Conspiracy theory QAnon is everywhere, including in podcasts

SOCIAL MEDIA

Wednesday, 21 Oct 2020 3:30 PM MYT

A wave of bans. While social media companies are updating their policies to prohibit content promoting QAnon, adherents of this far-right conspiracy theory are turning to new platforms to promote their controversial ideology.

Among them are several podcast-hosting websites, according to a report by nonprofit Media Matters for America. The liberal media watchdog group found that Qanon-related podcasts and videos continue to spread on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Vimeo, with many supporters of the conspiracy theory uploading content recently banned from YouTube and Facebook to these platforms.

According to Business Insider, Spotify has since taken down the QAnon podcasts “X22 Report”, “Indigenous Mike”, “Praying Medic”, and “Pardon My American” from its platform. A decision in line with the Swedish company’s policy on Hate Content and Hateful Conduct, which stipulates that it prohibits “content whose principal purpose is to incite hatred or violence against people because of their race, religion, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation”.

While Spotify was quick to take action to ban the QAnon podcasts identified by Media Matters for America, tech companies are still struggling to stop the spread of the pro-Trump conspiracy theory on their platforms.

The Chinese-owned app TikTok has recently revamped its disinformation policy to remove content and accounts affiliated to QAnon, which have grown in popularity in recent years. Fourteen QAnon-related hashtags racked up over 488 million views combined on TikTok as of June this year, according to Media Matters for America.

Although TikTok quickly removed 11 of these identified hashtags and variations from its app, the company has recently confirmed that it was taking “significant steps” to make QAnon content harder to find.

“We continually update our safeguards with misspellings and new phrases as we work to keep TikTok a safe and authentic place for our community,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement to Media Matters for America.

Smaller platforms such as Pinterest, Etsy and Triller similarly announced restrictions on QAnon-related content, at a time when Democrats are increasingly criticising social media platforms for doing too little to curb the spread of right-wing misinformation.

Although the QAnon movement began in 2017 on 4chan, the conspiracy theory movement has migrated to the offline world in recent years, with some of its adherents charged with violent crimes.

Earlier this October, the US House of Representatives approved a bipartisan resolution to condemn this conspiracy theory, which falsely alleges that Satan-worshipping paedophiles have infiltrated the highest reaches of American government and Hollywood.

“QAnon poses a clear and immediate danger to our country: eroding trust in democratic institutions, rejecting the very notion of objective reality, fueling division and even directly leading to violence,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commented in a statement. – AFP Relaxnews

South China Sea: Japan's Prime Miniter Yoshihide Suga

opposes actions that escalate tensions

WION Web Team Tokyo, Japan Oct 21, 2020, 12.53 PM(IST)

Japan on Wednesday opposed any actions that escalate tension in the East and South China Seas.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga took a thinly veiled dig at China’s activities in the disputed South China Sea, where it has built and militarised manmade islands and is pressing its claim to virtually all of the sea’s key fisheries and waterways.

A number of Southeast Asian nations dispute China’s claims to the waters.

“In the Indo-Pacific that connects maritime transport between Japan and ASEAN, we can achieve the peace and prosperity only by fully implementing rule of law that allows anyone freedom and openness,” Suga told a news conference in Jakarta. ASEAN is the 11-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

“But in the South China Sea, opposite actions are being taken and we are closely watching with grave concern,” Suga said. “Japan opposes to any action that would increase tensions in the South China Sea.”

Suga reiterated that all parties involved in the South China Sea disputes must make peaceful efforts toward resolution, not by force or threat.

Suga pledged to strengthen bilateral defense ties with Southeast Asian nations and promised further assistance to step up their maritime policing, including training and equipment transfer from the Japanese Coast Guard.

The trip follows this month's meeting in Tokyo of the “Quad”, an informal grouping of India, Australia, Japan and the United States that Washington sees as a bulwark against China’s growing regional influence.

China has denounced the grouping of the four democracies as a "mini-NATO" aimed at containing its development.

"Our response in the South China Sea is not aimed at any one country," Suga said, when asked if Japan wanted to create an Asian version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Suga must balance Japan’s deep economic ties with China against security concerns, including Beijing’s growing push to assert claims over disputed East China Sea isles.

Some in his ruling party want to see a harder line, after ties warmed under his predecessor, Shinzo Abe.

"Japan is determined to defend its territory, territorial waters and air space," Suga said, adding that Japan also opposed actions that raised tension in the East China Sea.

Several members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have territorial disputes with China in the vital South China Sea, but are wary of alienating the group's major economic partner and getting entangled in an intense confrontation between Washington and Beijing.

But some welcome Japan's greater engagement in the region.

Suga agreed with President Joko Widodo on Tuesday to speed talks on the export of Japanese defence gear and technology to Indonesia and have their defence and foreign ministers meet soon.

A day earlier, the Japanese leader and Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc also agreed in principle on a military equipment and technology export pact.

5 takeaways from the government’s lawsuit against Google

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

OCTOBER 21, 2020 12:31 AM

WASHINGTON

The Justice Department's lawsuit against Google alleging antitrust violations marks the government’s most significant attempt to protect competition since its groundbreaking case against Microsoft more than 20 years ago. The lawsuit claims Google has abused its dominance in online search and advertising to stifle competition and harm consumers.

