The UK’s coronavirus lockdown has impacted every area of healthcare, including cancer treatment, paediatrics, and cardiovascular care, resulting in excess deaths and delays to treatment, according to analysis.
Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures had already revealed on Monday that there were 25,000 excess deaths at private homes since the beginning of the year — with only nine per cent being as a result of coronavirus. Another piece of analysis predicted excess deaths would rise directly as a result of the government’s “Protect the NHS” message which deterred people from making medical appointments.
But it was the audit of several dozens of reports by health professionals, charities, and medical journals by the Daily Mail that revealed in full the staggering effect that the lockdown has had on non-COVID-19 patients.
The report noted a Lancet paper stating that during the three months of lockdown, organ transplants fell by two-thirds, resulting in the numbers of people dying on transplant waiting lists to nearly double.
Hospital chemotherapy attendance fell by 66 per cent in April, per a University College London study for the British Medical Journal analysed by the newspaper. Urgent referrals for early cancer diagnosis dropped by up to 89 per cent, according to the same study. Delays to treatments are unlikely to be caught up to for years, the Daily Mail says, revealing that delays could cause a 20 per cent rise on deaths of new cancer patients in England alone.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health said that hospitals postponed some 50,000 surgeries for children from March to May in England alone.
Rates of depression and anxiety also doubled, according to analysis from the ONS. While the British Medical Journal of Psychiatry found that nearly one-in-five people had suicidal thoughts in the first month of lockdown.
University of Buckingham cancer specialist Professor Karol Sikora called the newspaper’s analysis a “stunning demonstration of lockdowns’ harmful effects across society”.
“If lockdown were a drug, you’d need to consider the side effects, and yet we’re not – even though we seem to be diving headlong into another one.
“People sometimes claim it’s a question of health versus the economy, but it’s not – it’s health versus health,” Prof Sikora told the Daily Mail.
London GP Dr Renee Hoenderkamp wrote for the Daily Mail that in “bitter irony”, the government’s “heavy-handed” approach to coronavirus “supposedly designed to save lives appears to have achieved the exact opposite”.

Flashback: Obama Campaign Denied Biden Backed Bill Because Of Payments To Hunter
When Barack Obama was first running for president back in 2008, his campaign defended his running mate Joe Biden for supporting a senatorial bill despite the fact that his son Hunter was working for a bank that supported the legislation.
Obama Campaign’s Past Comments
Aides working on Obama’s campaign confirmed to The New York Times that Hunter’s consulting work for MBNA, which earned him $100,000 a year, was something they looked into when vetting his father as a potential running mate.
The bill that Biden was supporting made it harder for individual consumers to declare bankruptcy, which benefitted the credit card industry that included banks like MBNA, according to Fox News. Not only was the bank paying Hunter from 2001-2005, which is the year the bill was passed by the Senate, but bank employees had also donated to lawmakers from both parties.
Biden himself had received more than $214,000 in campaign contributions from MBNA employees by 2008.
Obama Campaign Defends Biden
Despite this, Obama’s aides defended Biden, claiming that he was not influenced by either the campaign donations or his son’s work.Obama campaign spokesman David Wade even claimed at the time that Biden worked hard for a bipartisan bill and sought changes to it that MBNA did not like.
“He took plenty of knocks from the largest employer in his state because he demanded changes in the bankruptcy bill,” Wade alleged. “But legislating requires compromise. Senators cast tough votes. Congress worked on the bankruptcy bill for nearly a decade, over five Congresses, to forge a bipartisan compromise.”
Most of the Democrats in the Senate opposed the bill, with Obama being one of them.

With his campaign battered in the polls, President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at a traveling reporter who questioned his campaing's constant focus on Hunter Biden – calling the scribe a 'criminal' for failing to cover it.
'You're a criminal for reporting it. You are a criminal for not reporting it,' the president said, unloading on a reporter who asked the president in Phoenix about his apparent campaign strategy to label Biden a 'criminal.'
'He is a criminal. He's a criminal. He got caught – read his laptop,' Trump said, in reference to Hunter Biden's laptop.
It was a reference to information on Hunter Biden's laptop, which Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani provided to the New York Post, which reported on 'smoking gun' information on Hunter's business transactions in Ukraine that potentially connected the son to the father.
'And you know who is a criminal here? You're a criminal for not reporting it,' Trump scolded reporter Jeff Mason of Reuters, who asked the president about his campaign calling Biden a criminal.
'You are a criminal [for not] reporting it. Let me tell you something, Joe Biden is a criminal and he's been a criminal for a long time, and you're a criminal and the media for not reporting it. Good luck, everybody. Have a good time,' Trump concluded shortly before holding a campaign rally in Arizona, where he trails Biden in the GOP-leaning state.
The president unleashed the attack shortly after he went after a New York Times report that catalogued 'sobering political assessments' of Republican political operatives that he might lose the election. He called his own rallies 'boffo' going and tore into the lead author of the piece.

