Jesus called them what we would say as Pharisees or Talmudists. "Jews" was invented in 1769. The word actually first appeared in the screenplay for a broadway play. It later found its way into bible and then after that, the common dictionary.
Before that, there was a clear definition pertaining to aristocratic Jews (Ie: Pharisees) that suddenly got mixed in with the rest of the bunch.
The problem is so many everyday Jews identify with the term, when they really should be distancing themselves from it. It in no way has anything to do with their heritage. The word is a smoke screen.
