In the latest development in the “Cuties” scandal, Netflix has been indicted by a Texas grand jury on charges of depicting lewd images of children.
According to a Tuesday tweet by Rep. Matt Schaefer (R-Tyler), the charges include “lewd exhibition of pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 yrs of age which appeals to the prurient interest in sex.”
The indictment also declares that the film has “no serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value,” a statement with which we wholeheartedly agree.
The French film, created by a Senegalese filmmaker who says the story mirrors her own childhood, has been heavily criticized since long before its September release on the streaming platform.
“It is unethical, and perhaps even criminal, for Netflix to contribute to the societal dangers these children already face,” the American College of Pediatricians’ Dr. Joseph Zanga declared in a scathing press release back in August. “Responsible and ethical adults understand that we have a duty to protect our nation’s children. For the sake of our children’s health and well being, this frightening excuse for entertainment must be deleted from Netflix’s schedule as well as from its library.”
In spite of widespread calls for the film to be removed, Netflix doubled down. Their persistence was met with yet another deluge of subscriber cancellations, jumping to eight times the company’s average last month.
“We have no plans to remove the film at this time,” a Netflix representative told the Post Millennial last month.
This isn’t the first time Netflix has provided a platform to what amounts to little more than child pornography—and will certainly be used as such.
As we reported back in 2018, an Argentinian film depicted two very young girls using pillows for sexual gratification. Calls to remove that film also went unanswered.
However, it’s better late than never for the folks at Netflix to be held responsible for hosting this exploitative filth. If you haven’t yet, do your part: cancel Netflix.
