Dow Plunges 375 Points After Trump Calls Off COVID-19 Stimulus Talks

The US stock market took a dive on Tuesday, shortly after US President Donald Trump announced via social media that the "economy is doing very well" and he had ordered an end to stimulus negotiations until after the presidential election.

At closing, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index, which had previously enjoyed a 205-point gain, fell by 375.88 points, or 1.3%, whereas the S&P 500 plummeted 1.4%. The Nasdaq Composite dropped by 1.6%.

The New York Stock Exchange saw the indices instantly take a plunge into red territory after Trump revealed that he'd called on officials to end all COVID-19 stimulus talks.

"I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business," he said at 2:48 p.m. local time, less than two hours before the day's trading was set to close.

…request, and looking to the future of our Country. I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business. I have asked…

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 6, 2020

Trump also detailed that he asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to "focus full time on approving my outstanding nominee to the United States Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett."

"Our Economy is doing very well. The Stock Market is at record levels, JOBS and unemployment … also coming back in record numbers. We are leading the World in Economic Recovery, and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!"

"Today, once again, President Trump showed his true colors: putting himself first at the expense of the country, with the full complicity of the GOP Members of Congress," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement published 30 minutes before the stock market closed Tuesday.

"Walking away from coronavirus talks demonstrates that President Trump is unwilling to crush the virus, as is required by the Heroes Act."

She contended that the US president “refuses to give real help to poor children, the unemployed and America’s hard working families.”

Sen. Blackburn: McCabe is ‘beginning to do a little shaking in his boots…fearful of perjuring himself.’

Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn said the American people deserve to know the truth about the FBI’s unscrupulous investigation into President Donald Trump’s campaign and his presidency.

Blackburn, a Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the answers to what really happened during the investigation and those senior bureau officials involved may reside with former Deputy Directory Andrew McCabe. McCabe, who is now an analyst on CNN, was fired by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2018 for lying multiple times to DOJ investigators. He is now refusing a subpoena by the committee to testify over his fear of COVID-19.

“I think [McCabe’s] beginning to do a little shaking in his boots,” Blackburn said. “He is fearful of saying something and then perjuring himself, and he knows that Durham report is coming very soon.”

RELATED: Former FBI Deputy Director McCabe outed by agents, revealing Flynn investigation was a concocted ‘top down’ operation

The Senate Judiciary Committee had to delay the hearing with McCabe last week, after he refused to testify. Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-SC, had McCabe, among a long list of others to testify before the Nov. 3 election.

Blackburn pointed out that McCabe’s refusal to speak to the Senate Judiciary members is revealing considering former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates and most recently former FBI Director James Comey was willing to testify.

She said, even though they failed to remember significant details because “they all were like, Hear No Evil, see, See No Evil” it was McCabe who may have the answers to what truly took place inside the bureau because he was connected to all the players.

I think [McCabe’s] beginning to do a little shaking in his boots,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn. “He is fearful of saying something and then perjuring himself, and he knows that Durham report is coming very soon.”

Blackburn pointed out that she didn’t buy the excuses of those who testified that they couldn’t either remember anything or were unaware of certain circumstances.

For example, she told me, former FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok, who was charged with the Russia investigation and also testified before the committee, “writes in his book, that he briefed Comey on what they were doing.”

“Here’s the thing, somebody cooked up this plot,” she said, referring the attempt to coup President Trump by propagating lies in the media and then a concocted FBI investigation into Trump’s campaign and presidency.

“Somebody gave the order to carry it out, and somebody did the dirty work,” said Blackburn. “And if you’ve got the top three saying, we didn’t know anything was going on, and Strzok saying we were out here doing this, that and the other. Well, McCabe has to know some things, he knows coming to us he would be under oath.”

I told Blackburn her suspicion about McCabe is backed up by several sources I’ve spoken with over the past month who say McCabe is at the center of Durham’s investigation.

