It's interesting how often our concept of how old time is differs in the simple methods used to inform us of it.
The 1800s in America has become such a mythic period, that the brain tells you it's quite ancient. Movies often propelled that feeling by telling about real events in epic and mythic ways - the Western movie genre, for example.
But then you see something like an old man on a mid 1950's TV panel show talking about the time he saw President Lincoln being shot in the Ford theatre, and remembering distinctly Boothe jumping onto the stage….. then you get a bit of a shock. This age of myths was just yesterday.
In my youth, I interreacted with quite a number of people who would have been born just 40 years after Lincoln's death.

When the pizza thing hit first, I was like most people quite shocked and feeling gut sick. Never in my life in the weeks and months after was I offered more pizza. Virtually everywhere I went, "Will we just get pizza?" Uncanny, and it wasn't just in my mind. Pizzas was never a big part of my diet but that period, couldn't escape them.