Amid a campaign swing out West, Trump directed a pair of emails at reporter Maggie Haberman, the lead reporter on an article that stated the best the president's lieutenants can do is 'to keep the president occupied, happy and off Twitter as much as possible' amid the increasingly dire scenario he faces.

Senate panel delays vote to subpoena Twitter, Facebook CEOs as some Republicans waver
The subpoenas would require the tech moguls to testify on the alleged "suppression and/or censorship" of the New York Post reporting.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday postponed plans to vote on subpoenas to compel the CEOs of Twitter and Facebook to testify on allegations of anti-conservative bias after some panel Republicans expressed reservation about the maneuver.
President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have scorched the two social media companies in recent days over their handling of disputed New York Post reports alleging ties between Joe Biden and his son’s business interests.
Gameplan in flux: GOP Judiciary leaders had announced plans to hold a markup Tuesday on whether to subpoena Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to testify on allegations the company's decisions on user posts stifle conservative viewpoints, which Twitter denies. Chair Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) later said the planned vote would also target Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The panel announced Monday it will now consider whether to authorize the subpoenas at a high-profile executive session Thursday where it is separately expected to approve Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The committee said in a statement it will continue to negotiate with the companies "to allow for voluntary testimony" by the CEOs, but that if an agreement is not reached the panel will move ahead with a vote on the subpoenas "at a date to be determined."
The ask: The subpoenas would require the tech moguls to testify on the alleged "suppression and/or censorship" of the New York Post reporting and on "any other content moderation policies, practices, or actions that may interfere with or influence elections for federal office," according to a document released by the committee Monday.
Not everyone sold: Judiciary staff has indicated internally that plans for the vote were delayed in part due to some GOP panel members wavering on whether to support the action, according to one Senate GOP aide, who spoke anonymously to discuss private negotiations. Republican officials have also expressed trepidation about how quickly the committee has moved to vote on the subpoenas, the aide said. A committee spokesperson did not immediately offer comment on the matter.
But they’re not off the hook yet: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who chairs Judiciary’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, told reporters he’s expecting the committee to hear testimony from both Dorsey and Zuckerberg “shortly” whether they come willingly or not.
“One way or another, either voluntarily or pursuant to subpoena, they will testify and they will testify before the election,” Cruz said.
Zuckerberg and Dorsey are separately slated to testify alongside Google CEO Sundar Pichai next Wednesday for a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the internet industry’s prized liability protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Cruz, who sits on both Judiciary and Commerce, said he believes each panel should hold their own hearing with the tech CEOs ahead of Nov. 3. “I believe we need a separate hearing in Judiciary because the issues being discussed in the two committees are different,” Cruz said.

China “Pwns” Us: How the Chinese Are Buying Up America
The People’s Republic of China isn’t exactly a favorite of the American public. Since the Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak of early 2020, Americans are questioning whether or not all of that cheap plastic junk from Wal-Mart doesn’t come with a hidden cost.
It’s not just about the virus: There is also the spectre of deindustrialization, which has been a social disaster for the United States, particularly the rust belt. What’s more, Tucker Carlson and others reported during the early days of the Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak that the United States was dependent on China for basic medical supplies, such as penicillin.
Carlson’s comments are incredibly important, especially when we begin drilling down further into just how reliant the United States is on China: 97 percent of all antibiotics and 80 percent of all active ingredients in American pharmaceuticals come from China. In 2017 alone, the United States imported a whopping $4.6 billion in foodstuffs from the People’s Republic of China.
The corporate press has largely been silent on this matter, which isn’t surprising: They have a long history of sympathy for the People’s Republic of China and virtually all enemies of America and liberty. But there is also a deep presence by the People’s Republic of China in the United States, both in our media and in our economy, specifically in the real estate market.
If it sounds insane to you that United States laws allow a hostile foreign power to own both media and land in this country, well, you’re not alone. And while it might sound like we’re making a mountain out of a molehill, if you read the following article you will probably be amazed at just how deep the rabbithole of Chinese influence in the American media and economy goes.

