Senate Democrats: Amy Coney Barrett Will Kill Americans on Obamacare

Senate Democrats on Monday warned that if Judge Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed to the Supreme Court, it would mean the death of Americans on Obamacare.

Democrats paraded posters of men, women, and children on Obamacare during the confirmation hearings arguing that Barrett would vote to end Obamacare when it came up in the Supreme Court.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) highlighted emotional stories of people on Obamacare in her state.

“This well could mean that if Judge Barrett is confirmed, Americans stand to lose the benefits that the ACA [Affordable Care Act] provides,” she said.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) also highlighted two people in his state on Obamacare.

“I don’t suggest that Judge Barrett wants to devastate the lives of these two Vermonters, but these are the consequences if her stated views on the law prevail in the Supreme Court and if Republicans are successful in filling this vacancy prior to November 10,” he said.

Showing a picture of “Kenny” a young boy in a baseball uniform, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) asked, “Wouldn’t you want him on your team? I would.”

Durbin said that President Donald Trump nominated Barrett “to the bench to do his political chores, abolish the ACA, rule in his favor on any election contest, and more,” putting the health of Kenny in danger.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said that he would already oppose Barrett, simply because of the threat she posed to Obamacare.

“Your nomination is about the Republican goal of repealing the Affordable Care Act,” he said.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) featured a picture of two girl softball players, noting that one of them had heightened diabetes.

“They get, that with one stroke of a pen, one judge can decide if millions of Americans in lauding their family would lose their insurance,” Klobuchar said.

Trump SCOTUS Nominee Amy Coney Barrett: “I Believe in the Power of Prayer”

The Senate Judiciary Committee began its SCOTUS confirmation hearing for Trump nominee Amy Coney Barrett on Monday.

As expected, the Democrats used this hearing as an opportunity to abuse Amy Coney Barrett.

Amy Coney Barrett, a devout Catholic and mother of 7, stood strong and her statement to the Judiciary Committee was powerful.

“I would like to thank the many Americans from all walks of life who have reached out with messages of support over the course of my nomination. I believe in the power of prayer, and it has been uplifting to hear that so many people are praying for me,” she said.

“Nothing is more important to me than my family,” she said.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham on Sunday told Maria Bartiromo that he predicts Amy Coney Barrett will be confirmed to the Supreme Court by October 27th.

Nursing home residents stage heartbreaking protest outside facility: 'Rather die from COVID than loneliness'

A moving sight

Residents of a long-term nursing and rehabilitation facility in Colorado organized a protest against the state's COVID-19 restrictions on Thursday.

According to KCNC-TV, the protest took place at Fairacres Manor in Greeley.

The station reported that many of the facility's residents — many of them in wheelchairs — stood outside of the facility and held signs that read "Rather die from COVID than loneliness," "Give us freedom," "Prisoners in our own home," and more.

In a statement, Ben Gonzales — assistant administrator at the facility — said that Fairacres' residents are not happy.

"They want to be able to hug their grandchildren, they want to be able to hold the hands of their loved ones," he said.

Resident Council President Sharon Peterson — a 75-year-old woman — told the outlet that she and other residents are desperate for a change.

"We used to be lucky here at Fairacres to show each other what we mean to one another and we cannot do that anymore," Peterson said. "Fairacres follows the rules and, with that, we think they would keep us safe while being able to be with our families again."

Peterson, who helped to organize the demonstration, said that the protest was necessary because "one thing we have to look forward to is a simple hug."

"It gives us meaning," she said. "Fairacres needs to be commended on how well they have cared for all of us, but it's time for our voices to be heard."

Gonzales said that several staff members joined those at the protest, and pledged that the staff wants residents to know "that their voice does matter."

Gonzales also said that Fairacres staff and residents sent letters to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as well as Gov. Jared Polis's office in August, begging for rules to be relaxed to permit physical contact. Gonzales said that no one received a response to the inquiries.

In response to the protest, Polis issued a statement.

“We absolutely understand how difficult it has been for residents of residential care facilities and their families," Polis's office said on Friday. "Social interaction is essential to physical and mental health, and so we have provided guidance to residential care facilities that allows for that interaction while also keeping residents safe from COVID-19."

