Los Angeles International Airport officials are investigating reports of someone wearing a jetpack in the flight path, the second such report in a month.

An air traffic controller at the US airport radioed a pilot warning there was someone wearing a jetpack at about 6500 feet (2km). The precise location was unknown. LAX and Federal Aviation Administration officials said they could not comment further.

The FBI is investigating the latest sighting, according to sources familiar with the latest probe. Federal officials are also investigating an earlier incident in which two commercial pilots said they saw a man in a jetpack flying around the eastern approach to LAX six weeks ago.

In the August 29 incident, the control tower at LAX received reports about the jetpack around 6.45pm (local time).

"Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jetpack," an American Airlines pilot stated in a call to the control tower.

"American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?" the tower operator answered.

"Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude," the pilot responded.

"We just saw the guy pass us by in the jetpack," a pilot from Jet Blue Airways then told the tower, which warned another pilot about the sighting.

"Only in LA," the air traffic controller said at one point.

Hunter Biden pursued deals that would be 'interesting for me and my family' with major Chinese energy company, a second batch of secret emails has revealed

New leaked emails from Hunter Biden show his apparent involvement with a major Chinese firm as he discussed lucrative deals that would be 'interesting for me and my family'.

The son of the Democratic presidential nominee communicated with China's largest private energy company, CEFC, in the latest trove of messages unearthed by the New York Post from Hunter's personal laptop.

In one email sent to Hunter in May 2017 titled 'Expectations', details of 'remuneration packages' for six people in a business venture were discussed.

He was identified as the 'chair/vice chair depending on agreement with CEFC', an apparent reference to the now bankrupt Shanghai conglomerate China Energy Co.

Hunter's pay was '850' and the correspondence also noted how he 'has some office expectations he will elaborate'.

The revelations come after emails purported to come from Hunter's laptop appeared to show him making an introduction between his powerful father and a Ukrainian energy firm on Wednesday.

Gas company Burisma' adviser Vadym Pozharskyi thanked Hunter for 'an opportunity to meet your father' in an email sent in 2015, according to the stash of data given to the New York Post by Rudy Giuliani.

Biden dismissed the findings, and his spokesman Andrew Bates said the paper 'never asked the Biden campaign about the critical elements of this storyโ€ฆmoreover, we have reviewed Joe Bidenโ€™s official schedules from the time and no meeting, as alleged by the New York Post, ever took place.'

In the latest cache, one email appears to outline a 'provisional agreement' where 80 per cent of the 'equity' would be shared equally among four people whose initials related to Hunter and three other recipients.

The sender of the email, James Gilliar, from consulting firm J2cR, said: 'I am happy to raise any detail with Zang if there is shortfalls?'

Zang appears to be a reference to Zang Jian Jun who was the former executive director of CEFC.

In another 2017 email, Biden reportedly discussed a deal with Ye Jianming, a since-vanished chairman of CEFC.

Hunter struck a deal for half-ownership of a holding company that would have provided him with more than $10million a year.

But Ye has not been seen since he was taken into custody by Chinese authorities in 2018 amid rumored links to the Chinese military and intelligence services.

CEFC went bankrupt earlier this year after it was unable to repay its huge debts after warnings over its lack of transparency and dealings with sanctioned Russian firms.

Biden wrote that Ye had been influential in improving a three-year consulting contract with CEFC that would pay him $10million annually just for introductions.

He was given half ownership of a holding company to sweeten the deal, with Ye owning the other half.

Biden wrote: 'Consulting fees is one piece of our income stream but the reason this proposal by the chairman was so much more interesting to me and my family is that we would also be partners inn the equity and profits of the JV's [joint venture's] investments.'

His email was sent to Gongwen Dong who has been linked to the purchase of two luxury Manhattan apartments for a total of $83million, which were bought by companies linked to Ye, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A photo from August 2017 appears to show a flowchart of the ownership of Hudson West which is split equally between Hunter Biden and 'Chairman'.

A report on Biden's business dealings released last month found Hudson West III opened a line of credit in September 2017.

Credit cards issued against the account were used by Hunter, his uncle James and James's wife Sara.

