California removes Hollywood-style Trump sign, cites ‘traffic hazard’

Large letters reading “TRUMP” in the style of the Hollywood sign appeared above California’s 405 Freeway for a few short hours, before being taken down by state officials but is still catching the attention of the commander-in-chief.

The sign went up sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning, CBS Los Angeles reported, quickly being noticed by commuters traveling on the southbound side of the highway in the Sepulveda Pass in the early morning hours.

On Wednesday morning, President Trump chimed in on the sign on Twitter, sharing a video of it and writing, “Vote TRUMP California. No more blackouts, shutdowns, ridiculous forrest fires, or water “rationing” (coming soon). We can win in California NOW!”

By 9 a.m. Tuesday, workers from the California Department of Transportation were already on the scene pulling down the giant white letters, the local station reported.

Asked by the Los Angeles Times about the sign being taken down, a Caltrans spokesperson said it needed to be removed, arguing it “was a life and safety issue because there were concerns about distracted driving.”

The spokesperson added that the sign was erected on private property, so it could not legally be taken down, only laid on the ground “so it wasn’t a visual distraction.”

Local station KTLA5 reported an entry in the California Highway Patrol’s incident log timestamped for 6:41 a.m. Tuesday morning referring to the sign as a “traffic hazard” because drivers were slowing their cars to take pictures.

The individual who reported the sign to highway patrol was concerned that a fire could be sparked because the sign was placed near dry bush.

Despite their fire concerns, the letters were not removed from the area, instead just being laid down so they could not be seen from the highway.

It was not immediately clear who owned the land or if they were involved in the sign being erected.