In fact, the sources that I’ve spoken to have referred to information that McCabe was aware of, like the fact that the FBI’s primary sub-source, “in that dossier, the dirty dossier” was a suspected Russian spy that the U.S. was monitoring since 2009.

Everyday more and more evidence reveals that there was extensive malfeasance inside the FBI during the Obama administration. There’s also enough evidence to show that the investigations into Trump’s 2016 campaign advisors, like Carter Page, former National Security advisor Michael Flynn and George Papadopolous, are plagued with problems and were used to target Trump in what many have called an attempted coup of a duly elected president.

The most frustrating aspect of the nearly four years of investigations, including the Justice Department’s Inspector General’s investigation, is that no one has actually been held accountable for the malfeasance uncovered, stated Blackburn.

I agree. I said during my podcast that I constantly hear from listeners and readers, “will there ever be justice? will anyone be held accountable.”

Congressional antitrust report rips tech firms for stifling competition

The House Judiciary panel on antitrust released its long-awaited report on competition in digital marketplaces Tuesday after multiple delays and a rocky effort to secure bipartisan support for its proposals.

The Democratic report — which was crafted over 15 months using more than a million documents, testimony gathered in and out of hearings and interviews with hundreds in the industry — paints the country’s biggest tech companies as gatekeepers that stifle competition.

It focuses on Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google, which were worth a combined $5 trillion in September and made up a third of the S&P 500.

The report includes a series of recommendations on how to address the concentration of market power in those firms, including revamping existing antitrust laws and strengthening the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice antitrust team.

The challenge for Democrats now turns to getting bipartisan support for those proposals.

While the investigation launched last June was always billed as a cooperative effort between the parties, support for the recommendations appears to have frayed on party lines.

The release was reportedly delayed Monday in an effort to get Republican support while Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), ranking member of the full Judiciary committee, asked that his colleagues not sign on.

Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), considered the key swing vote on the committee, circulated a draft memo earlier this week obtained by Politico saying that some of the report’s recommendations "are non-starters for conservatives."

The report acknowledges that not every lawmaker will endorse its entirety, but stresses the findings show a need for reform.

“Although we do not expect that all of our Members will agree on every finding and recommendation identified in this Report, we firmly believe that the totality of the evidence produced during this investigation demonstrates the pressing need for legislative action and reform,” it reads. “These firms have too much power, and that power must be reined in and subject to appropriate oversight and enforcement.”

The report describes Amazon as the dominant market for online shopping that has monopoly power over many small- and medium-sized businesses.

It points to several acquisitions of competitors and collection of customer data as having been crucial to Amazon’s growth.

Amazon’s dual role as the operator of the market and a seller in the same marketplace causes an “inherent conflict of interest” that incentivizes Amazon to exploit access to third-party seller data, the report claims.

The report’s findings on Apple focus on the company’s app store.

Gun-Rights Group Sues Philly Over Massive Permit Backlog

Suit: City tells some to wait until 2022 for appointment

A gun-rights group accused the Philadelphia Police Department of illegally forcing residents to wait up to 18 months to apply for a gun-carry permit in a lawsuit.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) said the city has infringed on the rights of local residents by ignoring a Pennsylvania law that requires localities to process applications within 45 days. Val Finnel, the group's Pennsylvania director, said the lengthy wait times actively harm locals who are seeking to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

"They're essentially denying the right to defend yourself," Finnel told the Washington Free Beacon.

The GOA acknowledged the strain that Covid-19 had placed on government agencies, but said the delays—some stretching into 2022—were unprecedented in the region. While some Pennsylvania cities and counties moved the permitting process online or through the mail to accommodate a surge in gun sales, Philadelphia authorities have made no attempt to abide by state law. Finnel pointed to neighboring Bucks County, which has managed to process applications on a walk-in basis without any of the delays Philadelphia residents face.

"If they say they can delay receiving the application, then they can delay it indefinitely," Finnel said. "Our argument is a right delayed is a right denied."

A spokesman for the Philadelphia Police Department declined comment on the pending litigation.

