That's a gross under-count. The percentage of households is more likely over 50% and probably should include an average of 6+ firearms per household. That's only one pistol and one long arm per adult and one long arm per responsible (and trained!) teenager, so that is also likely an under-count.

I've been taking the neighbor's daughter to the range lately. She seems to have had some sort of unpleasantness with her former boyfriend and, since she's of age to do so, now wishes to own a pistol. I haven't pried. I've advised her on the law, the four rules and what a proper site picture looks like. She's hitting the plates pretty regularly, we can work on speed and stretch the distance once she has her own firearm.
