Maybe he was sick of being abused and treated like shit his whole life from his asshole father and this was the best way to take him down.
It does two things - Gets even with his dad, but also gives his "self" some tiny bit of relief for doing something actually good for the country. He knows he will go down too, but at least he did right in the end.
