The pope is simply God's leader of the Church on earth. There have been good popes and bad ones. Corruption can habben but the powers of hell will not prevail against the Church.

Jesus prayed that we would be "one" just as He and the Father are one. How is that accomplished in protestantism when there are over 30,000 different forms?

No. the Catholic Church was started by Jesus and placed Peter in the first position of leadership. Constantine came much later (300 years later) and converted to Christianity and made the universal or "Catholic" church the official church of Rome.
