I Lost My Best Friend To QAnon

Qanon might be an American conspiracy, but cases like my friend show we here in Britain can no longer consider this a faraway, absurd fascination.

By Laura

Like many other people, Tim (not his real name) had always maintained a casual interest in conspiracy theories. After all, who hasn’t indulged in hypotheses about UFOs over a pint?

But this one was different.

It was cultish, involved real people, and made claims that were deeply anti-semitic and damaging. This one was QAnon, the rapidly spreading conspiracy theory that, after originating online in the US, is now reportedly gaining ground here in the UK. Said to be led by an anonymous leader called Q, the repeatedly debunked conspiracy primarily revolves around the idea that President Trump is a patriot secretly working against the ‘deep state’ to reveal an extensive, elite network of child abusers, baselessly accusing high-profile figures from Hillary Clinton to Tom Hanks to Chrissy Teigen.

EXPLAINED

What Is QAnon? The Wacky Conspiracy Theory Twitter Is Cracking Down On

As lockdown took hold, Tim gradually phased from reposting funny TikToks to sharing outlandish posts on Facebook from unverifiable sources. During our weekly chats, I gently refuted his posts with news reports disproving his sources. But, without irony, he would always angrily tell me I was “brainwashed”, and that my consumption of mainstream media made me “part of the problem.” I was hurt and shocked, of course, but also alarmed: we’d had our fair share of arguments over the years, but never have I seen him be this combative. Over the next few weeks I continued trying to reason with him, to no avail. Eventually I was unfriended and blocked from viewing his Facebook profile. My calls and messages to him went ignored.

Just like that, a friendship of fifteen years ended. Not hearing from him after the first week sent me into a daze, considering we had exchanged memes nearly every day for years. I was overcome with pangs of guilt, wondering if I did enough to persuade him, or could have perhaps attempted my reasoning with him in a less overwhelming manner.

For Tim, it was only in the last six months that his obsession with QAnon really took hold. Having lost his job at the start of lockdown, he spiralled into frustration and anxiety and sought solace on Facebook groups and forums.

I also felt conflicted, wondering how much of this indoctrination was actually his doing. Conspiracy theories tend to spread more easily during uncertain times, often as a means for people to gain control and make sense of what’s happening in their lives. Understandably, many have become vulnerable during a pandemic that has thrown life as we know it into disarray. For Tim, it was only in the last six months that his obsession with QAnon really took hold. Having lost his job at the start of lockdown, he spiralled into frustration and anxiety and sought solace on Facebook groups and forums, eventually joining those with a focus on QAnon and similarly outlandish conspiracy theories.

After losing Tim’s friendship I, too, found support online – on the Reddit forum r/QAnonCasualties. Consisting of close to 30,000 members, the group has been a place for many around the world to vent their frustrations about estranged family members and friends lost to QAnon. I’d initially chanced upon the site whilst researching ways to get through to QAnon believers, but after it became clear that Tim was a lost cause, I found myself coming back to the forum to find communal empathy and make the process of grieving my friendship feel less isolating. No one else in my social circles had ever experienced anything remotely similar.

MORE

Worryingly, I’ve seen an increase in posts from others in the UK. The large attendance at the anti-lockdown protest in London last month was testament to the delusion of QAnon gaining ground in Britain, where a number of signs bearing the unmistakable “Q” logo and their slogan “Where we go one, we go all” (or “WWG1WGA”) were spotted in a largely maskless crowd that also supported conspiracy theories such as 5G causing coronavirus, coronavirus being a hoax, and vaccines causing autism.

QAnon is also being propelled to the mainstream by a growing number of Instagram influencers and self-styled wellness gurus, with followers numbering in the multimillions, not to mention Donald Trump himself, who has given implicit approval of the conspiracy by claiming they are people who “love our country”.

This mainstream credibility of QAnon has threatened the safety of innocent people, as individuals claiming to be or know the anonymous “Q” have accused people who have openly disagreed with Trump of being “deep state operatives”. Of course, these are outlandish claims, and anyone can claim or manufacture this “knowledge”. But given the increasing ubiquity of QAnon, I fear that these claims will come to be recognised as legitimate, when in reality they are simply disguises by disingenuous trolls to propagate racist and anti-Semitic views, even amongst unwitting (I hope) pawns like Tim.

