The Traveling Wilburys - "Nobody's Child" Lyrics

(Writers: Cy Coben, Mel Foree)

As I was slowly passing, an orphans home today

I stopped for just a little while to watch the children play

A lone boy standin', and when I asked him why

He turned with eyes that could not see, and he began to cry

I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child

Just like a flower I'm growin' wild

No mama's arms to hold me no daddy's smile

Nobody wants me, I'm nobody's child

In every town and village

There are places just like this

With rows and rows of children

And babies in their cribs

They've long since stopped their cryin'

As no-one ever hears

And no-one there to notice them or take away their fears

Nobody's child, they're nobody's child

Just like a flower they're growin wild

No mama's arms to hold them, no daddy's smile

Nobody wants them they're nobody's child

Nobody's child, they're nobody's child

Just like a flower they're growin wild

No mama's arms to hold them, no daddy's smile

Nobody wants them they're nobody's child

Nobody wants them they're nobody's child

“This was the beginning of The Wilburys and was recorded to help Romanian orphans. They wrote the second verse.”

“Trying to expose human trafficking, died doing it, I salute your efforts and pray for us all. “

“Not sure what you are talking about as this version of the song wasn't recorded specifically in regards to human trafficking. The song was on the "Nobody's Child: Romanian Angel Appeal" charity album in 1990 to benefit Romanian orphans after the fall of Ceaucescu. Knowing this the lyrics tend to make a different meaning. The project was organized by Olivia Harrison. For more check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobody%27s_Child:_Romanian_Angel_Appeal “

“My dad grew up in foster care and was badly abused. He never really talked about it unless he was drunk and he would sing this song over and over and cry. I didn't understand why until I became an adult. RIP dad.”

“Tom Petty sings the first 4 lines of the verses ("as i was slowly passing…"). George Harrison sings from line 5 to 8 from the verses ("a lonely boy was standing…"). Jeff Lynne sings the first part of the chorus ("I'm nobody's child…") and Bob Dylan the second part of the chorus ("got no mommy's kisses…"). “
