The Red Queen is a fictional character from Lewis Carrollโ€™s Through the Looking Glass. In the book, the Red Queen explains to Alice that her world works differently: โ€œNow, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!โ€

 

The Red Queen hypothesis was coined in evolutionary biology to explain that a species must adapt and evolve not just for reproductive advantage, but also for survival because competing organisms also are evolving.
