One day in June 2019, Jadeja went outside to smoke a cigarette. For two years he'd been in the virtual cult of QAnon. But now he'd watched a YouTube video that picked apart the last element of the theory he believed in. Standing there smoking, he would say later, he felt "shattered." He had gone down the QAnon rabbit hole; now, having emerged from it, he had no idea what to do next.
The most basic QAnon belief casts President Trump as the hero in a fight against the "deep state" and a sinister cabal of Democratic politicians and celebrities who abuse children. And it features an anonymous government insider called "Q" who purportedly shares secret information about that fight via cryptic online posts.
Travis View is a conspiracy theory researcher who co-hosts the podcast "QAnon Anonymous."
The theory's believers "always fantasize that they are saving children and they're bringing criminals to justice," View says. "But QAnon only hurts people. It has helped nobody."

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Catholic missions are struggling amid dwindling vocations and the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data released by the Vatican ahead of the World Mission Day this Sunday (Oct. 18).
The number of priests and ordained leaders has dropped significantly, especially in Europe and America, according to the report issued on Friday by the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, charged with distributing clergy and coordinating missions around the world.
The total number of priests in the world decreased to 414,065 in 2018, with Europe registering a drop of 2,675 priests compared to 2017. The report also reveals a slight decrease in the number of Catholic faithful in America, Europe and Oceania. Meanwhile, Africa and Asia continue to show signs of growth, according to the data.
“We mustn’t be afraid! Mission goes on thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit,” said Archbishop Protase Rugambwa, the secretary of the evangelizing congregation, during a press conference at the Vatican on Friday.
However, the diminishing number of clergy coincides with an increase in the global population, putting pressure on priests who must minister to larger numbers of people. As of December 2018, the report shows, there are 1,328,993,000 Catholics in the world.
As a result, there are an average of 14,638 faithful per priest. This shortage of priests combined with a growing population have put a strain on evangelizing and missionary efforts globally.
The number of women leaders has also experienced a decline of 7,249 sisters, a drop similar to the one reported in 2017. Once again, the data shows, Europe and America have experienced the most significant decrease in women religious.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced deep concern about Turkey’s reopening part of a beachfront resort of Varosha, which was abandoned since Turkey invaded the island in 1974, calling it provocative and seeking its reversal, the State Department said on Friday.
Pompeo made the comments in a call with Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, the Department said, referring to Turkish Cypriot authorities partial reopening of the beach town of Varosha, a former resort area fenced off and abandoned in no-man’s land since the 1974 invasion divided the island.
“The Secretary expressed deep concern and noted such a move was provocative and inconsistent with UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 and not conducive to a return to settlement talks,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is calling on Haiti's government to hold legislative elections "as soon as technically feasible."
"Haiti's legislative elections are now overdue. We continue to call for elections as soon as technically feasible. We understand that the OAS secretary-general has called for those elections to be held by the end of January," Pompeo said in a video clip posted on Twitter.

(CNN)For a guy who brags about having a great memory, President Donald Trump sure has trouble remembering the folks who really like him, which, given his well-documented desire to be loved by supporters, is also quite strange. Almost as strange as QAnon.
At his televised town hall on Thursday, Trump replied to a question about the conspiracy theory phenomenon by saying, "I know nothing about QAnon." He said this even though he has distributed QAnon-based claims with his own social media accounts, and his rallies have long been gathering spots for vocal and highly visible displays of QAnon symbols and ideas.
After Trump made multiple claims to ignorance "I know nothing about it" moderator Savannah Guthrie reminded him that Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska had declared "QAnon is nuts and real leaders call conspiracy theories, conspiracy theories." Trump responded: "Can I be honest? He may be right. I just don't know about QAnon."

On September 11, George Bush had been president less than eight months. The new president, the vice president, the new administration were faced with the worst crisis in our history virtually at the beginning of their administration.
President Bush's response in keeping us unified, in turning around the ship of state from being solely on defense against terrorism to being on offense as well and for his holding us together for that and then his determined effort to defeat global terrorism, no matter what happens in this election, President George W. Bush already has earned a place in history as a great American president.

The rise of the internet and particularly social media has unfortunately lent a lot of credibility to a wide range of conspiracy theories that are out there. Some of these are rather sinister because of the fact that they use fake and disproven science to make something false appear to be true as is the case with the anti-vaxxer movement. Another example of this would be QAnon, although in this case the conspiracy theory is rather fantastical in nature yet in spite of the fact that this is the case many people seem to be believing in it.
This has created a huge problem for companies such as YouTube that are trying to make it so that the level of quality concerning the content available on their platform would be top notch in every single way, shape or form and would not contribute anything harmful to the world in general. YouTube has been taking steps to prevent the spread of misinformation, and now that Facebook has cracked down on QAnon after the group started taking responsibility for real world terrorism and violence it turns out that YouTube is following suit although the nature of this particular platform means that YouTube might not be able to take quite a strict approach.
The video streaming platform has already reduced views on such videos by about 70% through its various methods, and now the crackdown will proceed further to remove any videos that mention this sort of thing. YouTube won’t be putting a blanket ban on all mentions of the content, though, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that many news organizations will be mentioning it to keep users updated on the dangers it poses and removing this content would be counterproductive.