We are living in one of the most socially and politically fraught moments in our lifetime, and conspiracy theories like this threaten to widen the divide even more.

News that major platforms such as Facebook, Etsy, and Depop have committed to banning QAnon-related posts and products may seem like good news. Yet knowing Tim’s deeply held anti-media beliefs – yet another product of QAnon – a part of me fears that any official action to combat its presence on these sites may be used to reinforce the self-styled “Q Army” claims of censorship by the media, and therefore only strengthening their mistrust of mainstream news and society.

I also worry such commitments may be too little, too late. As has come to be the norm for social media platforms, rules have been inadequately and unevenly applied. In the case of QAnon many Facebook groups remain active, and individual high-profile accounts are unaffected by this ban. Though I’m frustrated that I may have intervened too late to be able to dissuade Tim, I’m angry at these platforms for having allowed such misinformation to spread as quickly as it has. Investigations have revealed that Facebook’s recommendation algorithm had routinely pointed users who had expressed interest in other conspiracy theories to QAnon groups.

As it becomes mainstream, no longer can we consider QAnon a faraway, absurd fascination. Increasingly we will find people in our lives impacted in some way by these baseless accusations. We are living in one of the most socially and politically fraught moments in our lifetime, and conspiracy theories like this threaten to widen the divide even more.

Never would I have imagined someone in their 20s – let alone my own best friend – would have their lives taken over by such an improbable conspiracy, to such an extraordinary extent. Tim’s internet savvy was not enough to prevent him falling into this trap, and I fear that anyone, young or old, could be next.

USS Barry cruises through Taiwan Strait after Beijing blasts McCain’s

South China Sea transit

By SETH ROBSON | STARS AND STRIPES

Published: October 15, 2020

A Navy destroyer passed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, nearly a week after the Chinese military challenged another U.S. destroyer’s presence in the nearby South China Sea.

The USS Barry cruised through the strait in accordance with international law, according to a statement from U.S. Pacific Fleet. It was the 12th such transit by a U.S. warship this year. The last was made Aug. 30 by another guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey.

“The [Barry’s] transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the statement said. “The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows.”

On Oct. 9, another destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, “asserted navigational rights and freedoms” in the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands, a 7th Fleet spokeswoman, Cmdr. Reann Mommsen, said in an email Thursday.

The McCain was warned by the Chinese military and told to leave, Col. Zhang Nandong, a spokesman for the People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command, told the country’s state-run Global Times the same day.

Such operations seriously infringe China’s sovereignty and national interests, and damage regional peace and stability, he told the newspaper.

Patrick Buchanan: Is war with China becoming inevitable?

"The Indians are seeing 60,000 Chinese soldiers on their northern border," Secretary of State Michael Pompeo ominously warned on Friday.

He spelled out what he meant to commentator Larry O'Connor:

"The Chinese have now begun to amass huge forces against India in the north. … They absolutely need the United States to be their ally and partner in this fight."

Pompeo had just returned from a Tokyo gathering of foreign ministers from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or "Quad," the group of four democracies — U.S., Japan, Australia, India —whose purpose is to discuss major Indo-Pacific geostrategic issues.

Exactly what kind of "ally and partner" the U.S. is to be "in the fight" between India and China over disputed terrain in the Himalayan Mountains was left unexplained. We have no vital interest in where the Line of Control between the most populous nations on earth should lie that would justify U.S. military involvement with a world power like China.

And the idea that Japan, whose territorial quarrel with China is over the tiny Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, thousands of miles away, would take sides in a Himalayan India-China conflict also seems ludicrous.

Yet, tensions are rising between the U.S. and China, as the list of ideological, political and economic clashes continues to lengthen.

And there is a transparent new reality: China seems in no mood to back down.

