OPERATION PATRIOT: Dozens Arrested, 5 Victims Rescued During ‘Massive’ Human Trafficking Sting

HOUSTON — Authorities in Houston, Texas, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday the results of an operation targeting sex trafficking in Fort Bend County, Texas.

The operation dubbed “Operation Patriot” targeted sex trafficking organizations and sex buyers from Sept. 9 – 16.

Forty-six individuals were arrested as a result of the operation, including six arrests for promotion of prostitution, 40 arrests for prostitution and six arrests for narcotics.

HSI Houston Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Mary Magness explained why it is critical to target both the trafficking organizations and the sex buyers.

“What we often find is if you only eliminate the supply-side of sex trafficking, another criminal organization will move in to fulfill the demand,” explained ASAC Magness. “So we simultaneously target both the organizations behind the sex trafficking and the people who support it, to more effectively eradicate this vile criminal activity from the community.”

In addition to the 46 criminal arrests, HSI Houston and local law enforcement rescued five victims. HSI employs a victim-centered approach to combat human trafficking, which places equal importance on the identification and stabilization of victims, as the identification and prosecution of traffickers.

“Sex traffickers often rely on physical and sexual abuse, threats of harm, economic and psychological manipulation, and cruelty to force their victims to engage in commercial sex,” said ASAC Magness. “To better confront these realities of human trafficking, we integrate trauma-informed victim support services throughout our criminal investigation.”

Other agencies involved in the operation included: the Department of Family & Protective Services; Department of Public Safety; DeliverFund; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office; Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office; Galveston County District Attorney’s Office; Harris County District Attorney’s Office; Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office; Harris County Sheriff’s Office; Houston Police Department; Missouri City Police Department; Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office; Office of the Texas Attorney General; Stafford Police Department; Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission; Texas Forensic Nurse Examiners; and the YMCA – International.

HSI Houston is a partner in the Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance (HTRA) for the Southern District of Texas. The HTRA is a multidisciplinary human trafficking task force that implements collaborative approaches to combat all forms of human trafficking in the Southern District of Texas.

In FY 2019, HSI Houston, working in conjunction with the HTRA, arrested 205 individuals for human trafficking-related offenses, which accounted for approximately 10% of all human trafficking-related arrests in the U.S.

JP Morgan Pledges $30 Billion To "Fight The Racial Wealth Gap"

JP Morgan, the bank whose employees were recently caught pocketing COVID-19 relief funds destined for small businesses, has reportedly committed billions of dollars to help "advance racial equality" and "fight the racial wealth gap".

According to Axios, the bank announced Thursday that it plans to spend $30 billion over the next five years, which the company says will address some of the biggest drivers of massive wealth inequality between Black and white Americans. The commitment - which is just talk so far, as far as we can tell - makes JPM "by far the largest monetary contributor to efforts by businesses to fight systemic inequality and racism in the US."

This is the statement from @jpmorgan CEO Jamie Dimon attached to the bank's $30 billion commitment to battle the racial wealth gap, systemic racism and inequality. (They used all of those terms in a press release.) https://t.co/6t1gzhMo0H pic.twitter.com/iT6qKu3GEJ

— Dion Rabouin 🇺🇸 (@DionRabouin) October 8, 2020

JPM CEO Jamie Dimon, who most recently through his weight behind the cause of getting his bank's employees back in the office, said that if even a fraction of the companies who are members of the Business Roundtable (a nonprofit that Dimon chairs) follow suit, then the effort would be "unprecedented".

"If a fraction of the members of the Business Roundtable follow suit then you're talking about a more concrete effort than anything we've seen before," Dimon said.

The bank has committed to spending $8 billion to "increase affordable housing and homeownership in underserved communities," JPM said. Another $4 billion will be dedicated to "mortgage refinancing", $2 billion will be spent on "small business lending", and $2 billion in philanthropic capital.

"Systemic racism is a tragic part of America’s history," Dimon said in a statement. "We can do more and do better to break down systems that have propagated racism and widespread economic inequality, especially for Black and Latinx people. It's long past time that society addresses racial inequities in a more tangible, meaningful way."

