements, significant achievements." He stopped short of discussing specifics, but he was apparently referring to the four countries' cooperation in countering China's threats and other issues. Pompeo also said he had a chance to talk with President Donald Trump in an online briefing just before the trip. Trump has been hospitalized and is receiving treatment for COVID-19.
The secretary said the president was "in a great mood" and that "his spirits were great." Pompeo said he "got a little bit of additional guidance for this trip." He added that he was now looking forward to executing it.
Reporters asked if there is any concern about adversaries taking advantage of this moment with the president in the hospital. Pompeo responded that there are "rogue actors" and "malign actors" around the world, but that "the United States is fully prepared" to deal with any situation.
The State Department says the secretary will arrive in Tokyo on Monday evening, Japan time, and attend the Quad talks on Tuesday. It says that on the same day Pompeo will also meet with Japan's Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide for the first time since Suga took office.
Pompeo is expected to discuss Trump's health during the talks.