When, after a year of demonstrations for greater democracy, the Hong Kong government failed to quell the uprising, Beijing stepped in and took control. The U.S.-led democracies that had been cheering on the Hong Kong marchers and protesters did nothing, and they have done nothing since to reverse Xi Jinping's political coup but prattle on about "values."

Lately, the democracies have been protesting, and rightly so, the inhumane treatment of the Uighur peoples in Xinjiang in China's west.

Han Chinese have been moved into the region to swamp the local population of Turkic and Muslim Uighurs and Kazakhs and bring about the demographic change Beijing desires. "Reeducation camps" have been established to cleanse Uighurs of their ethnic and religious identities and convert them into loyal and reliable Chinese Communists.

In a speech in late September, Xi declared that Beijing's policy of eradicating the ethnic and religious identity of the minorities of Xinjiang through state-driven education has proven "totally correct."

He vowed to imprint a Chinese identity "deep in the soul" of the peoples living there. "Our national minority work has been a success," said Xi, "It must be held to for the long term."

Xi makes no apology for — indeed, he is proud of — using state power to impose the state ideology upon the peoples he rules, and he openly repudiates our democratic values as inapplicable in his country.

Our rejection of China's claims to virtually all of the reefs and atolls in the South China Sea is also being ignored. Beijing's warnings grow louder and more pointed as the U.S. continues to send warships, the latest being the USS John McCain, close to islets claimed by China.

What is our strategy here? Are we prepared for a naval and air clash in these waters? What would be the U.S. strategic goal?

The Chinese are now responding angrily and defiantly to what they see as the provocations of sending high-level U.S. officials, and selling new weapons, to Taiwan, which China regards as its lost province.

Again, what is our purpose in playing the Taiwan card now?

If it is to provoke a fight, then are we prepared for a war in the Taiwan Strait or South China Sea? Do we think the Chinese will capitulate?

Is this being done to "stand up to China" before Nov. 3?

Which is the party here that is engaged in bluster and bluff and which is the party that seems deadly serious as it views its vital interests and territorial rights as challenged?

There has been talk of the Quad evolving into an Asian NATO that embraces the major democracies in the Indo-Pacific Theater.

But the essence of NATO is Article V, where the U.S. commits itself to treat an attack on any one of some 30 nations as an attack on us.

Is there anything like this in the cards?

Australia, Japan and the U.S. are not going to war with China over its border with India, or its ethnic concentration camps in Xinjiang, or its seizing Hong Kong and atolls in the South China Sea.

When this election is over, this country has to think through what we are and are not willing to fight China for.

Xi Jinping dismisses our concerns over Hong Kong and the Uighurs, and he appears willing to fight for Taiwan and for what Beijing holds in the South China Sea, rather than see it permanently lost.

Are we?

China unveils shocking detail on new satellite-hunting warship as PLA missile threat SOARS

CHINA has revealed new details regarding an advanced new warship which is allegedly capable of tracking satellites hundreds of miles above the Earth.

By EDWARD BROWNE

PUBLISHED: 01:59, Thu, Oct 15, 2020 | UPDATED: 02:44, Thu, Oct 15, 2020

The ship, called the Type 055 but also known as the Nanchang, is a guided-missile destroyer which was commissioned earlier this year. New details of the ship have now been revealed in a video aired by China’s state broadcaster CCTV last week.

The 12,000 ton-displacement ship is also able to defend against stealth aircraft thanks to an advanced dual-band radar system.

Its radar can also detect satellites orbiting at heights of up to 500 kilometres.

This could enable the ship to not only track the satellites’ movements, but also orchestrate missile attacks against them, analysts have said.

The radar technology has prompted discussion between military observers, according to Chinese media.

China had initially hailed the Nanchang as a “leap forward” in its naval technology when it was revealed earlier this year.

According to China’s state-owned Global Times newspaper, the ship is 180 metres long and 20 metres wide.

No Improper Activity Is Found in ‘Unmasking’ Requests Under Obama

Trump and Republicans in Congress saw evidence of plot to spy on his incoming administration

By Sadie Gurman

Updated Oct. 14, 2020 10:47 pm ET

A federal prosecutor’s review found no improper activity by Obama administration officials who requested the identities of Americans whose names were redacted in classified intelligence reports around the time of the 2016 presidential election, two officials familiar with the matter said.