Bloomberg’s media arm has been a willing servant of the Chinese Communist Party. In 2014, they squashed a story about the wealth of the Chinese elites. They leveraged a non-disclosure agreement to silence both a reporter based in Beijing and his wife, neither of whom ever worked for Bloomberg.
Lest one think that this is simply an example of companies seeking to do good business in a large and emerging market, it is worth noting that conservative media outlets are far less likely to be invested in China and when they are, they tend to be significantly less invested than their mainstream, liberal counterparts.
News Corp, for example, the parent company of Fox News, has effectively abandoned trying to penetrate China in any significant way.
Finally, there is the question of communication infrastructure in the United States. In February 2020, Attorney General William Barr warned Americans that we were losing the war to roll out 5G networks both domestically and abroad.
The economic concern here is not insignificant: There’s tons of money in 5G infrastructure and it’s much better that this go in the pockets of Americans than to the People’s Republic of China.
However, especially in the wake of the Huawei security scandal, it is worth asking whether or not any American data is safe in a world where the Chinese control the dominant mobile telecommunications infrastructure.
There’s no “smoking gun” per se, but there is a heck of a lot of smoke when it comes to Chinese influence in the American media ecosystem. One step beyond this is the literal ownership of Chinese propaganda media in the United States.

China Radio International is effectively the Chinese equivalent of Radio Free Europe. It broadcasts PRC propaganda all around the world, including in the United States.
They own ten radio stations in the United States, which might not sound like a lot until you consider that they’re in most of the major American media markets including Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Las Vegas and two in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
It can also be accessed basically anywhere in the world via Internet or shortwave.

WATCH: Police Standby as Hundreds of BLM Protesters Gather in London, While Cracking Down on Anti-Lockdown Demos
Police in London were seen standing by and watching as hundreds of Black Lives Matter protesters gathered in apparent violation of the city’s China virus restrictions, despite forcibly cracking down on other protests over the weekend.
On Sunday, hundreds of BLM activists took to the streets of London to denounce police brutality and to stand in ‘solidarity’ with the #EndSars movement in Nigeria.
In a Breitbart London exclusive video, police were filmed standing by as the crowds gathered in the British capital. Police presence was also very light in comparison to what was witnessed at an anti-lockdown march held the day before, on Saturday.
The BLM protesters amassed by Marble Arch in Hyde Park in the early afternoon, before marching through Oxford Circus to the Nigerian High Commission, Scotland Yard, and finally congregating Parliament Square.
Outside Scotland Yard — the home of the city’s police force — an activist told the crowd that the police are “racist” and that they don’t care about the lives of black people.
“Anywhere we go, can’t lie, we are going to face police brutality. And we have to remember, we speak about the U.S., right? But we need to speak about this country and the brutalities they put upon us,” she said.
“The UK is not innocent at all guys, not innocent at all,” she concluded.
Later in the protest, another activist was filmed in a Breitbart London video calling for black people to continue mass gatherings and urging them to protest and speak for their “skin colour”.
He went on to claim that black people “built the West”, arguing that the only reason British cities like Bristol are flourishing is because of colonialism.
In contrast to the lax policing of the BLM rally on Sunday, riot police in London were seen using their batons against anti-lockdown protesters on Saturday.
Following the introduction of Tier 2 lockdown restrictions — which prohibit Londoners from mixing with people from other households indoors, in addition to the already in place ban on gatherings of more than six people and a city-wide 10 pm curfew on bars and restaurants — anti-lockdown protesters took to the streets in rebellion against the limits on their liberties.
Police confronted the StandUpX ‘March for Freedom’ protesters, knocking a man to the ground as they shouted “stay the f*** back” according to The Mirror.
On Friday evening, police were also seen arresting anti-lockdown protesters and revellers for gathering in the late-night London hotspot Soho.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist, the police force’s lead coronavirus officer criticised the “dangerous and reckless breaches of the regulations”.
“We will not hesitate to take action against those individuals or businesses who put people at risk,” Twist said.
The disparity in policing seen at anti-lockdown protests compared to BLM marches in the city has been longstanding, with Metropolitan Police commissioner, Cressida Dick, admitting that the police took a hands-off approach to BLM protests out of fear of sparking “serious disorder”.

