I work on the assumption the world is fundamentally evil - everything here is designed to pit you into a desperate and vicious competition. But strategically it makes my job easier:

Being evil is fundamentally stupid. Q is right when he says 'they're so stupid' - because their evil is predictable: slander, discredit, threaten, harass, murder, lawsuit, frame-up, etc etc. Being evil for evil's sake is a dumb approach because it always thinks egocentrically.

Evil trips up on it's shoelaces when it encounters good. 'Who doesn't want money?' - people with morals. Which is why people get 'bumped off', because it means they couldn't be bought out, intimidated or silenced.

I bet you, not counting the shills, everyone (here) does their research for free, in their spare time, because it's the truth or the right thing to do.

If what I've seen in work (high level) is any indication of corrupt government politicians, they truly are stupid.

Consider this: The NYT can't even do basic research and it's journalists are paid. Your work - for free - is higher quality.