The bank also committed to "hiring and investment in existing employees to "build a more equitable and representative workforce and hold executives accountable", while promising to hold at least $50 million in deposits at minority-owned financial institutions (free money).

As Axios illustrates the magnitude of JPM's gift with a helpful chart.

Russian President Vladimir Putin Calls For End to Hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh

The Nagorno-Karabakh region saw an escalation of tension on 27 September, with both Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanging accusations of sparking the hostilities. The military actions in the region continue, despite repeated calls by the international community for a ceasefire and resumption of negotiations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged the conflicting sides in the Nagorno-Karabakh military dispute to immediately cease hostilities and exchange prisoners and the bodies of those who have been killed, the Kremlin said.

"After a series of phone conversations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Russian president calls for an end to hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone for humanitarian reasons in order to exchange prisoners and bodies of those killed," the statement said.

The Russian president invited the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers to arrive in Moscow for negotiations.

"The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia are invited to Moscow on 9 October to hold consultations on these issues with the mediation of the Russian Foreign Minister", the statement added.

The statement followed multiple calls by Russia for a ceasefire in the region, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov outlining that a diplomatic settlement in Karabakh must begin with ceasefire without preconditions.

Calls to end hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh have been voiced by multiple members of international community, including Russia, France, Germany, the UN and the US. Turkey expressed its support to Azerbaijan, while Armenia accused Ankara of sending military advisors to the conflict - a move that Turkey has denied.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region saw an escalation of tension on 27 September, with both Yerevan and Baku accusing each other of sparking military hostilities. According to the Third Secretary of the Azerbaijan Mission to the UN, at least 30 Azeri civilians have been killed and 144 wounded in the conflict. Nagorno-Karabakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan said that at least 18 civilians were killed in the unrecognized republic after hostilities broke out.

Among the injured civilians are several journalists, including a Russian blogger, Yuri Kotenok, who was seriously injured in a strike on the Ghazanchetsots church. Doctors are said to be fighting for his life, according to reports.

According to Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan, three Russians suffered injuries, among them two journalists and one local guide.

CDC Adds Being Overweight To List Of Potential COVID-19 Risk Factors

Talk about curious timing.

The CDC has finally added 'overweight peopele' to its list of risk factors for COVID-19, saying that even those who are even a little overweight might be at risk of serious or life-threatening symptoms.

The link between extra pounds and severe Covid-19 grew stronger as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that people who are merely overweight, not just the obese, may be at high risk of serious disease from the infection. The warning, posted on the agency’s website Tuesday, means about two-thirds of Americans could face higher risks.

Nearly 40% of American adults are obese, which the CDC tied to poor outcomes of the infection in late June, and about 32% are overweight, according to the agency. Obese people are more likely to fall very ill with Covid-19 and be hospitalized, and the risk of death from infection increases along with higher body mass index, the CDC has said.

Doctors determine whether people are obese or overweight with a calculation of height and weight aimed at estimating body fat called body mass index. Overweight people have a body mass index of 25 to 30. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index of 30 or higher. For example, a man who is 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 200 pounds would be considered overweight. Add in 25 pounds, and he would be considered obese.

On the CDC's website, the section that describes people who "might be at increased risk", lists being "overweight" with a BMI between 25 and 30.

Mexican Border City Cops Suspected of Giving Radio Support to Gulf Cartel

MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas — An investigation into the local and transit police revealed a shared radio frequency between the Gulf Cartel and officers suspected of cooperating with the criminal organization. As part of the case, the state government took control of the agencies.

The revelations come amid an audit to determine the extent of suspected criminal infiltration. Authorities uncovered missing police radios, unregistered body armor, a foreign video recording system, and police vehicles without serial numbers or plates.

The audits and related raids are part of an effort to capture the regional leader of the Gulf Cartel, Evaristo “El Vaquero” Cruz.

In recent weeks, state police officers have raided ranches and properties in Matamoros that are linked to El Vaquero. Investigators already seized more than 50 cars, horses, two tigers, and other exotic animals.

While allegations about Matamoros’ police forces are not new, a shift came when El Vaquero ordered protests and blockades throughout the city. For several days, Matamoros officials and local law enforcement refused to act. The apparent complicity led the state to intervene.

