I had an argument with spouse that rather surprised me. It was about the right/duty of the military and what exactly it means to protect commerce. He seemed to think that the military had the right to force a sovereign country to engage in commerce with our businesses. I contended that sovereign countries have the right to determine what happens inside their borders. Who's right?

But this goes to issues like whether we had the right to invade Syria. It isn't a simple difference between two people. It goes to the heart of how people justify foreign wars. And considering the company he keeps, it's important to get it right.

If he doesn't understand the term, it could be because people who should know better don't understand the term, either. And yet they're among the very ones who can act on information like that. I'm not going to spell it out in that regard. But let's just say that there may be people who should know that term and don't. And do they need an education campaign to spell it out?
