(Bloomberg) – Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who disclosed top-secret U.S. spying programs, has obtained permanent residency in Russia, his lawyer said.

Snowden, 37, received notification Thursday his application to remain in the country indefinitely and unconditionally has been approved, his lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said by phone.

Russian President Vladimir Putin granted asylum to the American whistle-blower in 2013, sparking a major diplomatic confrontation with the then administration of President Barack Obama. The following year, he was awarded temporary residency.

Snowden, who is living in or near Moscow, has defended his decision to reveal highly classified NSA surveillance programs, including the hacking of private Internet systems and widespread spying on allies and adversaries of the U.S.

President Donald Trump in August ignited speculation about a possible pardon for Snowden, saying in an interview with the New York Post that he was looking into letting him return to the U.S. without going to prison. Trump said many people believed that the intelligence leaker had not been treated fairly. Attorney General William Barr later said he would be “vehemently opposed” to any attempt to pardon Snowden.

EXCLUSIVE: A list of “key domestic contacts” for a joint venture involving Jim and Hunter Biden and now-bankrupt CEFC China Energy Co. included former Vice President Joe Biden's current running mate Sen. Kamala Harris, among other prominent Democrats, Fox News has learned.

An email exclusively obtained by Fox News, with the subject line “Phase one domestic contacts/ projects” and dated May 15, 2017, Biden’s brother, Jim Biden, shared a list of “key domestic contacts for phase one target projects.”

The email is unrelated to the laptop or hard drive purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden, the former vice president's son.

The list, included Harris, D-Calif.; Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio; former Virginia Gov. Terry McCauliffe, among others.

It is unclear if any of the Democrats were ever contacted about the “target projects.”

Unemployment claims hit their lowest number since the beginning of the pandemic

The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of weekly U.S. jobless claims dropped last week to 787,000 – the lowest weekly number since the start of the pandemic in mid March.

The weekly number also was 100,000 less than economists expected.

The figure is also less than last week's, in the mid-800,000's.

“He challenges the Director of National Intelligence to release sensitive signal intelligence or human intelligence or satellite reconnaissance that we have, knowing that won’t happen,” he added.

“There are real efforts on behalf of our adversaries — I’ve said this from the start wether it’s Russia or China, Iran or others — to sow discord among Americans,” he continued. “Chairman Schiff’s comments is just the sort of discord that they were hoping to stir.”