NATO Envoys Openly Rooting For Trump Defeat, Vow Early Summit If Biden Wins
The coronavirus pandemic has complicated recent plans for gatherings of NATO leaders, but the military alliance is apparently waiting to see the outcome of the Nov.3rd US election before it decides on its next summit.
Envoys have now indicated that NATO will seek an early summit should Democratic nominee Joe Biden become the next US president, Reuters reports Tuesday.
The report cites NATO diplomats and officials to say a summit would be held in Brussels as early as March should Biden enter the White House, in order to "welcome" the new leader following four years of Trump being a thorn in the side of Brussels.
Recall that not only has Trump throughout his presidency demanded European allies do more in terms of shouldering their fair share of the burden of defense spending for which they are "delinquent", but has repeatedly called the Cold War era alliance "obsolete" and at some points even hinted the US could withdraw.
Reuters explains that "While the U.S.-led alliance agreed last year to hold a summit in 2021, a meeting in the spring would be an early chance to repair transatlantic ties if Biden were to be voted into the White House on Nov. 3, after a bruising four years under Trump."
Also hanging over the Trump White House is years of unfounded 'Russiagate' allegations which at their height claimed Trump was sort of Putin 'asset' - all which after the long awaited and clearly overhyped Mueller report report came to nothing.
Perhaps most interesting and telling is that Reuters cites a diplomat who openly airs that many NATO officials are outright rooting for a Biden victory.
“Most allies want a Biden victory next month, but they would obviously work with a reelected Trump administration,” a diplomat at NATO’s Brussels headquarters told Reuters.

University Of Chicago Faculty Demands Reparations
A letter published by a coalition of University of Chicago faculty demands a $2 million budget, Critical Race Theory Department, defunding of police, and reparations committee.
The call to action requires an “equity analysis” to mold the University’s future agenda and address an alleged history of fostering white supremacy and institutional racism.
The Demands follow the University of Chicago’s removal of a Stephen Douglas plaque from its campus.
University of Chicago Faculty associated with the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture (CSRPC) accused the University of Chicago of reinforcing systemic and institutional racism. The letter titled “More than Diversity – A Call to Action from University of Chicago Faculty” initiated a diversity strike to cease faculty collaboration on diversity initiatives and discourage academics from participating in University of Chicago hosted events.
The statement demands an increased budget for the CSRPC, the defunding of the University of Chicago Police Department, and the establishment of a Critical Race Studies Department and a committee on reparations.
“Department through which scholars working centrally on race may be hired and students systematically trained."
In a letter titled “More than Diversity – A Call to Action from University of Chicago Faculty,” the authors cite the failure to hire a Faculty Director for the CSRPC, a $50,000 budget cut, the University’s alliance with campus police, and the University’s connection to Stephen Douglas, as instigating factors that spurred the creation of the letter. The faculty seek to hold the University of Chicago accountable for its “long history of willingly enabling and directly contributing to structural racism.”

Demands included a $2 million budget for the CSRPC as well as complete “autonomy” in all decision making. This sum would “secure the staff and operating budget; sponsor community and activists fellows’ programs; provide financial support for the pursuing of the Mellon projects; provide resources to build a race core for undergraduates; support students faculty and staff in research, mentorship and teaching endeavors.”
The coalition requires that the University of Chicago establish a Department of Critical Race Studies. Fulfillment of this request would provide a “Department through which scholars working centrally on race may be hired and students systematically trained." They note the absence of this department as “egregious,” noting that the University of Chicago “stands alone” and that previous University of Chicago Provosts have “actively discouraged the formation of such a Department.”
Faculty also demand “the incorporation of ‘equity’ as an explicitly stated objective” of the University of Chicago. The drafters say this “will require that each body committed to diversity at the university employ an equity analysis that shapes their agenda and informs their goals.”
The document calls for the defunding of the University of Chicago Police Department. The letter says, “for students of color and black residents on the South Side, the expansive jurisdiction and policing powers of the UCPD do not enhance their safety.” The coalition has allied with the #CareNotCops campaign and UChicago United to advocate for “the safety and livelihoods of students, staff, faculty, and community members.”
On Oct. 1, UChicago United, a “Coalition of UChicago's POC students + orgs,” displayed a banner that read “UChicago, Kill the Cop in Your Head, #ETHNICSTUDIESNOW.”

Goldman To Pay $2.8BN In Long-Awaited 1MDB Settlement Deal; Asian Unit To Plead Guilty
Update (1330ET): WSJ is now reporting that Goldman will pay a total of $2.2 billion plus an additional $600 million (some of which has already been paid to foreign regulators) as part of a deferred prosecution agreement with the DoJ. As part of the deal, one of the bank's Asian units will plead guilty to charges in the US.
The US-based parent company meanwhile will be bound by a DPA that could allow prosecutors to target the bank with criminal penalties if the agreement is violated.
On the bright side (for Goldman), the deal won't require the bank to hire an independent monitor, an extremely costly process (as WSJ pointed out, the bank is still making quarterly updates to the monitor it was forced to hire in the wake of claims it deliberately sold customers worthless mortgage bonds during the run-up to the crisis).
The settlement will be announced later this week.

