Still here!

I think of the exchanges of population between Greece and Turkey. Those two countries were essentially one under Ottoman rule. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed, Greeks and Turks, Christians and Moslems, were given the opportunity/encouraged to move to the appropriate territory. There was recognition on both sides that no possibility of coexistence would be found. History militated against it. Values, religion, language militated against it. Something similar happened upon collapse of the British Empire in India, with the separation of India and Pakistan and significant migration.

History suggests that the same kind of process might arise in the US. I’m certainly not confident that it could be ruled impossible. America has had one opportunity for healing after widespread conflict. It might not get a second. Be under no doubt, this has been a war of minds, even if not of arms. The cleft between Americans over culture, religion, and politics is profound. Sometimes separation is a more realistic objective than total victory.
