The Jews thought they could out smart the Romans, so they took to 'swallowing all their gold coins' in order to safely smuggle it out of Jerusalem.
The Roman soldiers caught on quick, and started gutting every Jew leaving the city and taking all the gold out of their stomachs and sewn into the hems of their robes.
