Read Ezekiel. It describes the subset of Jews who turned away from their God to worship the Canaanite gods. Most eventually repented after various calamities. But one woudl assume that a tiny, tiny subset remained corrupt. And it's the unbroken continuation of these, I suspect, that are causing the problems today.