The department has taken action on some appointments. After the Free Beacon published a piece on the months-long waits experienced by some Philadelphia residents, the department reached out to two residents to speed up the process. James Tordella, a medical supply salesman, and Temple Law School alum Jude Joanis saw their appointments moved from January 2021 to October 2020 shortly after their ordeal was first published.

Chris Gonzalez, a south Philadelphia insurance salesman, has not had the same luck. He still has not been able to even talk to anyone in the department to schedule any appointment despite repeated attempts.

"Every time I call, I can never get someone on the line," he told the Free Beacon. "It's a joke."

The GOA suit, which was filed in state court, includes 10 other residents who are not allowed to turn in their applications for months. Two of the defendants have been told they will have to wait until 2022 for an appointment, according to the suit. Finnel said the situation is simply unacceptable.

"They have to figure out a way, like everybody else, of how to handle the problem with COVID going on," he said.

The gun-rights group is asking the court to force the city to accept applications in a timely manner and abide by the 45-day limit for the application process. Finnel said the group hopes a ruling against Philadelphia could be used as precedent for ensuring other Pennsylvania localities do not try and sidestep state law when issuing gun-carry permits.

Facebook & Instagram to purge ALL accounts ‘representing QAnon,’ even those that don’t share ‘violent content’

A new Facebook policy will see all profiles linked to the QAnon conspiracy community wiped from the platform whether or not they promote violence, the company’s latest crackdown on what it claims is a dangerous movement.

Facebook announced the new measures on Tuesday, explaining that the decision updates a policy imposed in August targeting QAnon accounts “containing discussions of potential violence,” broadening the ban to any profiles affiliated with the movement. The policy will also apply to Instagram.

“Starting today, we will remove any Facebook Pages, Groups and Instagram accounts representing QAnon, even if they contain no violent content,” the company said, arguing that the group is tied to other types of “real world harm.”

While we’ve removed QAnon content that celebrates and supports violence, we’ve seen other QAnon content tied to different forms of real world harm, including recent claims that the west coast wildfires were started by certain groups, which diverted attention of local officials from fighting the fires.

The initial ban on accounts promoting violence saw over 1,500 QAnon pages and groups scrubbed from the platform, as well as more than 6,500 linked to other “militarized social movements,” including Antifa and various militia groups. However, the new sweeping ban does not appear to apply to the other movements, singling out the pro-Trump conspiracy community by name.

The move has been blasted as another clamp-down on free expression online, with even some self-avowed opponents of QAnon deeming it “chilling for free speech.”

Others questioned why the new ban targeted QAnon alone, even as a number of militant left-wing groups openly “discuss which city they are going to burn down next.”

Round up the ‘anti-vaxxers’? Enlist religious leaders? Bill Gates warns US needs to brainstorm ways to reduce ‘vaccine hesitancy’

Billionaire software tycoon Bill Gates has urged the US to prepare for a 2021 Covid-19 vaccine rollout by deputizing trusted community leaders to “reduce vaccine hesitancy,” bemoaning rapid spread of “conspiracy theories” online.

The Microsoft founder-turned-vaccine-evangelist painted a mostly rosy picture of a vaccine rollout getting “rich countries” back to normal by the end of 2021 in an interview during the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council on Tuesday.

However, with less than half of Americans saying they’d get a Covid jab – even if paid $100 for it – in a recent survey, Gates then focused his talk on enlisting the nation’s “trust network” to overcome the skeptics.

Lamenting that “vaccine hesitancy is in all countries and predates the pandemic,” Gates suggested American health officials start “thinking about which voices will help reduce the hesitancy, so we can get a level of vaccination that really has a chance of stopping” the virus.

Gates provided the example of challenges the polio vaccine faced in some countries – and the cunning lengths some were willing to go to get their populations jabbed.

In places like Nigeria we had to go to the religious leaders, talk to them, have them speak out, you know, vaccinate their children. So [it is about] understanding the trust network – who is it that you view as an expert. Very few people can look at the formulation or data directly.

