Navy to honor memory of 17 sailors killed in 2000 jihadi attack on destroyer Cole

Monday marks 20 years since 17 sailors were killed in a jihadi bombing of the Navy destroyer Cole while in a Yemeni port.

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer was conducting a scheduled refueling in Aden Harbor the morning of Oct. 12, 2000 when a motorized dinghy filled with explosives approached and detonated, ripping a 40-foot hole in the starboard side of its hull.

The ship’s engine room, galley and living quarters were badly damaged. In addition to those killed, 38 more were wounded in the blast.

“We let our guard down,” retired Navy Capt. Joe Bouchard told 13NewsNow. “The Navy and all the services were in the post-Cold War lull. … We were not really prepared for the kind of attack that happened to the Cole.”

At the time, Bouchard was commanding officer of the Cole’s homeport of Naval Station Norfolk.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation determined the attack was carried out by members of al-Qaida.

The refueling stop was scheduled in a four-hour window, suggesting the terrorists had to have known about the ship’s presence ahead of time. The Cole had broken away from other warships in the Arabian peninsula, there to enforce trade sanctions against Iraq.

The attack on the Cole wasn’t the first time Al-Qaida targeted the U.S. In December 1992, the jihadi group conducted three bombings targeting U.S. troops in Aden. In 1993, al-Qaida aided the warlords who shot down U.S. helicopters and killed 18 U.S. soldiers in Somalia. In August 1998, the group also carried out the bombings of U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, killing some 300 people and injuring more than 5,000.

The Yugoslav Wars: Biden’s Belligerent Militarism Revisited

Ironically, while three US presidents have been accused of impeaching the Constitution for relatively minor offenses, including Bill Clinton for perjury and Donald Trump for using political influence to discredit opponents, no US president has ever been charged, let alone convicted, of waging devastating wars of aggression.

Unless impeachment proceedings are initiated against war criminals, including George Bush and Dick Cheney for invading Afghanistan and Iraq and Barack Obama and Joe Biden for waging proxy wars in Libya and Syria, the impeachment provisions in the US Constitution would serve as nothing more than a convenient tool for settling political scores.

The fact is not only the domestic law enforcement and judicial systems of the Western powers but also international institutions, such as International Criminal Court, have been used as tools of perception management for solely prosecuting alleged “war criminals” of former Yugoslavia and impoverished African nations and real war criminals have never been prosecuted for the crimes of destroying entire nations with their militarism and interventionism.

Before being elected as Obama’s vice president in 2008, as a longtime senator from Delaware and subsequently as the member and then the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Joe Biden, alongside inveterate hawk Senator Joe Lieberman, was one of the principal architects of the Bosnia War in the Clinton administration in the nineties.

Reflecting on first black American president Barack Obama’s memorable 2008 presidential campaign, with little-known senator from Delaware, Joe Biden, as his running-mate, Glenn Kessler wrote for the Washington Post [1] in October 2008:

“The moment when Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. looked Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic in the eye and called him a ‘damned war criminal’ has become the stuff of campaign legend.

“The Democratic vice presidential nominee brings up the 1993 confrontation on the campaign trial to whoops of delight from supporters. Senator Barack Obama mentioned it when he announced he had chosen Biden as his running mate.

“During vice presidential debate with his counterpart on the Republican ticket, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Biden twice gave himself credit for shifting US policy on Bosnia. The senator from Delaware declared that he ‘was the catalyst to change the circumstance in Bosnia led by President Clinton.’ At another point he noted: ‘My recommendations on Bosnia — I admit I was the first one to recommend it. They saved tens of thousands of lives.’”

Instead of “saving tens of thousands of lives,” the devastating Yugoslav Wars in the nineties in the aftermath of the break-up of the former Soviet Union and then the former Yugoslavia claimed over 130,000 fatalities, created a humanitarian crisis and unleashed a flood of millions of refugees for which nobody is to blame but the Clinton administration’s militarist policy of subjugating and forcibly integrating East European states into the Western capitalist bloc.

Regarding Washington’s modus operandi of waging proxy wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, since the times of the Soviet-Afghan jihad during the eighties, it has been the fail-safe game plan of master strategists at NATO to raise money [2] from the oil-rich emirates of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Kuwait; then buy billions of dollars’ worth of weapons from the arms markets [3] in the Eastern Europe; and then provide those weapons and guerilla warfare training to the disaffected population of the victim country by using the intelligence agencies of the latter’s regional adversaries. Whether it’s Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Libya or Syria, the same playbook was executed to the letter.

Raising funds for proxy wars from the Gulf Arab States allows the Western executives the freedom to evade congressional scrutiny; the benefit of buying weapons from unregulated arms markets of the Eastern Europe is that such weapons cannot be traced back to the Western capitals; and using jihadist proxies to achieve strategic objectives has the advantage of taking the plea of “plausible deniability” if the strategy backfires, which it often does. Remember that al-Qaeda and Taliban were the by-products of the Soviet-Afghan jihad, and the Islamic State and its global network of terrorists were the blowback of the proxy war in Syria.

