New York Dem Received Teaching Fees From Authoritarian Regime

A New York Democrat took nearly $2,000 in teaching fees from the dictatorial government in Kazakhstan, according to the candidate's financial disclosure report.

Dana Balter, a candidate for Congress in New York, taught an online class to Kazakhstanis during the fall and winter of 2019, for which she received a total of $1,900 from the country's government.

Kazakhstan consistently ranks among the least free countries in the world, according to the Freedom House global freedom index. Citing extreme corruption, limited freedom of speech, and neither free nor fair elections, Freedom House ranks the Central Asian country in the bottom quarter of global rankings.

When independent political groups recently highlighted her compensation from the authoritarian regime, Balter said any attempts to tie her to Kazakhstan's government were "appalling."

"To suggest that I would ever support or profit from human-rights abuses is appalling," Balter told Syracuse.com. "It's just one more strategy to fill people's mail and television with lies to distract from the truth about the issues we're facing."

Tom Haag, the campaign manager for incumbent congressman John Katko (R., N.Y.), challenged Balter's defense.

"Dana Balter has repeatedly submitted false and conflicting financial disclosures to federal regulators, and consulted for a brutal authoritarian regime," Haag said. "Why in the world would a self-described progressive take foreign money from a regime with a horrific human-rights record?"

The New York Democrat also previously organized for a grassroots organization that protested the death of Qassem Soleimani, a designated terrorist and Iranian general who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, the Washington Free Beacon reported earlier this month.

A former professor and community organizer, Balter cited her massive student debt as a motivation for running for Congress and has taken a salary from her congressional campaign. "This is not some kind of special privilege," Balter said in reference to her campaign salary. "This is about being paid for a job that you're doing."

Balter lost her 2018 race against Katko by 5 points, and the pair will face off again in November. The Cook Political Report currently rates the race as a "toss up."

More Californians Own Guns than Ever Before

Study: First-time owners make up 40 percent of pandemic gun buyers

According to a new study, Californians have bought guns at a record pace, many for the first time, despite recent gun-store shutdowns.

The study, which a group of researchers at the University of California released in October, found that pandemic-caused uncertainty has led to increased demand for firearms in the deep blue state.

First-time owners accounted for 47,000 of the 110,000 people who bought a gun during the onset of the pandemic, the study concluded.

The study also identified several motivations, including initial gun-store lockdowns, for those buyers.

"The most common reason given for firearm acquisition in response to the pandemic was worry about lawlessness…, followed by worry about prisoner releases…, the government going too far…, government collapse…, and gun stores closing," the study's authors wrote. "Reasons for ammunition purchases in response to the pandemic were similar."

The study provides further evidence that new gun owners have driven the past seven months' record-breaking surge in gun sales, both in California and nationwide.

It also shows that despite long waits and gun-store shutdowns at the beginning of the pandemic, tens of thousands of Californians persisted to become first-time gun owners.

Those new owners may significantly impact the politics surrounding the regulation of gun ownership in America—including in deep blue states such as California.

The researchers' findings mirror those of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), a gun-industry trade group. NSSF surveyed gun dealers in May and concluded that 40 percent of buyers between March and May were first-timers motivated primarily by a desire for personal defense.

The University of California researchers pulled data from the the state's Safety and Wellbeing Survey, which included 2,870 Californians over 18 years old and ran from July 14 to 27. The researchers weighed the results of the survey against state demographics.

The new study is a preprint that the medRxiv archive offered before publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

‘Mask mandates don’t work’: White House COVID adviser criticizes ‘obsession’ with masks

"The evidence on universal masking is really pretty weak."

White House COVID-19 adviser Dr. Scott Atlas is criticizing what he said was an ongoing "obsession" with masks, claiming that universal masking mandates "don't work" at suppressing the spread of SARS-Cov-2.

Atlas made the remarks during an appearance on Fox News's "The Ingraham Angle" following President Trump's Miami town hall event. During that broadcast, host Savannah Guthrie challenged the president several times over his stance on masking.

On host Laura Ingraham's show, Atlas criticized what he called a "lame, bizarre obsession at this point that everyone must have universal masking."

"It's sort of a lame, bizarre obsession at this point to claim that everyone must have universal masking…mask mandates don't work"Obsession is exactly the right word. pic.twitter.com/8DqhRwl3rs— Hans Mahncke (@HansMahncke) October 16, 2020

He cited multiple U.S. counties, states, and worldwide countries in which broad mask mandates have been instituted –from Hawaii to the United Kingdom – that have nevertheless had major increases in COVID-19 cases.