Coronavirus czar Anthony Fauci hinted back in June that he was already on the task, revealing the government had a PR blitz planned in which “people [vaccine-hesitant Americans] can relate to in the community – sports figures, community heroes, people that they look up to” – will spread the pro-vaccine gospel.

Gates had typically harsh words for both conspiracy theorists and the social media platforms he believes enable them, complaining that “very titillating things” like the notion that “somebody intentionally made this virus, or that there’s some conspiracy” spread online “so much faster than the truth, which is that it comes from a bat.” Gates called on social media to “slow down or annotate things that actually cause huge damage, like not wearing masks or not being willing to take the vaccine if it proves that it is this key tool to getting back to normal.”

‘Boer Lives Matter’: South African farmers storm court where two men held over murder of white farm worker

Farmers fired shots and carried 'Boer Lives Matter' signs as they stormed a court in eastern South Africa on Tuesday where two suspects were to appear before a judge over the brutal murder of a young farm manager.

Sekwetje Isaiah Mahlamba, 32, and Sekola Piet Matlaletsa, 44, who were arrested on Saturday, were at the Senekal Magistrate's Court in the Free State on Tuesday morning for a pre-trial hearing.

The two men are accused of killing Brendin Horner, 21, whose body was found on Friday at about 6am local time, tied to a pole at the farm he managed in the town of Paul Roux. He had sustained multiple wounds, and a knife was discovered nearby.

Horner’s death came just days after the killing of 44-year-old white farmer Chantel Kershaw, who was strangled in her own garage on September 30. She was allegedly ambushed by a pair of armed black men, according to witnesses. A neighborhood watch group handed those suspected of her attack over to police.

Tensions boiled over outside the court on Tuesday as thousands of people flocked to Senekal to protest against the killings of white farmers.

Footage shows angry demonstrators tipping over a police van, which was later torched.

Crowds were also pictured gathering by the holding cells containing the suspects, while some protesters clutched signs, including some reading “Boer Lives Matter.”

Other footage appeared to show a convoy of tractors heading to the court, while one video purported to show police hurling a tear gas canister towards protesters.

Police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele said the court hearing had been postponed to October 16 for a formal bail application. He said the protesting farmers had demanded that the suspects be turned over to them, and had damaged court property as they forced their way into the cells.

“Two shots were fired from this group but no one was injured,” Makhele told TimesLive. “Thus far the situation is tense, but under control.”

Ex-CIA Director John Brennan Runs to Jake Tapper – Slams DNI Ratcliffe for Releasing Documents Proving He Briefed Obama on Hillary’s Russia Hoax Plans

DNI John Ratcliffe declassified documents on Tuesday revealing former CIA Director John Brennan briefed Barack Obama on Hillary Clinton’s plot to ‘stir up’ a scandal to tie Trump to Russia in order to distract from her email scandal ahead of the 2016 election.

This declassification comes after Ratcliffe released a Russian intel assessment in which he asserted that Hillary Clinton hatched the Russia hoax in order to pin the DNC ‘hacking’ on President Trump.

“In late July 2016, US intelligence agencies obtained insight into Russian intelligence analysis alleging that US Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had approved a campaign plan to stir up a scandal against US Presidential candidate Donald Trump by tying him to Putin and the Russians’ hacking of the DNC. The IC does not know the accuracy of this allegation of the extent to which the Russian intelligence analysis may reflect exaggerations or fabrication,” Ratcliffe wrote to Lindsey Graham.

The Obama-Biden White House was briefed on it by then-CIA Director John Brennan.

Brennan’s handwritten notes were exclusively obtained by Fox News:

“We’re getting additional insight into Russian activities from [REDACTED],” Brennan notes read. “CITE [summarizing] alleged approved by Hillary Clinton a proposal from one of her foreign policy advisers to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service,” Brennan’s notes read.

The notes state “on 28 of July.” In the margin, Brennan writes “POTUS,” but the entire section of the note is redacted.

