It shocks the public conscience here, but what he did is legal in Germany, where 14 year-olds can and frequently do consent to sex, and prostitution is also legal.

 

Would his behavior be shocking and reprehensible if he was a German doing the same thing in Germany without breaking any laws?

 

Germans don't seem to think that what he did is shocking or reprehensible. Are they wrong?

This question is important for all of us.

 

If the Germans are saner, calmer and more correct than Americans, who hysterically overreact to everything, then what he did is not wrong and two people may be sent to prison for a total of almost 25 years for something that is not actually morally wrong, apart from being illegal.

 

If the Germans are wrong, then immoral child sexual abuse is happening in Germany on a massive scale with the approval of the public and the authorities, and this is an appalling crime that something must be done about.

 

Either way, something appalling is happening.

 

Are we good people? Do we oppose atrocities?

 

Then we need to either oppose the American laws or the German ones, depending on which laws are immoral.