DHS: Transnational Organized Crime, a “Devastating Threat” to the US

Transnational organized crime is “an acute and devastating threat” to the United States as it’s causing thousands of drug overdose deaths, fosters corruption and decreases citizen’s confidence in government and banks, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

Transnational criminal organizations, TCOs, jeopardize U.S. citizen’s health, safety and national interest, says a report called Homeland Threat Assessment, HTA, published beginning of October.

“Beyond their complicity in the 71,000 drug overdose deaths in the U.S. last year, TCOs destabilize partner nations, decrease citizen confidence in good governance, foment corruption, and destroy confidence in the international banking system,” it says.

It’s the first time the Department of Homeland Security has published such a report. It particularly focused on the threat of Mexican-based drug cartels on the southern border.

“Of the Mexico-based TCOs, the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) networks pose the greatest cross-border drug smuggling threat in the near-term,” it said. “They dominate the lucrative trafficking of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine to the United States.”

Mexican drug cartels have grown more and more sophisticated in recent years as they have carved out powerful empires through the illicit trade. Last week, a small plane loaded with 400 kilograms of cocaine was engaged in a high speed aerial chase by Mexican military aircrafts including jets and helicopters, before ultimately crashing in a remote part of the country.

Mexico-based cartels pose the greatest threat because they often control territory, including the one close to the border, and “co-opt parts of government, particularly at a state and local level,” said the HTA. “Although COVID-19 has disrupted some cartel operations, their ability to move large quantities of illicit goods into and throughout the Homeland remains largely intact.”

UK: Another Unaoil’s Ex-Official Sent to Jail

A London court sentenced the former partner of the Monaco-based oil and gas consultancy Unaoil to three years and four months in jail for bribing Iraqi officials to secure contracts worth some US$1.7 billion in post-occupation Iraq.

Iraqi-born British citizen Basil Al Jarah conspired with others to pay nearly $17 million in bribes to public officials at the South Oil Company and Iraqi Ministry of Oil to have Unaoil construct oil pipelines, offshore mooring buoys in the Persian Gulf, and other infrastructure projects, the U.K. Serious Fraud Office (SFO) said Thursday.

Al Jarah pleaded guilty in July 2019 to five offences of conspiracy to give corrupt payments in relation to two projects – one to install three mooring buoys and one to construct two oil pipelines.

His co-conspirators on the mooring buoys bribery, Stephen Whiteley and Ziad Akle, were this summer found guilty of one and two counts, respectively, of conspiracy to give corrupt payments.

Akle was sentenced to five years in jail, Whiteley to three years, while another co-conspirator in the case, Paul Bond, is to face retrial in January 2021.

Unaoil is at the centre of international investigative efforts over allegations its employees paid hundreds of millions of dollars to officials in nine countries over a period of almost 20 years to secure lucrative contracts for their clients.

Those contracts, according to SFO, formed part of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil’s ‘Master Plan’ to “rebuild its oil export capacity and revitalise the Iraqi economy after years of war and occupation.”

“This was a classic case of corruption, where powerful men took advantage of the desperation and vulnerability of others to line their own pockets,” SFO Director, Lisa Osofsky, said.

Al Jarah and his co-conspirators were “driven by greed and heartless avarice,” she said. Their actions “compromised the fairness of the bidding process and ultimately drove up the price a war-torn country had to pay for essential infrastructural upgrades, earning Unaoil and its clients vast profits in the process.”

Governments Have Failed to Learn from the Cambridge Analytica Scandal

A week before the parent company of Cambridge Analytica filed for bankruptcy, one of its employees opened a UK firm that has since been providing similar “behavioral modification” training to clients including the Canadian and Dutch militaries.

Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL) Group, Cambridge’s parent company, drew on psychological and social science research to distill techniques aimed at manipulating group behavior.

For almost two decades, SCL sold its services to clients around the world. They included political parties trying to sway voters in scores of countries, and the British and American militaries attempting to influence populations and insurgents in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

But SCL did not survive its firm’s best-known campaigns: Its subsidiary, Cambridge Analytica, sparked a scandal due to its involvement in Donald Trump’s 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, and questions were raised over the role of Cambridge Analytica and an affiliate in the successful movement the same year for Britain to leave the European Union.

Cambridge Analytica was subsequently found to have misappropriated data from Facebook, which it used to build profiles of about 87 million users. The scandal forced the entire group of companies to file for insolvency on May 1, 2018.