The U.K., for instance, has required masks on public transportation and in shops since mid-summer, yet their average daily case rate is currently more than triple from its peak in the spring.

"The president has a rational, common-sense mask policy," Atlas said. "If you cannot socially distance, you wear a mask, particularly when you're high risk."

"And I think Americans are getting a little bit sick of this obsession with masks," he added.

Trump has resisted demands to impose a nationwide mask mandate since the start of the pandemic. A majority of U.S. states, meanwhile, have instituted some form of mask mandate over the past several months.

Macron calls killing of ‘beheaded’ French teacher an ‘Islamist terrorist attack’

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the teacher murdered in a Parisian suburb on Friday was “assassinated because he taught his students freedom of expression.” The killing is being investigated by anti-terrorism police.

"One of our fellow citizens was assassinated because he taught his students freedom of expression," Macron said after he arrived to the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, where the attack took place. "Our compatriot was the victim of a characteristic Islamist terrorist attack."

The middle school teacher was attacked earlier on Friday in the street of the commune, some 28 kilometers northwest of Paris. The attacker allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great," as he assaulted the teacher with a knife. Media reports said the teacher was either “decapitated” or stabbed in the throat, succumbing to his injuries.

The attack on the teacher was an attack on the French Republic and its Enlightenment values, Macron said, arguing that the country was in an “existential” battle to defend the possibility of making children into free citizens “no matter where they come from, what they do or don’t believe, whatever their religion.”

Seattle police officers LEAVING department at ‘unprecedented’ rate amid budget calls and ongoing protests

At least 118 officers have left the Seattle Police Department (SPD) following mass Black Lives Matter protests and city budget cuts. It currently has around 1,200 officers on its force – the lowest number in a decade.

According to statistics from the mayor’s office, the month of September typically sees five to seven officers depart from the department, but this year a whopping 39 officers left, including three who were still in training. Other departures included officers who sought lateral moves to other departments or retired altogether.

Making those numbers even more dire is the fact they don’t include another 14 officers who were using up permitted sick leave and vacation time ahead of a permanent exit. Most of those who have left have more than 25 years’ experience on the job.

“Your 911 call for help will go unanswered for a significant amount of time,” Seattle Police Officer Guild President Mike Solan told the Jason Rantz Show on radio station KTTH, when speaking about the effect of those losses on the department – and the public.

Response times to 911 calls have, in fact, already been slowing as a result of officer numbers dwindling. Response times to priority-one calls – the most serious – are around nine minutes. That’s about two minutes longer than the time taken to respond to those same calls last year.

“We are losing an unprecedented number of officers, which makes it even more critical that we recruit and retain officers committed to reform and community policing that reflects the diversity and values of our city,” Mayor Jenny Durkan said about the attrition rates.

Twitter rolls out ‘DISPUTED’ warnings for users trying to post ‘misleading’ content after backlash over Biden emails censorship

Twitter is cracking down on the spread of “misleading” content ahead of the US election, as users attempting to retweet anything similar to the NYPost’s Hunter Biden leaks will now get a warning the material is “disputed.”

Attempting to retweet offending content will trigger a prompt warning the user that the material they’re trying to post is “disputed,” Twitter revealed on Friday, posting an image of the new warning screen.

The user will be able to click a button to “find out more” about why Twitter doesn’t want the material shared, and then presumably post it anyway.

Our work to limit the spread of misleading information goes beyond elections. Starting today, before you Retweet or Quote Tweet any labeled Tweet that breaks our misleading information rules, you'll see a prompt. It'll provide more context on why the Tweet breaks our rules. pic.twitter.com/KjQSnDk8cC

— Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) October 16, 2020

The new feature arrives in the aftermath of a major controversy arising from Twitter’s censorship of a series of stories critical of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, published by the New York Post based on emails supposedly extracted from his son Hunter’s laptop.

Conservative politicians, lawmakers and press have slammed Twitter for prohibiting users from even linking to the story, and some users who shared details of the stories found themselves locked out of their account for reasons that ranged from sharing “hacked material” to posting “personal information” without permission.

The social media giant’s guidelines for what is considered “misleading” are themselves somewhat nebulous, having grown since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic to encompass not just “disinformation” but also “disputed” content, a vague descriptor that could apply to most of what users post on the platform.