The prosecutor, John Bash, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, left the Justice Department last week for a job in the private sector. At the direction of Attorney General William Barr, Mr. Bash reviewed Obama officials’ requests for “unmaskings,” a common practice in which authorities request and receive the names of U.S. citizens mentioned in intelligence reports, which often include intercepted communications of foreign officials under electronic surveillance.

President Trump and Republicans in Congress cited the unmasking requests as evidence of a plot by senior Obama officials to spy on Mr. Trump’s incoming administration. In particular, they pointed to unmasking requests of conversations that included Mr. Trump’s incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

The news was reported earlier by the Washington Post.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec declined to comment.

Mr. Bash’s review, announced in May, came as part of a broader, ongoing criminal investigation Mr. Barr ordered into the origins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Russia probe, led by John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut. Mr. Bash was asked to review whether the unmasking requests were improper, and his research was intended to be folded into Mr. Durham’s probe, officials said. Mr. Barr has told top Republicans not to expect findings or new indictments by Mr. Durham before the Nov. 3 presidential election, dealing a disappointment to Mr. Trump and his supporters in Congress. They had hoped the probe would shed new light on the underpinnings of the investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The General Education Board was a philanthropic non-governmental organization which was used primarily to support higher education and medical schools in the United States, and to help rural white and black schools in the South, as well as modernize farming practices in the South. It helped eradicate hookworm and created the county agent system in American agriculture, linking research as state agricultural experiment stations with actual practices in the field.

The Board was created in 1902 after John D. Rockefeller donated an initial $1,000,000 dollars to its cause. The Rockefeller family would eventually give over $180 million to fund the General Education Board. Prominent member Frederick Taylor Gates envisioned "The Country School of To-Morrow," wherein "young and old will be taught in practicable ways how to make rural life beautiful, intelligent, fruitful, re-creative, healthful, and joyous."[1] By 1934 the Board was making grants of $5.5 million a year. It spent nearly all its money by 1950 and closed in 1964.

That seemed crazy, on the face of it, but slowly, I began to realize that the bells and confinement, the crazy sequences, the age-segregation, the lack of privacy, the constant surveillance, and all the rest of the national curriculum of schooling were designed exactly as if someone had set out to prevent children from learning how to think, and act, to coax them into addiction and dependent behavior.[5]

David Rockefeller (June 12, 1915 – March 20, 2017) was an American banker who served as chairman and chief executive of Chase Manhattan Corporation. He was the oldest living member of the third generation of the Rockefeller family, and family patriarch from August 2004 until his death in March 2017.[2] Rockefeller was the youngest child of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and a grandson of John D. Rockefeller and Laura Spelman Rockefeller.

He was noted for his wide-ranging political connections and foreign travel, in which he met with many foreign leaders. His fortune was estimated at $3.3 billion at the time of his death in March 2017.[1]

Central Intelligence Agency ties

Rockefeller was acquainted with Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Allen Dulles and his brother, Eisenhower administration Secretary of State John Foster Dulles—who was an in-law of the family[26]—since his college years.[27] It was in Rockefeller Center that Allen Dulles had set up his WWII operational center after Pearl Harbor, liaising closely with MI6, which also had their principal U.S. operation in the Center.[28] He also knew and associated with the former CIA director Richard Helms as well as Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt Jr., a Chase Bank employee and former CIA agent whose first cousin, CIA agent Kermit Roosevelt Jr., was involved in the Iran coup of 1953.[29] Also in 1953, he had befriended William Bundy, a pivotal CIA analyst for nine years in the 1950s, who became the Agency liaison to the National Security Council, and a subsequent lifelong friend.[30] Moreover, in Cary Reich's biography of his brother Nelson, a former CIA agent states that David was extensively briefed on covert intelligence operations by himself and other Agency division chiefs, under the direction of David's "friend and confidant", CIA Director Allen Dulles.[31]

Why Are DOJ Alums, Bar Leaders Speaking Out for Conscience Now?

