77-year-old Joe Biden said, “I’m not going to shut down the economy, I’m not gonna shut down the country” — despite vowing to ‘listen to the scientists’ and shut down the country to ‘combat the Coronavirus’ during his interview with ABC News.

The plan Biden laid out today is literally what President Trump is already doing to combat the Coronavirus (save for universal masking).

Today Biden said his administration would do the following to stop the spread of Covid:

– Enough PPE

– Scientific guidelines for opening

– Safe and effective treatments and vaccine

As usual, Biden immediately fled from the podium after he finished his speech and refused to take questions from reporters.

COVID-19 Lockdown Reduced Mental Health, Sleep, and Exercise

A first-of-its-kind global survey shows the initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown dramatically altered our personal habits, largely for the worse.

“The stay-at-home orders did result in one major health positive. Overall, healthy eating increased because we ate out less frequently. However, we snacked more. We got less exercise. We went to bed later and slept more poorly. Our anxiety levels doubled,” said Leanne Redman, PhD, Associate Executive Director for Scientific Education at Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

The global survey evaluated the inadvertent changes in health behaviors that took place under the pandemic’s widespread restrictions. Researchers found that the lockdown’s effects were magnified among people with obesity.

“Overall, people with obesity improved their diets the most. But they also experienced the sharpest declines in mental health and the highest incidence of weight gain,” Dr. Redman said. “One-third of people with obesity gained weight during the lockdown, compared to 20.5 percent of people with normal weight or overweight.”

The online survey study ran during the month of April. More than 12,000 people worldwide took a look at the survey and 7,754 completed the detailed online questionnaire. The majority of the respondents were in the United States, with half from Louisiana. Residents of Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and more than 50 other countries also responded.

Those who took the survey reacted to the pandemic in largely the same way whether they live in Louisiana, elsewhere in the United States or abroad.

“This study is the first to survey thousands of people across the globe on lifestyle behavior changes in response to stay-at-home orders. Groundbreaking research like this is part and parcel of Pennington Biomedical’s mission. The study demonstrates that chronic diseases like obesity affect our health beyond the physical,” said Executive Director John Kirwan, PhD. “Dr. Redman’s study is just one of many initiatives the center launched to help understand COVID-19’s impact and to slow its spread.”

The research team would like physicians and scientists to modify the way they manage patients with obesity in two ways, said Emily Flanagan, PhD, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Redman’s Reproductive Endocrinology and Women’s Health Laboratory.

By increasing the number of mental health screenings during and after the pandemic.

By remaining connected to patients/study participants through remote visits and telehealth to prevent irreversible health effects from the pandemic. So-called virtual visits can assuage patients’ concerns about the safety of in-person visits.

Three-quarters of likely voters believe they'll recover from COVID if they get it

Fewer than one-quarter believe they would die from it.

Seventy-five percent of likely U.S. voters think they would recover from COVID-19 if they caught the virus, according to a new Just the News Daily Poll with Scott Rasmussen.

Just 22% of the likely voters expressed doubt about surviving the virus and 7% were unsure.

The optimistic responses come amid several months of declining concerns that the virus is significantly more fatal than seasonal influenza. Current CDC calcluations estimate people younger than 49 years old – a solid majority of the U.S. population – the virus is less fatal than seasonal flu.

Rasmussen noted the "stunning partisan divide" of the responses.

"Fifty-nine percent of Republicans are Very Confident they could recover," he said. "Just 25% of Democrats agree. This perception is consistent with every other data point on the pandemic. Democrats are more worried and want to be more cautious. Republicans are saying it's not the end of the world."

The survey of 1,265 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen using a mixed mode approach from Oct. 15-17, 2020.

Marine Commandant to Leaders: Quit The 'Soft Relief' of Fired Officers

The top Marine officer has had enough of so-called "soft reliefs."

In a letter sent earlier this month to a wide swath of the Marine officer corps, commandant Gen. David Berger reminded everyone from general to lieutenant that they needed to hold Marines accountable with a paper trail.

"Any Marine relieved for cause or reassigned based on loss of confidence in ability to perform assigned tasks shall receive an adverse fitness report," Berger wrote in an Oct. 9 white letter obtained by Task & Purpose.

"The practice of 'soft relief' for wrongdoing or poor performance is not authorized," he added.

Maj. Eric Flanagan, a spokesman for the commandant, declined to answer questions on the memo, though he said Berger has been focused on this "important matter" following the release of his planning guidance in 2019.

"When we fail to hold the standard, we establish new lower standards," Berger wrote in the planning guidance. "Elite organizations do not accept mediocrity and they do not look the other way when teammates come up short of expectations. We must hold each other accountable."

Fitness reports, the primary means of evaluating Marines, are a crucial metric considered in everything from promotions and awards to future training opportunities, said Steven Weintraub, a retired Marine colonel.