Iran-backed militias offer truce for US troop withdrawal

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi militias backed by Iran have agreed to temporarily halt attacks targeting the American presence in Iraq on the condition that U.S.-led coalition troops withdraw from the country in line with a parliamentary resolution, three of the militia officials said Sunday.

The militia officials spoke to The Associated Press just hours after a roadside bomb targeted a convoy transporting equipment for the U.S.-led coalition on a highway south of Baghdad, damaging one vehicle, an Iraqi army statement said. The attack prompted questions over whether such a truce could hold across all militia factions.

Roadside bombs and especially rocket attacks targeting the U.S. Embassy — located inside the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad — have become a frequent occurrence and have strained ties between Baghdad and Washington.

The militia factions offered a truce and will refrain from targeting the U.S. in Iraq, including the the U.S. Embassy, on the condition that American forces withdraw within an “acceptable timeframe,” said Mohammed Mohie, a spokesman for the powerful Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah.

“If it does not withdraw, the resistance factions will resume their military activities with all the capabilities available to them,” he said.

Two other factions from different Iran-backed groups echoed Mohie’s comments, without specifying a length of the truce, and said it was open-ended. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give statements.

Iraqi lawmakers vote in January on a non-binding resolution to oust U.S.-led coalition troops in the country, following a Washington-directed drone strike that killed Iranian general Qassim Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis outside Baghdad’s international airport.

‘Time to Choose Faith over Fear’: California Church Hosts ‘Freedom Sunday’ Calling for Churches to Reopen

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council (FRC), will join Pastor Jack Hibbs at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino, California, at 8 p.m. eastern time for “Freedom Sunday,” an event calling on churches to reopen for in-person worship.

“The church is more than essential,” Perkins said in an announcement about the event, referring to conoravirus restrictions imposed on churches because they are not “essential.”

“It’s time to choose faith over fear,” Perkins said.

“It’s time to honor God over man,” Perkins said. “It’s time for a court that will honor and uphold our First Freedom. It’s time for Freedom Sunday.”

“Freedom Sunday is a call for the resumption of in-person church services in obedience to Scripture (Hebrews 10:25) and a freedom guaranteed by the Constitution,” the FRC announcement said. “Across the nation, many state and local government officials continue to take unconstitutional steps to restrict worship services even as they’ve allowed the reopening of casinos, tattoo parlors, abortion centers, liquor stores, and most all other businesses.”

The 90 minute event, which will be live-streamed at www.freedomsunday2020.com, will feature remarks by Pastor Garry Leist, Pastor Che Ahn, Pastor Rob McCoy, Pastor Cristian Ionescu, Pastor Brian Hermsmeier, Pastor Amado Huizar, Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Albert Mohler, Eric Metaxas, FRC Executive Vice President General Jerry Boykin, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), FRC Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell, Larry Taunton, Dr. Carol Swain, Virginia Prodan, FRC Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the Human Coalition Action Dean Nelson, and Dr. Wayne Grudem.

“Government officials continued to take unconstitutional steps to restrict churches from worshipping, unfairly silence them, and hold them to a different — and even discriminatory — standard,” Perkins said. “Does it make sense to reopen casinos, tattoo parlors, abortion centers, and liquor stores while keeping houses of worship closed?”

“Scripture instructs Christians to honor the government — unless it oversteps its authority,” Perkins said. “With government officials exceeding their constitutional authority, we are left with the clear command in Hebrews 10:25 that believers should be ‘not neglecting to meet together.’”

Perkins said churches should use “proper health and safety measures to their services, both as a matter of prudence and out of love for one another” but that “the time is now” to reopen places of worships across America.

'There Are Advantages': Israel Touts its Own Antibody Cocktail as Better Than Trump's

During President Donald Trump's treatment at Walter Reed military hospital, he received an experimental polyclonal antibody cocktail created by the US biotechnology company Regeneron.

Israeli researchers have rolled out an antibody cocktail touted as potentially superior to that of Regeneron's, the antibody therapy Trump received, The Times of Israel reported.

The reported antibody cocktail was developed by a scientific team at Tel Aviv University, and is entirely based on artificial human antibodies, while Regeneron was reportedly made with antibodies produced by mice.

“Our antibodies are something very similar to what President Trump received,” immunologist Natalia Freund told The Times of Israel. “The difference is that the cocktail he received was reportedly based in part on antibodies produced by genetically modified mice, while these are based on human antibodies, which means that, in terms of safety, stability and lower likelihood of adverse effects, there are advantages.”

The Israeli cocktail, however, has not yet been tested on humans, with Freund saying that the team is negotiating with pharma companies to start trials. According to the scientists, the cocktail could be useful for both treatment and prevention of coronavirus.

“Our vision is to use it both as a treatment for critical patients and for protection of populations at risk and people who are exposed to coronavirus,” Freund said. “The hope is that this could be injected and could give protection for some weeks, and be re-administered until the much-awaited vaccine finally arrives.”

While no human trials have started, researchers tried the cocktail on cells, and the virus could not infect them. Moreover, according to Freund, since the scientists have now obtained the sequence, production of antibodies is no longer limited.