Just a week earlier, on April 25, SCL’s director of operations, Gaby van den Berg, formed a new company, Emic Consulting Limited, UK company records show. Since then, van den Berg has been marketing Emic’s services — training courses based on those developed by SCL — to military clients in Canada and her native Netherlands. The founder of SCL, Nigel Oakes, has also lectured for Emic’s courses.

Van den Berg declined to comment for this article.

The fact that Emic was able to rise from the ashes of SCL while the Cambridge Analytica and SCL debacle was still under investigation shows that governments have not learned the lessons of 2016.

It's vital that scandals such as this are properly investigated to protect against unethical business practices, conflicts of interest, security issues and data rights infringements. And governments must improve procurement processes to prevent the hiring of companies spun off from firms under active investigation.

So far, this is not happening. Governments are failing us. Such firms continue to provide training, or engage directly, in tactics to influence the behavior of citizens.

As if to underscore the negligence of U.K. authorities, the country’s Information Commissioner’s Office told me late last month that it had halted its investigation into data misuse, without making a public statement. It says it is no longer publishing a promised report on the content of SCL and Cambridge Analytica servers.

‘No more slackening’ - French PM says local lockdowns could continue at least until the end of 2020

French Prime Minister Jean Castex has said he expects further lockdowns across France as coronavirus infections continue to surge and has recommended the French to limit their social life.

There would be no relaxation of Covid-19 measures anytime soon, Prime Minister Jean Castex said while speaking to the franceinfo news channel on Monday morning.

Castex took the opportunity to echo the words of the health Minister, Olivier Veran, reinforcing the seriousness of the situation and urging people not to have multiple dinner parties and regulate their own homes.

The reality of the second wave is here… there can be no more slackening.

Castex highlighted the likelihood of further local lockdowns until the end of year at the least, with Montpellier and Toulouse becoming ‘maximum alert’ zones from midnight on Tuesday.

The two cities will be joining Paris, Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Grenoble and Saint-Etienne that have been placed on the highest alert level earlier. The local lockdowns are set to last for 15 days before being reviewed. Meanwhile, Castex assured people that the government’s economic support would also be extended in line with local lockdown measures.

While Castex, who served as the mayor of a provincial town of 6,000 people before becoming PM in July, did not rule out countrywide lockdown measures, he claimed “generalized reconfinement” should be avoided at all cost.

Claiming that French people were premature in their consideration of the virus’s demise, the PM announced that France will get an updated ‘StopCovid’ tracing app on October 22, admitting the original app, which alerts people to possible Covid exposure, was not efficient.

Castex who had previously been criticized for not downloading the app himself, pledged he will download the updated one upon its release.

Who funds the riotous American left & why? The globalist billionaire class, which uses it to build corporate socialism

Why do giant corporations and billionaires fund Black Lives Matter and Antifa, both avowed socialist groups? And why do the leftists accept their aid? They both want a kind of socialism, but only one of them could get their way.

If you’re at all familiar with the corporate and billionaire funding sources behind Black Lives Matter and Antifa and the socialist commitments of these groups and their leaders, you’ve probably wondered why the ‘capitalist class’ would support a movement whose doctrine is apparently antithetical to their own interests. Aren’t these funders capitalists after all, and don’t capitalists naturally oppose socialism?

And why do American leftists dance like marionettes attached to strings pulled by globalist billionaires? Don’t they understand that they’re actually serving the masters they claim to oppose?

The answer is not so simple as the World Socialist Website suggests: “The aims of the Black Lives Matter movement are aligned with those of Wall Street and the US government.” Nor is the answer that BLM/Antifa have merely ‘sold out’ to capitalists. Nor is the donor class making a mistake, or merely interested in racial equality. The answer is that the corporate and billionaire elites prefer a kind of socialism – namely, ‘corporate socialism’.

Corporate socialism

And what is corporate socialism? Corporate socialism is not merely government bailouts for corporations. It is a two-tiered system of ‘actually-existing socialism’ on the ground, paralleled by a set of corporate monopolies on top. (‘Actually-existing socialism’ is a pejorative term used mostly by dissidents in socialist countries to refer to what life was really like under socialism, rather than in the perfidious books of Marx and his epigones.)

Wealth for the few, ‘economic equality’ under reduced conditions for the many – corporate socialism is a form of neo-feudalism.

