old neonatalfag - not sure how this is done today, but in the 70s, a simple heelprick, drop of blood on a reagent card, read as negative or positive, chart result and reagent card went into the trash. No DNA saving, no database capability for scouring through handwritten charts.I suspect this was still being done until recently

There is now a mandate for electronic heath records (EHR), within the last 10 yrs, but it was very slow to roll out.
