Angel Particle Which Is Both Matter And Antimatter At The Same Time Discovered, Could Lead To 100 Million Times Faster Computers

October 17, 2020 Science

A group of researchers has discovered proof for an odd particle that, strangely, is additionally its own antiparticle. it had been first proposed 80 years ago but now the existence of it would be a reality. The results, published within the journal Science, were led by researchers from a university in California and therefore the University of California.

The notion of a particle having its own antiparticle was first introduced in 1937 when Italian physicist Ettore Majorana (who strangely disappeared in 1938) first suggested the idea.

He said that inside the category of fermions, which comprise protons, electrons, and neutrons, some particles must have their own antiparticles, which became called Majorana particles.

An antiparticle could be a particle that has an identical mass because of the normal particle, but a reverse electric or magnetic property. for example, the electron’s antiparticle is the position. If the 2 bumps into one another, they annihilate one another.

In this study, the group of physicists stacked thin films of two quantum materials together and directed an electrical current through them in an exceedingly chilled chamber. the highest film was a superconductor, and therefore the bottom one was a magnetic topological insulator.

By sweeping a magnet over the stack, the team was then ready to adjust the speed of electrons. At certain points, this triggered what gave the impression to be Majorana quasiparticles to seem in pairs alongside with electrons. One was always bounced away so the flow of the individual quasiparticles may be measured.

The particular reasonably Majorana quasiparticle they think they’ve found is named a “chiral” fermion, which moves along a one-dimensional path in one direction.
