Three weeks. Three weeks. Three Weeks. So yesterday may well have been our last National Columbus Day. It will almost certainly be the last time an American president releases a “Columbus Day Proclamation” and shares praise for the “American heroes” who “tamed the wilderness.”

As much as the president wants to praise Columbus for traveling the world in pursuit of spices, the president hasn’t actually kept up the tradition. I, on the other hand at least pre-covid, was living it. This has brought me face-to-face with so many people sincerely grateful for America’s contributions to the world, and I can tell you honestly this is a great country like no other. As an American there is much you can feel rightfully proud about.

One of our greatest strengths as a nation is that we’ve had enough success that we can be honest about our failures. Few of our failures are so total as our treatment of our Native American community these past 400 years. For a U.S. president in the 21st century to still be using their office to keep alive the manufactured myth used to justify the holocaust against the Native Americans that they were too violent to live together in peace with the benevolent European “settlers” is simply too much. It’s so past time for him to go.

Take nothing for granted. You are a Cook. You are far more respected than you know. Speak out about the importance of voting, but please actually work to make sure those you speak to have a realistic plan to fill out a ballot and get it to where it needs to be in time for it to make a difference. If we all do that then this all can be over and the healing can begin.

And seriously it’s time to be done with Native American team names and mascots. It should be enough that virtually every legit Native American organization and the American Psychological Association have come out for their immediate retirement. But if you need to understand before you support change, it all comes back to the crimes the U.S. government has committed against the Native American community. Small government crimes, like those against Harlon and Enrique, can be done behind closed doors. Big crimes the size of the holocaust against the American Indians have to be committed in the open so they need a massive lie to hide behind.

The lie they chose was that the Native American people, like the lions, the tigers, and the bears so popular in sports team naming, were too wild and too savage to be lived with peacefully. If you want to understand the Native American objection to these team names and why this is so harmful to the development of their children, it’s not just that our government committed this crime against them, it’s that we as American citizens blamed the victims for those crimes. Let’s just stop, and let’s stop now.

And right now the crimes against Harlon and Enrique are behind a closed door. Let’s open that door by watching Harlon's video. And it’s Tuesday again, the very best day for announcing you’ve quit the Republican Party. Clearly family values, small government, paying your debts, telling the truth, and sharing your life with a dog or a cat are no longer what being a Republican are all about. If you actually cared about those values, and you aren’t comfortable with nothing more than being cruel to immigrants and the gay community and Native Americans, it’s time to alert the bus driver you are getting off at the very next stop.
