I don't think it was any sort of selfless patriotic move. Dude just finally snapped. Drug problems, pops a total dick, family thinks he's a scumbag, bc he is, all the blackmail, having zero control over his own life, he just said fuck it. Like suicide, but instead of death he gets prison, and gets to enjoy the public humiliation of pop, his last big fuck you.