Oct. 15, 2020, 4:00 AM

Joshua P. Bogin

Former Department of Justice trial attorney Joshua P. Bogin explains why he was one of more than 800 signatories on an open letter supporting DOJ attorneys who stand up to partisan actions by Attorney General William Barr. The letter is aimed to help preserve public trust that DOJ professionals are not simply pawns of whatever administration occupies the White House.

Three former American Bar Association presidents and eight former federal judges, along with more than 800 lawyers, signed an open letter, sponsored by Lawyers Defending American Democracy, expressing support for Department of Justice attorneys who stand up to overtly partisan actions by Attorney General William Barr. As a Justice Department alum, I was proudly among the signers on the Oct. 8 letter.

Every lawyer for whom the halls of the DOJ have been a professional home knows the calling to a greater good. From the Criminal Division to the Lands and Natural Resources Division, to everything in-between, DOJ lawyers are taught that the bar is higher for them. As the U.S. Supreme Court said in Berger v. United States: “The United States Attorney is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation [is] to govern impartially, and whose interest, is, that justice shall be done. As such, he is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law .”

Thus, DOJ lawyers toil not only to prevail in their cases, but to represent the American people in serving fair and impartial application of law. They must be certain that any case they bring is supported by overwhelming facts and the law. Most importantly, as the Justice Manual says: “The rule of law depends upon the evenhanded administration of justice. The legal judgments of the Department of Justice must be impartial and insulated from political influence.”

Career DOJ lawyers historically have navigated the transitions from one political party to the other. Long-serving professionals often face policy positions that shift from administration to administration on issues ranging from antitrust enforcement to school desegregation and voting rights. Government lawyers understand that presidents are entitled to their person at the helm of the DOJ. But leadership changes and policy differences did not, in my experience, mean retreat from the core responsibility of DOJ attorneys, and certainly did not present themselves as levers to promote the re-election of a sitting president.

What makes these times different, and why is this letter warranted now?

AUnited States Postal Service (USPS) worker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, charged with delaying or destroying mail has been linked to QAnon conspiracy theories online, according to reports.

Sean Troesch, 48, a City Carrier who worked out of the Post Office in Mount Oliver, is one of two USPS workers accused of dumping undelivered mail by prosecutors.

According to the criminal complaint, an allegation was made that a mail carrier was seen taking bags of mail from his vehicle and placing them into trash bags on or around October 8.

On Sunday, October 11, a Special Agent with the office of USPS Inspector General received a report that Troesch had placed nine trash bags in front of his house in the Baldwin area of Pittsburgh, one day before pickup was scheduled in his neighborhood.

GM, Sam

You ever try to love a woman who just made loving her impossible?

She always tried to put you down as she was always struggling for "supremacy" in her mind, because of her inner fears, which if she really looked at them, she would find that they were all unfounded?

Then one day as you are picking up your child at the "neutral" in-laws location, you just one time wanted to tell her Mother, who could never see your side of the story let alone admit that she raised a complete bitch, how it truly was and that people should really take a close look at how they are rearing their children!? kek

Trump 'not happy' with Barr, won't commit to keeping AG in potential

second term

The Justice Department found no evidence of wrongdoing and declined to release its report publicly or to file any charges in Obama-era "unmasking."

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is "not happy" with Attorney General William Barr after the Justice Department's investigation of the Obama administration found no wrongdoing and quietly concluded with no criminal charges.

Trump made the comments to Newsmax TV. He also declined to say whether he would keep Barr on as attorney general for a potential second term.

"Can't comment on that. It's too early. I'm not happy, with all of the evidence I had, I can tell you that. I am not happy," Trump said in the interview.

Trump has praised and criticized Barr in previous interviews, and he has used the Justice Department as a cudgel to go after perceived political enemies.

Recently, news emerged that the Justice Department had concluded an investigation commissioned by Barr into the Obama-era "unmasking" of people named in national security documents related to the Russia investigation — a practice that Trump and conservatives pundits claimed was a political conspiracy.
