I don't subscribe to the "cry for help" theory.
Think of the Samson account in the Bible. Samson pulled down the temple on himself and all the pagans gathered there. It was not a cry for help. He was a prisoner, his eyes had been put out. He wasn't squealing for help. It was a final act of retribution for his imprisonment and the blindness that had been inflicted on him by his enemies - largely due to his own fault. It was the ultimate "get even" move.
