Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Chair of GAVI) and Yoo Myung-hee (Minister of Trade of South Korea) are the current front-runners for the Director General position of the World Trade Organization

 

The United States and Europe are heading for a dispute over which of the candidates to support for the top position in World Trade Organization (WTO), as the selection of the first woman to head the global trade organization enters a pivotal phase.

 

According to a report from Bloomberg, the EU is inclined to support Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and may sign off on that position Wednesday, whereas the Trump administration is leaning towards South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee. However, China’s preference and those of other major economies like Brazil and India remain unclear.

 

The new DG, WTO is expected to be announced in November to replace Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, who stepped down from the job at the end of August – a year before his term ended. He was the sixth consecutive man to lead the 25-year-old organization.

Ngozi was former Finance Minister of Nigeria. She is now in the running for Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Ngozi classified as a HLP (High Level Person) in the Clinton emails in prior diggs.

Mother of Ngozi: Professor Kamene Okonjo

 

Father, now deceased, was a King of Ogwashi Uku in Delta State, Nigeria. Ngozi announced her father's death and the successor (her brother), without approval of the Royal Family. A lawyer indicated that Ngozi's father was a mere regent and should never have been the king of Ogwashi-Uku. Therefore his son, Chude Okonjo could not step into the throne.

 

He was one of the first trustees of radical nationalist Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Other founding trustees included Hassan Sunmonu and Professor Eskor Toyo. Professor Toyo was a Marxist scholar and a pioneering founder of the defunct Nigerian-Leninist party, Socialist Workers and Farmers Party of Nigeria. An article states "...we do not take ASUU seriously anymore. [T]hey have lost the essence of the struggle and that much of ASUU's problems are self-inflicted." Another article indicates that as at Oct 22, 2020, ASUU has been on strike since Mar 23, 2020. This means that higher education students have been without education since Mar 23, 2020.