Goldman Sachs is reportedly on the cusp of settling one of the biggest criminal cases involving a Wall Street bank since the financial crisis: According to a Bloomberg News report published late Monday evening, the Vampire Squid has reached a tentative agreement with the DoJ to pay more than $2 billion in penalties - a figure that BBG noted is "broadly in line with analysts expectations" - and - here's the key bit - allows the bank to avoid all criminal penalties.
That last bit is especially important, because, as we've chronicled over the past few years, many of the bank's top executives appeared to have been personally involved with the deal, which was initially brought in by Tim Leissner, formerly the bank's top man in Southeast Asia, before he was suspended over the deal, before agreeing to cooperate with the Feds against his former employer (where he reportedly told authorities about the endemic "culture of corruption" at play within the bank).

The former commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the US is entering the 'biggest wave' of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr Scott Gottlieb, who ran the agency from May 2017 to April 2019, said the increasing numbers of cases and hospitalizations present a huge challenge to the country without a vaccine.
'We're going to have to endure this wave of spread right now,' he said on CBS's Face the Nation on Sunday.
'And it's probably likely to be the biggest wave that we endure without the benefit of a vaccinated population.'
Gottlieb told host Margaret Brennan that 42 states are seeing a rise in the number of hospitalizations and 45 states are experiencing growing epidemics.
According to the COVID Tracking Project, a little more than 37,000 coronavirus patients were hospitalized as of Wednesday.
While that number is well below the peak of about 60,000 in April, it is the highest figure seen since August.
This month, at least six states - Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming - reported record hospitalizations.
'There's really no backstop against the spread that we're seeing,' Gottlieb said.
The former commissioner said it is alarming to see the uptick despite several states keeping mitigation measures in place such as mask mandates and social distancing.
'If we weren't taking those steps, if people weren't wearing masks generally and some states weren't adhering to some mitigation tactics and we weren't testing and tracing, then we'd have much worse spread,' he said.
The rise comes as the US prepares to vote in the November 3 presidential election - just two weeks away.
More that 18 million Americans have casted their ballots already, but many are preparing to vote in person.
Gottlieb says it is safe to go to polling places as long as people wear high-quality face coverings such as a surgical mask or an N95 mask.
President Donald Trump, who is campaigning for reelection, has been holding large rallies with thousands in attendance - and most not wearing masks.
Gottlieb said this is 'problematic' and criticized the White House's response to the pandemic.
'They've come out against universal masking. They've come out against testing asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic people,' Gottlieb said of the Trump administration.
'They say testing should be reserved just to the vulnerable. They want businesses and schools reopened, as we all do, and they're against targeted mitigation like closing restaurants.
'There was criticism of New York when New York kept the restaurants closed. So it begs the question, what is the strategy? And I think the strategy is just to endure the spread until we get to that vaccine.'
Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, has said that a vaccine will likely not be available to the general public until spring 2021.

Facebook on Monday suspended the account of a Ukrainian lawmaker who had made claims about a second laptop linked to Hunter Biden.
Andrii Derkach posted to Facebook on Friday to say there is a 'second laptop' involving evidence of corruption and connected to the Bidens, The Daily Beast reported.
After suspending his account Facebook told the site in a statement: 'We removed this account and this Page for violating our policy against the use of our platform by people engaged in election-focused influence operations.'
Last week, the New York Post published emails and photographs that the outlet claimed were contained on a laptop owned by Hunter Biden. The messages suggested that Hunter had arranged for a top executive at Ukrainian energy company Burisma to meet his father.
Biden's campaign and a lawyer for Hunter Biden said they had no record of such a meeting taking place. They have not addressed the authenticity of the emails.
Derkach is one of Rudy Giuliani's principal contacts and was mentioned in an August intelligence assessment that described a concerted Russian effort to disparage Biden. A Treasury Department sanction announcement from last month characterized Derkach as an 'active Russian agent for over a decade.'
He was sanctioned by the Treasury Department in September for being 'directly or indirectly engaged in, sponsored, concealed, or otherwise been complicit in foreign interference in an attempt to undermine the upcoming 2020 U.S. presidential election'.
Derkach had claimed in a Facebook post to know of a second laptop, used by 'two representatives for the interests of [Burisma founder Mykola] Zlochevsky.' Hunter served on the board of directors at Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
In the post Derkach says that laptop 'was given to Ukrainian law enforcement' and that Burisma representatives were now serving as 'witnesses in criminal proceedings.'
The Ukrainian parliamentarian said: 'The facts that confirm international corruption are stored on the second laptop. This laptop was handed over to Ukrainian law enforcement officers, and the "workers" themselves are now witnesses in criminal proceedings.'
