Typhoon Chan-hom feared to become stronger as it approaches closer to Japan

 

Typhoon Chan-hom is expected to develop into a strong tropical cyclone by the morning of Oct. 8, Japan's weather agency said.

 

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the 14th typhoon of the year was located south of the country as of 9 a.m. on Oct. 6, traveling north-northwesterly at a slow pace. The storm had a central air pressure of 992 hectopascals, with a maximum sustained wind speed near its center of 23 meters per second (approximately 83 kilometers per hour) and a maximum gust speed of 35 m/s (126 kph). The weather agency forecasts that by 9 a.m. on Oct. 7, Typhoon Chan-hom's central air pressure will be 975 hectopascals with a maximum sustained wind speed near its center of 30 m/s (108 kph) and a maximum gust speed of 45 m/s (162 kph). Strong winds of at least 25 m/s (90 kph) are feared to lash areas within a 165-kilometer radius of the core of the probability circle.

 

By 9 a.m. the following day, the typhoon is expected to approach closer to the Japanese archipelago, near Minami-Daito Island east of Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, with a central air pressure of 965 hectopascals. A maximum sustained wind speed near its center is forecast at 35 m/s (126 kph) with a maximum gust speed of 50 m/s (180 kph). Strong winds of at least 25 m/s (90 kph) are feared to hit areas within a 260-kilometer radius of the core of the probability circle.

 

The weather agency is calling out to the public to watch out for information updates on the typhoon.