NY Dem Organized for Group That Protested Terror Leader’s Death

Dana Balter was a core member of group that protested Soleimani's death

A New York Democrat previously organized for a far-left group that protested against the killing of Iranian general and designated terrorist Qassem Soleimani.

Dana Balter, Democratic nominee for the state's 24th Congressional District, became a "leading voice" for the Central New York Solidarity Coalition. In January 2020, the coalition protested against the assassination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps general Soleimani, who was killed in a January drone strike.

The group is committed to "protecting all Central New Yorkers from the dangers of the Trump-Pence-Ryan administration's policies, appointees, and rhetoric," according to its website. The group's mission came to include defending the IRGC, which the Trump administration designated as a terrorist organization in 2019. It attracted more than 125 protesters, who chanted, "Iran is not our enemy, war is not the answer."

Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and coalition forces, with thousands more injured. At the time of his death, Soleimani was actively planning to attack American diplomats and military installations alike in the Iraqi-Iranian region. Iraq war veteran Robert Bartlett, who received a Purple Heart after being wounded by a roadside bomb, told the Washington Free Beacon that Balter's association is concerning.

"She's basically a traitor, simple as that," Bartlett said. "I want [voters] to know that if they vote her in, they're voting for ‘death to America,' because that's what Iranians chant."

Balter did not respond to a request for comment.

An assistant visiting professor at Syracuse University, Balter has become a staple in social justice politics in the western New York area and became involved in the coalition as early as 2017. The coalition touts itself as aligned with "anchor organizations," which include a group that advocates for "reparations to Palestinians," and with an organization that demonstrates for the purpose of "defunding the police and abolishing the Prison Industrial Complex."

Balter has staked out similar positions to this network of advocacy organizations during her campaign. In a July interview, Balter told reporters that she hoped Americans would "reorient our thinking" toward policing.

The issue has attracted the attention of her opponents. New York GOP chairman Nick Langworthy reacted to Balter's record with frustration.

California Dems Push Affirmative Action Against Wishes of Voters

New polling finds voters don't want racial preferences in public institutions

New polling shows that affirmative action is unpopular among California voters, even as California Democrats move to reinstate the practice at public universities.

A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California shows 47 percent of California voters plan to vote against Proposition 16, a ballot measure that would repeal the state's ban on racial preferences in public institutions. Just 31 percent of voters say they support the measure, and 22 percent are undecided. Prop 16 has nonetheless garnered approval from powerful left-leaning stakeholders, including the University of California system, which voted unanimously to endorse the ballot measure in June. The UC's board of regents said its endorsement was part of the "amazing momentum for righting the wrongs caused by centuries of systemic racism in our country."

Vice-presidential candidate and former California attorney general Kamala Harris is another big-name proponent of Prop 16, despite its unpopularity in her own state. Before she became a U.S. senator, Harris filed legal briefs in favor of race-based admissions at both the University of Texas and the University of Michigan. The UC system—the top lobbying force behind Prop 16—was the top donor to her 2020 presidential bid.

Likewise, Reps. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Karen Bass (D., Calif.), former Democratic presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Tom Steyer, and Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti (D.) have all endorsed the measure. So have a slew of teachers' unions and a Los Angeles Unified School District board member, who represents the second-largest public school district in the country.

Stop Prop 16, a coalition of voters against race-based affirmative action, told the Washington Free Beacon that current polling dramatically underestimates how many voters are against the proposition. Tony Guan, a spokesman for the group, said its internal polling found that more than 80 percent of verified voters plan to vote down Prop 16. Still, he worries that many people are afraid to express those views publicly.

"Some of our endorsers … are worried about the attacks from the [vote yes] side," Guan told the Free Beacon. "In the state legislature, [opponents of Prop 16] did not vote yes or no, but they were attacked very badly by their Democrat peers. They called [opponents of the measure] racist."

Nonetheless, the group believes it can overcome that stigma and attract undecided voters. Guan said that when he is out knocking on doors and passing out flyers, many people are not aware of what Prop 16 is. But "once they learn about it they are against it," he added. "If people were looking for jobs before 1996—when it was legal to discriminate based on race—they remember how bad this discrimination was."