They purchased more than $100,000 worth of items including airline tickets, Apple products, hotel and restaurant bookings, according to the report released by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

Hudson West has since been dissolved and Hunter's law firm Owaco PC was one of its two owners the report said.

The emails are among a trove being referenced by Giuliani and his team after the owner of a computer repair shop in Delaware recovered data from a MacBook pro laptop that was dropped off and never retrieved.

The computer was seized by the FBI and its contents shared with the Post by Giuliani.

Giuliani's lawyer Bob Costello said there are some 40,000 emails on the hard drive including thousands of texts. It also includes images of Hunter 'in very compromising positions,' Costello told Fox News.

Also seen in the emails was an agreement from one of Ye's associates to pay Biden a retainer of $1million for counsel on US law.

The offer was made by former Hong Kong government official Chi Ping Patrick Ho, who has been convicted in Manhattan for two schemes to pay $3million in bribes to African government officials for oil rights.

He served a prison sentence of three years and was deported to Hong Kong in June.

The New York Post is yet to receive comment on the new emails from Biden's campaign, his lawyer, nor the Chinese businessman.

But Biden's lawyer has previously dismissed the stories, accusing Giuliani of dishonesty.

Hunter Biden story trips social media misinformation alarms

In 2016, hacked emails and foreign meddling shaped the political fight, and social media took much of the blame. Afterwards, the platforms designed circuit breakers to avoid a repeat in 2020.

What's happening: Those breakers tripped Wednesday at both Facebook and Twitter to stop the spread of a New York Post story that reported allegations about Joe Biden's son Hunter, based on what the paper said were emails provided to it Sunday by Rudy Giuliani.

Yes, but: The action by the platforms drew a swift backlash from conservatives โ€” with the ironic result of drawing more attention to the material.

The big picture: For years, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has positioned Facebook as a free-speech champion. "When it's not absolutely clear what to do, we should err on the side of free expression," he said almost exactly a year ago in a speech at Georgetown.

Zuckerberg's sense of what's "absolutely clear" has apparently evolved since then, as Facebook is increasingly banning fringe movements, prohibiting Holocaust denial and flagging questionable content around the presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic and white-supremacy groups.

Facebook announced Wednesday that it would slow the distribution of the Post story while its third-party fact checkers reviewed it.

By taking this slow-down approach, Facebook is answering critics who have pointed out that its take-down policies often kick in only after malicious posts have been seen by millions.

Meanwhile, Twitter took even stronger action, removing all tweets that linked to the Post story.

Twitter cited its "Hacked Material Policy," which says Twitter doesn't "permit the use of our services to directly distribute content obtained through hacking that contains private information, may put people in physical harm or danger, or contains trade secrets."

What they're saying: Conservatives in Congress and beyond immediately protested.

"This is a Big Tech information coup. This is digital civil war," tweeted Sohrab Ahmari, op-ed editor at the New York Post.

Between the lines: The nature of the Post story, which relies on a trove of emails claimed to have been found on a laptop at a repair shop and funneled to Giuliani, echoes the "hack and leak" scenario that disrupted the 2016 election โ€” and that newsrooms and digital platforms have been on guard against during this election cycle.

Many experts counsel stopping hoaxes and disinformation campaigns early, before they have gone viral.

The Post story rings all the foreign-disinformation alarms in the book.

But it's also the product of a long-established, though also heavily partisan, media outlet, and the swift action against it will rankle a lot of journalists.

Of note: While some have posited that Facebook is moderating conservative content more aggressively as prospects for a Biden win increases, one Facebook veteran told Axios that's not a factor.

According to the source, the company and Zuckerberg are concerned about the possibility of violence around the election, and that's paving the way for stronger content moderation moves.

Our thought bubble: The imminent election and the frenzy of information operations surrounding it are forcing Facebook and Twitter to make tough calls in real time and limiting their options to please everyone.

What's next: There's still nearly three weeks till Nov. 3, so expect more tough calls. And those on the left cheering should recognize that, sooner or later, Facebook or Twitter will turn down the volume on a questionable story that they have embraced.