“Any evidence of collaboration between Trump campaign + Russia,” Brennan’s notes read.

The notes are heavily redacted, except in the margins, which reads: “JC,” “Denis,” and “Susan.”

On Tuesday night John Brennan ran to Jake Tapper on CNN and attacked DNI John Ratcliffe for releasing the damning and incriminating documents.

John Brennan told Jake Tapper the Intelligence Community slammed DNI John Ratcliffe for the release. The former CIA Director then admitted the briefings took place. He suggested that there are more documents that explain his actions.

Consuming Sugary Beverages While Breastfeeding Affects Cognitive Development in Children

A diet high in sugar during adulthood is associated with weight gain, and has also been linked to risk of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and heart disease. New research shows that when consumed by moms during the breastfeeding period, a high sugar diet can also impact developmental outcomes during infancy.

Michael I. Goran, PhD, Program Director for Diabetes and Obesity at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, has studied how sugar can impact family health. His previous research has shown that moms who consume sugary beverages and juices in the months after giving birth are at risk for weight gain, and may also expose their newborns to these added sugars through breast milk. A new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that consuming these beverages during the breastfeeding period may also lead to poorer cognitive development in children nearly two years later.

The participants were 88 mothers who reported sugary beverages and juices consumed per day during the first month of breastfeeding. Their children were assessed using the Bayley-III Scales of Infant Development at 2 years old. Moms who reported greater consumption of sugary beverages and juices had children with poorer cognitive development scores. The researchers speculated that added sugar from the mom’s diet was passed to their infant through breast milk, and this exposure could conceivably interfere with brain development.

“Breastfeeding can have so many benefits,” says Dr. Goran, “but we’re seeing that breast milk is influenced by what moms eat and drink even more than we realized.” He says that limiting added sugars, found in beverages such as soft drinks, may have benefits not only for moms, but also for babies. “Moms may not realize that what they eat and drink during breastfeeding may influence their infant’s development down the road, but that’s what our results indicate.”

“Ultimately, we want babies to receive the best quality nutrition,” says Paige K. Berger, PhD, RD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow and first author of the study. “Our findings may be used to guide future nutrition recommendations for moms during breastfeeding, to better ensure that babies are getting the right building blocks for cognitive development.”

Pesticides and Food Scarcity Dramatically Reduce Wild Bee Population

The loss of flowering plants and the widespread use of pesticides could be a double punch to wild bee populations. In a new study, researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that the combined threats reduced blue orchard bee reproduction by 57 percent and resulted in fewer female offspring. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

“Just like humans, bees don’t face one single stress or threat,” said lead author Clara Stuligross, a Ph.D. candidate in ecology at UC Davis. “Understanding how multiple stressors interplay is really important, especially for bee populations in agricultural systems, where wild bees are commonly exposed to pesticides and food can be scarce.”

The study found that pesticide exposure had the greatest impact on nesting activity and the number of offspring the bees produced. Pesticide exposure reduced bee reproduction 1.75 times more than limiting their food.

IN FIELD EXPERIMENT

The team conducted their research by exposing the blue orchard bee to the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid, the most widely used neonicotinoid in the United States. It’s also among the most frequently applied insecticides in California.

Nesting female bees were set up in large flight cages containing wildflowers at high or low densities treated with and without the insecticide. The insecticide was applied based on label instructions. Bees can be exposed to insecticides by consuming pollen and nectar from the treated flowers. Similar research has been conducted on honeybees in labs, but there has been no comparable research on wild bees in field or semi-field conditions.

FEWER FEMALES, FEWER BEES IN THE FUTURE

The two main factors that affect bee reproduction are the probability that females will nest and the total number of offspring they have. The research found that pesticide-exposed and resource-deprived female bees delayed the onset of nesting by 3.6 days and spent five fewer days nesting than unexposed bees.

Co-author Neal Williams, a pollination ecologist and professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis, said that’s a substantial delay considering bees only nest for a few weeks. The production of female bees is also crucial to determining the health of future bee populations.