"It's unfortunate that the commandant has to remind officers in the Marine Corps of this," Weintraub told Task & Purpose. “If you have a Marine that was relieved of command, that has to be put in."

When a Marine officer is relieved of command over "loss of trust and confidence,” it's often seen as a career-ender, according to Weintraub, though some officers continue their career until they can retire with full pensions.

"They were most likely never selected for command" again, Weintraub said.

A number of Marine officers have been relieved of command in recent months, though it remains unclear whether any avoided an adverse fitness report as the commandant directed.

Maj. Gen. Stephen Neary, the two-star general in charge of Marines in Europe and Africa, was fired on Tuesday amid an investigation into his alleged use of a racial slur.

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign has spent more money on television and digital advertising than any other presidential candidate in American history, with more than a week left to go before Election Day.

Biden’s campaign has spent more than $582 million on television advertising since launching his campaign last year, according to data from the nonpartisan firm Advertising Analytics. In just the last week, Biden’s team spent $45 million on air.

The figure surpasses former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent heavily during the Democratic presidential primary in a bid to capture Super Tuesday votes.

And it easily surpasses President Trump, whose campaign has spent $342 million in the last two years, according to the firm.

Biden’s campaign has another $57 million in television time reserved over the final 10-day sprint to November. Pro-Biden groups will spend tens of millions more, while Trump’s campaign and pro-Trump outside groups have more than $50 million in advertising booked.

The two sides dropped $160 million on television and digital ads in just the past seven days. Trump spent slightly more than Biden on Facebook and Google advertising, the data shows — $14 million versus about $12.7 million.

Biden, Trump and their allies have run more than 100,000 advertisements per week since the beginning of October, according to counts maintained by the Wesleyan Media Project. The two sides have aired the most ads in the Phoenix, Charlotte, N.C., and Des Moines, Iowa, media markets, in the heart of three swing states that Trump won in 2016.

The record-breaking spending comes as observers expect the 2020 campaign to near $11 billion in total expenditures. The Center for Responsive Politics found federal candidates for president, the Senate and the House had spent $7.2 billion through the end of September, en route to a projected total of $10.8 billion — about 50 percent higher than was spent in 2016.

Trump admin sanctions five Iranian entities for connections to 2020 election interference

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday that the Trump administration had sanctioned five Iranian entities: IRGC, the IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), Bayan Rasaneh Gostar Institute, Iranian Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU), and International Union of Virtual Media (IUVM).

The statement followed the joint warning earlier this week from FBI Director Chris Wray and Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe that Iran is interfering in the upcoming U.S. election by sending intimidating emails to registered Democrat voters.

Thursday’s sanctions were issued against Iranian entities that attempted to do just what the intelligence community warned about.

The administration also added “several cyber actors to our terrorist watch list and databases for their known association with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist, which will effectively prevent those individuals and their families from traveling to the United States.,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Friday.

=San Francisco Tech CEO Emails 10 Million Customers Urging Them To Vote For Biden

Offering yet another reminder of just how far-removed the hysterical hyper-liberalism of San Francisco and the Bay Area is from the normal American political baseline, the CEO of Expensify, one of the world's largest providers of expense account software, recently emailed all 10 million users of the firms' software pleading with them to vote for Vice President Joe Biden.

According to Bloomberg, the idea elicited "strong debate" within the company, which is based in San Francisco, with some employees disagreeing with the gesture. But CEO David Barrett, the driving force behind the message, said he decided to press ahead and hit 'send'.

"We needed to stand true for what we believe in and hope that most people agree with us," Barrett said in an interview. "It’s not like we did this with a lot of enthusiasm. We did this out of a perceived necessity."

At one point in the email, Barrett wrote that "anything less than a vote for Biden is a vote against democracy," and that if President Trump were reelected, Barrett wrote, it would "damage our democracy to such an extent, I’m obligated on behalf of shareholders to take any action I can to avoid it."

Barrett tried to justify the email by telling Bloomberg that a Trump victory could stoke civil unrest, which would in turn be "bad for business," because "not many expense reports get filed during a civil war."

Political activism in the workplace has become a major issue in Silicon Valley, particularly since the CEO of Coinbase offered employees a buyout if they disagreed with a new companywide rule discouraging any kind of heated political debate or activity within the office. Barrett said he was inspired to speak up by Armstrong's "cowardly" decision.

I read The Fourth Turning in 2006, after seeing it described in John Mauldin and Doug Casey’s newsletters as an uncannily accurate assessment of American history based upon generational configurations which recur on eighty-year cycles, a long human life. Strauss and Howe wrote the book in 1997 and used their generational theory to predict the Crisis that would begin in the mid-2000’s and come to an indeterminate climax in the mid-2020’s.