Here are five things to know about the lawsuit and what might be coming down the line.

GOVERNMENT BRANDS GOOGLE A MONOPOLY

After years of hemming and hawing over the matter, the U.S. government has now formally described Google as an illegal monopolist.

Just being a monopolist isn't illegal. And that's been good for Google, since it dominates roughly 90% of the market for internet searches. But abuse of monopoly can easily land a company in trouble.

The Justice Department went there, calling Google a “monopoly gatekeeper for the internet” that has used “anticompetitive tactics” to maintain and extend monopolies in both search and search ads. The lawsuit alleges that Google stifled competition and innovation from smaller upstarts and harmed consumers by reducing the quality and variety of search options — and that the company also uses its monopoly money to lock in its favorable position on smartphones and in browsers.

GOOGLE: FREE! FREE IS GOOD! YOU LIKE FREE!

Unsurprisingly, Google sees this differently. The company argues that its services are useful and beneficial to consumers, that they face ample competition and that they've unleashed innovations that help people manage their lives.

What's more, those services are free for consumers to use, at least in monetary terms. What Google doesn't often remind its users is that it's handsomely reimbursed by all the search ads it runs on behalf of outside advertisers, which it targets using the personal information its users hand over, often unknowingly, while taking advantage of its “free” services.

Google also emphasizes that its services hold down the cost of smartphones and that its lucrative exclusive deals to make Google Search the default on many phones — what the government calls its “exclusionary agreements” — don't stop users from changing to rival search engines if they want to.

Alleged Vatican payments linked to George Pell case referred

to Victorian corruption watchdog

Australian federal police was asked to investigate and has ‘referred aspects of this matter’ to Ibac

Paul Karp

Wed 21 Oct 2020 10.17 BST

The Australian federal police has referred information regarding alleged payments from the Vatican linked to George Pell’s court matters to Victoria’s anti-corruption body.

Australia’s financial crimes regulator, Austrac, revealed on Tuesday it had provided information to police after it was asked to examine allegations that €700,000 (A$1.1m) had been paid from Vatican funds to a witness in the Pell case.

The Australian federal police confirmed on Wednesday it had received information from Austrac which it was reviewing and had “concurrently referred aspects of the matter” to Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (Ibac).

Italian newspapers have claimed that Cardinal Giovanni Becciu, a rival of Pell, was suspected of paying an Australian witness in the child sexual abuse case.

Becciu has denied making any such payments and the lawyer who represented the man who accused Pell of sexually assaulting him in the 1990s, Vivian Waller, has similarly denied any connection to the claims.

“My client denies any knowledge or receipt of any payments,” Waller said in early October.

At a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday, the Liberal senator, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, revealed she had written to Austrac about the alleged payments.

Nicole Role, the chief executive of Austrac, replied: “Yes I can confirm Austrac has looked into the matter and we’ve provided information to the AFP and to Victoria police.”

An AFP spokeswoman told Guardian Australia on Wednesday it could “confirm it received information from Austrac on this matter”.

“This is part of a routine exchange of financial intelligence between Austrac and the AFP,” she said. “The AFP is undertaking a review of the relevant information. The AFP has concurrently referred aspects of this matter to the Victorian Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.”

A spokesperson for Ibac on Wednesday evening said: “For legal and operational reasons we are unable to comment on this matter.”

Pell’s barrister, Robert Richter QC, earlier this month said it was incumbent on Australian and international authorities to investigate the allegations.

“They are concerning allegations and require thorough investigation of the money trail, wherever that may be,” Richter told Guardian Australia.

Becciu and Pell had been at odds over the Australian’s efforts to overhaul the management of Vatican finances.

La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera newspapers reported that Pell’s reformist agenda threatened to expose alleged corruption committed by Becciu when he distributed millions of dollars in donations between 2011 and 2018.

“I categorically deny interfering in any way in the trial of Cardinal Pell,” Becciu has said.

The Italian cardinal resigned last month amid the corruption scandal, saying he had been asked to step aside.

Pell was charged with multiple sexual offences in June 2017. A Melbourne jury convicted Pell of five charges in December 2018 after an earlier jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Victoria’s court of appeal upheld the convictions last year before Australia’s high court overturned the convictions in April.

GM, Sam.

Check out what I am working on as my little effort to quell the baker wars that I feel were certainly needed to expose the Bias, yet that should end now as we approach the precipice.

The Wisdom of Solomon is upon Qresearch

A woman awoke to find her child missing.

Another woman stole her child in the night and would not relent

The case was brought before the wise King Solomon.

Solomon decreed that the child would be split into two pieces

and that each women would get half.

The thief would still not relent yet the child's real mother

begged Solomon not to divide the child and to give the child to the thief.

By this, Solomon knew who the real mother was.

Q research has no or few real Mother's as neither side will relent.

Only those whose goals it was to divide are still dividing.

Let evil do evil still and good do good still.

It hurts yet it needed to be exposed and like a bad cyst, lanced.

So, whatya think?
