So how does the Dalai Lama do it?

I believe that the Illuminati have asked this same question a few hundred years ago, and they got it answered too. This is why they consider themselves immortal. They are always murdered by their family at a time and place of their choosing so that the signs are all correct, the planets in the right positions. And they believe that they reincarnate within the same bloodline. This may be part of the reason for their incest practices, their habit of fostering out their kids and changing surnames to hid family relationships.

In any case, if it really is true that a person can not only reincarnate, but choose who will be the mother, then perhaps they really are immortal in the sense of having continuous memories from one life to another.