The antibody cocktail developed at the Tel Aviv University was made out of thousands of antibodies from a reported 18 recovered patients, out of which the most promising patterns were chosen.

“Our six most promising antibodies bind different target areas on the virus,” said Freund. “It’s not a single mechanism, but rather several complementary mechanisms of action. The antibodies identify various weak spots on the virus, bind these spots and neutralize it.”

The Regeneron cocktail was given to Trump when he was admitted to Walter Reed hospital to receive treatment for the coronavirus after he and his wife tested positive on 2 October. Trump praised the cocktail, among other treatments, for what appeared to be a speedy recovery, as he returned to the White House four days after being hospitalized and was declared to be non-contagious by his personal physician on Saturday.

Money laundering time? Covid-19 can survive on CASH for 28 days, study claims

Coronavirus can survive on certain surfaces, including banknotes and mobile phone screens, for nearly a month in cooler climates, new research by Australian scientists suggests.

Covid-19 is able to survive in the open for a significantly longer length of time than was previously thought, according to a study by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) published by the Virology Journal.

“Establishing how long the virus really remains viable on surfaces enables us to more accurately predict and mitigate its spread, and do a better job of protecting our people,” said CSIRO’s chief executive, Dr. Larry Marshall.

According to the research, the virus has proven to be “extremely stable” and able to thrive on smooth, non-porous surfaces, including paper and plastic banknotes, glass, and steel. Kept at around room temperature – 20C (68F) – Covid-19 stayed alive for a whopping 28 days, which is some 10 days longer than the survival time of the regular flu virus. It should be noted that the experiment was carried out in the dark, as UV light is very effective in killing the coronavirus.

Higher temperatures are significantly less comfortable for the virus. At 40C (104F), it was able to survive for less than 24 hours. At 30C (86F) Covid-19 demonstrated quite mixed results, staying alive for some seven days on stainless steel, plastic notes and glass, but only three days on vinyl and cotton cloth. On paper cash, the contagious virus was still detected after 21 days under those conditions.

“The persistence of SARS-CoV-2 demonstrated in this study is pertinent to the public health and transport sectors. This data should be considered in strategies designed to mitigate the risk of fomite transmission during the current pandemic response,” the study concluded.

Such findings suggest that the upcoming winter in northern hemisphere will provide even more comfortable conditions for the virus. The news is certainly good for Australia itself, though, as the country is now heading into summertime. Anyway, taking your cash sunbathing and keeping it in hot places might be a good idea during the pandemic.

Globally, the coronavirus tally has already surpassed the 37 million mark, while nearly 1.1 million people have succumbed to the disease, latest figures by the Johns Hopkins University show. The US, India and Brazil remain the worst-affected nations, accounting for over a half of all global cases.

Caitlin Johnstone: 'Successful' people are misery superspreaders in a world that values conquest and power over growth and healing

Thanks to society's insane view of 'success' as nothing more than the amassing of influence, the most powerful people in the world are also the most miserable, dysfunctional and traumatized. Just look at the White House.

The term “super-spreader” has been popping up a lot in mainstream news media and Democrat-aligned partisan rhetoric in reference to President Trump and his habit of hosting of events without social distancing precautions which led to a spike in positive Covid-19 tests throughout the White House.

It’s an interesting phrase, because it highlights not just the way America’s plutocrat president conducts himself in the midst of a novel coronavirus, but the way he and his ilk live their lives generally as well.

In our society, those who are uplifted, rewarded and applauded are those who make it their sole focus in life to obtain as much influence over as many lives as possible. That’s basically how our insane society defines “success”: having a whole lot of employees, a whole lot of subservients, a whole lot of consumers, a whole lot of fans, a whole lot of people who listen to you and think you’re important. The more lives you affect, the more successful you are considered to be.

What this means is that those who wind up having the most influence over the most people are the ones who made doing so their highest priority in life. Not to become a better person, a good parent, a good spouse, a good friend, a good caregiver, a good listener, but to getting promoted, growing the business, crushing competitors, becoming famous, becoming influential, becoming powerful, becoming president.

That’s what the most influential human beings in our world have poured their life’s energy into, generally speaking. Not into personal maturity and healing, but into conquest and power. Everything in our society encourages this, from the esteemed universities that wealthy go-getters attend to the movies and shows we all watch as we are trained in what to value.

Which causes a lot of problems, because what our society really needs above all else is healing and maturity. Being a small human in our world is a highly traumatic experience; we’re surrounded by confused giants who move in scary, unpredictable ways and unwittingly pass on to their children a lot of the trauma they picked up from their own childhoods, and it leaves us with a lot of unconscious mental habits which govern the way we relate to the world in an unconscious and unhelpful way.

Everyone carries trauma and delusion with them. Nobody gets to skip past this reality. We would live in a much healthier society if people prioritized becoming a healthy human being: healing their past trauma, becoming conscious of their inner processes, emotionally maturing, learning to love themselves, and learning to see life with clear eyes.