In Wall Street and FDR, historian Anthony C Sutton described corporate socialism, as developed in the 19thth century, and distinguished it from state socialism, as follows: “[The] robber baron schema is also, under different labels, the socialist plan. The difference between a corporate state monopoly and a socialist state monopoly is essentially only the identity of the group controlling the power structure. The essence of socialism is monopoly control by the state using hired planners and academic sponges. On the other hand, Rockefeller, Morgan, and their corporate friends aimed to acquire and control their monopoly and to maximize its profits through influence in the state political apparatus; this, while it still needs hired planners and academic sponges, is a discreet and far more subtle process than outright state ownership under socialism…We call this phenomenon of corporate legal monopoly – market control acquired by using political influence – by the name of corporate socialism.”

Dan Loeb Wins? Disney Announces Reorganization, Will Focus On Video Streaming… But Keeps Dividend

In what may be the fastest successful activist campaign ever, just 3 work days after Dan Loeb lobbed a letter at Disney, urging the company to DITCH its $3 billion annual dividend and instead to spend the money to expand its streaming services, the company announced after the close on Monday "a strategic reorganization of its media and entertainment businesses" although it did not concede that it was doing so under pressure from the Third Point billionaire but "in light of the tremendous success achieved to date in the Company’s direct-to-consumer business and to further accelerate its DTC strategy."

Disney said that under the new structure, it would focus on developing and producing original content for the Company’s streaming services, as well as for legacy platforms, while distribution and commercialization activities will be centralized into a single, global Media and Entertainment Distribution organization; furthermore, a new star, Kareem Daniel, who previously headed up consumer products within the theme-park division, will now take over distribution for the Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu streaming services.

The new Media and Entertainment Distribution group will be responsible for all monetization of content—both distribution and ad sales—and will oversee operations of the Company’s streaming services. It will also have sole P&L accountability for Disney’s media and entertainment businesses."

The creation of content will be managed in three distinct groups—Studios, General Entertainment, and Sports—headed by current leaders Alan F. Horn and Alan Bergman, Peter Rice, and James Pitaro.

The newly launched Media and Entertainment Distribution group kills two birds with one stone: not only does it seemingly placate Loeb and other activist shareholders, but it also gets points for corporate responsibility, promoting a minority executive as the new group will be headed by Kareem Daniel, formerly President, Consumer Products, Games and Publishing.

Judge Barrett: U.S. deserves SCOTUS ‘that interprets our Constitution and laws as they are written’

Judge Amy Coney Barrett, in her opening statement Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, while touching on her family and personal life, also emphasized that she would interpret the Constitution as it is “written.”

“I believe Americans of all backgrounds deserve an independent Supreme Court that interprets our Constitution and laws as they are written,” the circuit judge said. “And I believe I can serve my country by playing that role.”

Senate Democrats have been clamoring to get Judge Barrett to speak about Roe v. Wade, with liberals fearing that if Barrett, who is devoutly Catholic, is appointed to the court, she will help overturn the landmark ruling on abortion. They have been wanting Barrett to speak directly about the issue.

RELATED: Sen. Kennedy recounts Kavanaugh hearings: It was ‘like the cantina bar scene out of Star Wars’

Barrett, who identifies as an originalist, also touted her time clerking for Justice Antonin Scalia as part of doubling down on her conservative-originalist bonafides, saying that Justice Scalia’s reasoning “shaped me.”

“His judicial philosophy was straightforward: A judge must apply the law as written, not as the judge wishes it were,” she said. “Sometimes that approach meant reaching results that he did not like. But as he put it in one of his best known opinions, that is what it means to say we have a government of laws, not of men.”

Barrett then highlighted her beliefs about the court’s role in the public life of a free society.

“Courts have a vital responsibility to enforce the rule of law, which is critical to a free society. But courts are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong in our public life,” she said. “The policy decisions and value judgments of government must be made by the political branches elected by and accountable to the People. The public should not expect courts to do so, and courts should not try.”

With the first day of confirmation hearings over, three more days of hearings remain. Tuesday and Wednesday will allow senators to question Judge Barrett on a variety of topics and allow her to respond accordingly. Thursday will see outside witnesses testify before the committee for or against the appointment of Barrett. It is expected that on October 22 the committee will vote to move her nomination to the Senate floor to appoint her to the Supreme Court. Assuming all goes according to plan, the full Senate is expected to vote on her confirmation on October 29—less than a week before the presidential election.
