In the old days, you had to own a newspaper or get on TV (one of 3 networks) to get the message our, or discredit it. It was easier to bury news that was inconvenient. Now there is a digital din of thousands of voices competing for your attention. If you are inclined to trust and go along with authority, the old days were comforting. You knew what to think. If you were powerful enough, you could supply those thoughts.
The MSM is still working on the old model. It isn't dead yet, and they are desperate to stuff the genie back in the bottle. Concern about misinformation and outright censorship is how they are doing it.
The internet is a big problem if you want to control the narrative, but they are trying.
